The paper exposes the theoretical and experimental principles of an analytical procedure for the determination of one compound in the presence of another with an overlapping absorption spectrum, without the need to use any standard solutions of the latter. The proposed method was applied to the determination of binary mixtures of known composition in order to assess its accuracy and precision.
A fuzzy ranking strategy for portfolio selection applied to the Spanish stock market

In this paper we present a fuzzy ranking procedure for the portfolio selection problem. The uncertainty on the returns of each portfolio is approximated by means of a trapezoidal fuzzy number. The expected return and risk of the portfolio are then characteristics of that fuzzy number. A rank index that accounts for both expected return and risk is defined, allowing the decision-maker to compare different portfolios. The paper ends with an application of that fuzzy ranking strategy to the Spanish stock market.

In this chapter we analyze the numerical performance of some possibilistic models for selecting portfolios in the framework of risk-return trade-off. Portfolio optimization deals with the problem of how to allocate wealth among several assets, taking into account the uncertainty involved in the behavior of the financial markets. Abstract A fuzzy controller for a neutralization process is described. The controller was set up for a laboratory pilot plant. The approach is shown to be effective and can be extended to highly nonlinear and nonstationary processes. The “operator” knowledge encoded in the rules was obtained by several experimental runs of the system using manual control. Rules are composed using the max-min compositional rule of inference. OBJECTIVE We have compared the performance of two faecal immunochemical tests (FIT) in an average-risk population. MATERIALS AND METHODS Altogether, 10 000 individuals aged 50-74 were selected randomly from the population of Latvia in 2011 and assigned randomly either to OC-Sensor or to FOB Gold single-time testing. Positivity of the test, frequency of colonic lesions, number needed to screen (NNscreen) and scope for the detection of an advanced neoplasm (cancer and advanced adenoma) were compared between the tests using the same cutoff concentrations in µg/g faeces. Multifocal choroiditis: Indocyanine green angiographic features

The aim of this study is to retrospectively evaluate the indocyanine green (ICG) angiographic features in 13 patients affected by multifocal choroiditis. We identified two clinical and angiographic patterns. The ‘active’ pattern showed hypofluorescence up to the late phases and more extensive choroidal involvement than presumed by ophthalmoscopy and fluorescein angiography. In the ‘inactive’ pattern, ICG angiography showed hypofluorescence during all the phases: no increase in lesion number was observed between early and late phases. In previous eye movement research on word length effects, spatial width has been confounded with the number of letters. McDonald (2006) unconfounded these factors by rendering all words in sentences in constant spatial width. In the present study, the Arial font with proportional letter spacing was used for varying the number of letters while equating for spatial width, while the Courier font with monospaced letter spacing was used to measure the contribution of spatial width to the observed word length effect. A Community in Life and Death: The Late Neolithic Megalithic Tomb at Alto de Reinoso (Burgos, Spain)

The analysis of the human remains from the megalithic tomb at Alto de Reinoso represents the widest integrative study of a Neolithic collective burial in Spain. Combining archaeology, osteology, molecular genetics and stable isotope analysis (87Sr/86Sr, δ15N, δ13C) it provides a wealth of information on the minimum number of individuals, age, sex, body height, pathologies, mitochondrial DNA profiles, kinship relations, mobility, and diet. The grave was in use for approximately one hundred years around 3700 cal BC, thus dating from the Late Neolithic of the Iberian chronology.
