Numerical simulation of fatigue-driven delamination using interface elements

This paper presents a computational technique for the prediction of fatigue-driven delamination growth in composite materials. The interface element, which has been extensively applied to predict delamination growth due to static loading, has been modified to incorporate the effects of cyclic loading. Using a damage mechanics formulation, the constitutive law for the interface element has been extended by incorporating a modified version of a continuum fatigue damage model. Taxonomic study of sucrose-positive Aeromonas jandaei-like isolates from faeces, water and eels: emendation of A. jandaei Carnahan et al. 1992

Fourteen sucrose-positive Aeromonas jandaei-like isolates from fresh water and reared European eels were subjected to a polyphasic study to determine their taxonomic position. Numerical taxonomy was used to analyse phenotypic data obtained for these isolates and 43 type and reference strains representative of recognized Aeromonas species. The A. jandaei cluster (phenon 1) was defined at 81.6 % similarity (S(J)); this included the A. jandaei-like isolates, the sucrose-positive strain Aeromonas veronii biogroup sobria CECT 4910 and nearly all A. jandaei reference strains used in the study. Interaction between turbulent structures and particles in roughened channel

Abstract The distribution of inertial particles in turbulent flows is highly non-uniform and is driven by the local dynamics of the turbulent structures of the underlying carrier flow field. In the specific context of dilute particle-laden wall-bounded flows, deposition and resuspension mechanisms are dominated by the interaction between inertial particles and coherent turbulent structures characteristic of the wall region. Digital holographic microscopy with pure-optical spherical phase compensation

Telecentric architecture is proposed for circumventing, by the pure-optical method, the residual parabolic phase distortion inherent to standard configuration of digital holographic microscopy. This optical circumvention produces several important advantages. One is that there is no need for computer compensation of the parabolic phase during the phase map recovering procedure. The other is that in off-axis configuration, the spatial frequency useful domain is enlarged. The validity of the method is demonstrated by performing quantitative measurement of depth differences with high axial resolution. (C) 2011 Optical Society of America

DACRON© 360 WOVEN: EXPERIMENTAL CHARACTERIZATION AND COMPUTATIONAL ASPECTS

In this paper a first experimental study on Dacron© 360 woven constitutive behavior is presented. This woven is widely adopted in sail manufacturing, it is obtained by weaving polyethylene terephthalate (PET) yarn and it shows some peculiar features due to its own manufacturing process. The experimental tests, in terms of tensile tests and cyclic tests, clearly show the orthotropy features of the material, its high strength and deformability. The examination with optical microscope of the tested specimen allows to evidence the interaction between warp and weft yarns. The obtained results represent a first step for the definition of a correct computational approach to such materials.

A Boundary Element Formulation for Modelling Structural Health Monitoring Applications

In this paper, a boundary element formulation for modelling pitch-catch damage detection applications is introduced. The current formulation has been validated by both finite element analyses and physical experiments. Dark Matter Search Results from a One Ton-Year Exposure of XENON1T

We report on a search for Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) using 278.8 days of data collected with the XENON1T experiment at LNGS. XENON1T utilizes a liquid xenon time projection chamber with a fiducial mass of $(1.30 \pm 0.01)$ t, resulting in a 1.0 t$\times$yr exposure. The energy region of interest, [1.4, 10.6] $\mathrm{keV_{ee}}$ ([4.9, 40.9] $\mathrm{keV_{nr}}$), exhibits an ultra-low electron recoil background rate of $(82\substack{+5 \\ -3}\textrm{ (sys)}\pm3\textrm{ (stat)})$ events/$(\mathrm{t}\times\mathrm{yr}\times\mathrm{keV_{ee}})$.
