Medication errors and drug knowledge gaps among critical-care nurses: a mixed multi-method study

2019

Background Medication errors are a serious and complex problem in clinical practice, especially in intensive care units whose patients can suffer potentially very serious consequences because of the critical nature of their diseases and the pharmacotherapy programs implemented in these patients. The origins of these errors discussed in the literature are wide-ranging, although far-reaching variables are of particular special interest to those involved in training nurses. The main objective of this research was to study if the level of knowledge that critical-care nurses have about the use and administration of medications is related to the most common medication errors. Methods This was a m…

Transcultural adaption and preliminary evaluation of “understanding low back pain” patient education booklet

2019

Abstract Background Low back pain (LBP) is the number one cause of disability globally. LBP is a symptom associated with biological, psychological and social factors, and serious causes for pain are very rare. Unhelpful beliefs about LBP and inappropriate imaging are common. Practitioners report pressure from patients to provide inappropriate imaging. A recently developed patient education and management booklet, ‘Understanding low back pain’, was designed to target previously identified barriers for reducing inappropriate imaging. The booklet includes evidence-based information on LBP and supports communication between patients and practitioners. Our aim was to 1) describe the translation …

The effects of alcoholism and smoking on advanced cancer patients admitted to an acute supportive/palliative care unit

2016

Aim: The aim of this prospective study was to determine the characteristics and symptom burden of advanced cancer patients with alcoholism problems and smoking, who were referred to an acute palliative/supportive care unit (ASPCU) of a comprehensive cancer center. Methods: Patients’ characteristics, indications for admission, kind of admission, awareness of prognosis, and anticancer treatments were recorded. The Edmonton Symptom Assessment Scale (ESAS) was used to assess physical and psychological symptoms, and the CAGE questionnaire for the diagnosis of alcoholism. Patients were also divided in three groups: persistent smokers (PS), former smokers (FS), and non-smokers (NS). The Memorial…

Supportive care services in hemato-oncology centers: a national survey

2016

Background: In the field of hemato-oncology, there is paucity of data assessing models of integration between hemato-oncology and other partner specialties. The aim of this national survey was to gather information about the status of the integration of this kind of activity in hemato-oncologic units existing in Italy. Methods: A national telephone survey was conducted to gather information about the status of the integration of hemato-oncologic and supportive care/anesthesiological services. From the national registry of hemato-oncology units, 149 centers were contacted by phone and a dedicated doctor was identified to gather information about the center through a telephone interview. Food safety in hospital: knowledge, attitudes and practices of nursing staff of two hospitals in Sicily, Italy.

2007

Abstract Background Food hygiene in hospital poses peculiar problems, particularly given the presence of patients who could be more vulnerable than healthy subjects to microbiological and nutritional risks. Moreover, in nosocomial outbreaks of infectious intestinal disease, the mortality risk has been proved to be significantly higher than the community outbreaks and highest for foodborne outbreaks. On the other hand, the common involvement in the role of food handlers of nurses or domestic staff, not specifically trained about food hygiene and HACCP, may represent a further cause of concern. The purpose of this study was to evaluate knowledge, attitudes, and practices concerning food safet…

Teaching practice as a testbench of learning in master's degree education for nurse teachers in Finland.

1998

This article presents the approach and procedures used in a Finnish developmental study on nurse teacher education. The teaching practice period was organized by dividing student teachers into small study groups and assigning the group an entire course to be planned and carried out in teacher/student collaboration. The work process of the groups was videotaped and analysed qualitatively. Preliminary results and ideas concerning the developmental needs of nurse teacher education are presented.

Sustainability in Nursing Education

2015

This chapter, Sustainability in nursing education, Ashild Slettebo argues how sustainability can be integrated into nursing training and education. A key here is for the students to be able to develop a comprehensive perspective on nursing. The chapter uses different definitions of sustainability, linked to an account of responsibilities of nurses. It has a useful discussion of practical examples on how nursing education can have a wider impact in universities, in terms of sustainability.

Implementation of the norwegian ‘Starting right’ child health service innovation: implementation adjustments, adoption, and acceptability

2021

Abstract Background An increased and/or stable proportion of the child and adolescent population reports symptoms of impaired health, and the symptoms can be identified early. Therefore, structured child- and parent-reported outcome measures need to be implemented in child and school health services for decision support and identification of children at risk. We aimed to (a) qualitatively examine adjustments of active implementation from the pilot implementation of the Norwegian ‘Starting Right’ health service innovation including an online child health assessment tool and practical routines, and (b) measure practitioners´ adoption and parental acceptability. Methods We used a mixed-methods…

A human factors intervention in a hospital - evaluating the outcome of a TeamSTEPPS program in a surgical ward

2021

AbstractBackgroundPatient safety in hospitals is being jeopardized, since too many patients experience adverse events. Most of these adverse events arise from human factors, such as inefficient teamwork and communication failures, and the incidence of adverse events is greatest in the surgical area. Previous research has shown the effect of team training on patient safety culture and on different areas of teamwork. Limited research has investigated teamwork in surgical wards. The aim of this study was to evaluate the professional and organizational outcomes of a team training intervention among healthcare professionals in a surgical ward after 6 and 12 months. Systems Engineering Initiative…
