Problématiques de la nutrition en ophtalmologie – application à la dégénérescence maculaire liée à l’âge nutrition in ophthalmology – clinical applic…

2014

« Let food be your medicine. » This contribution from Hippocrates is still timely addressed, especially in the field of ophthalmology. Observational epidemiology reports close associations between food habits and the risk or prevention of several ocular pathologies such as cataract or Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD). Anti-oxidant vitamins, minerals and lipids are the nutrients that have been the most widely studied. Interventional epidemiology and experimental works partially corroborated these findings. Unexpectedly, the benefit of long chain omega 3 polyunsaturated fatty acids in the prevention of late AMD was not firmly established in Age-Related Eye Disease Study 2 (AREDS2). Neve…

4812 - A0028 Gangliosides in the retina: a comparative inventory with brain and other ocular structures

2016

Purpose: Gangliosides (GG) make an extremely diverse family of glycosphingolipids particularly abundant in the brain and neural tissues. While it is known that alterations in GG metabolism are associated with visual defects, the precise biological roles of these compounds in the retina are still largely unknown. In this context, we performed an exhaustive inventory and thorough characterization of the human eye GG aiming to reveal specificities and common features of the retina compared to other ocular tissues and brain. Methods: Retina, RPE/Choroid, ciliary body, optic nerve and brain samples were collected from deceased human donors (N=7). GG were extracted and analysed by a comprehensive …

Effect of dietary omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids on IOP elevation, electroretinographic changes and retinal ganglion cell loss in a laser-induced ra…

2008

International audience; Purpose:To test the efficacy of dietary omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids in a rat model of glaucoma induced by laser photocoagulation. Methods:Male Sprague Dawley rats were fed for 3 months with a diet containing either: 1) 17% of omega-3 fatty acids (10% EPA + 7% DHA), 2) 10% of omega-6 fatty acids (as GLA), or 3) a combination of both omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids (10% EPA + 7% DHA + 10% GLA), by comparison with a control group of animals fed with a standard diet deprived of EPA, DHA and GLA (n=10 in each group). After 3 months of diet, glaucoma was induced in one eye of each animal by laser photocoagulation (532nm) of the episcleral veins, the trabeculum and the l…

Serum omega-3 fatty acids are not associated with age-related macular degeneration

2012

Revue non indexée dans le JCR.; International audience; Evaluation of: Kabasawa S, Mori K, Horie-Inoue K et al. Associations of cigarette smoking but. not serum fatty acids with age-related macular degeneration in a Japanese population. Ophthalmology 118(6), 1082–1088 (2011). Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of visual impairment in the elderly. in developed countries. Risk factors for AMD are classified into endogenous nonmodifiable. factors, including genetics and environmental factors such as smoking and dietary habits. Both. epidemiological and experimental studies suggest that dietary omega-3 long-chain fatty acids. would participate to prevent from the develo…

Plasmalogens and cell-cell communication between retinal glial cells

2016

This is an abstract that was submitted for the 2016 ARVO Annual Meeting, held in Seattle, Wash., May 1-5, 2016.; Purpose: Plasmalogens (or ether-lipids) are a particular class of glycerophospholipids characterized by the presence of a vinyl-ether bond at the sn-1 position of the glycerol backbone and by the preferential esterification of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) at the sn-2 position. Plasmalogens are found at high concentrations in retinal macroglial cells such as Müller cells and astrocytes. Müller cells and astrocytes are known to communicate by the way of intracellular calcium waves and gap junctions. Connexin 43 is the major protein of these communicating junctions. The aim o…

NMR-based quantification of rosmarinic and carnosic acids, GC-MS profile and bioactivity relevant to neurodegenerative disorders of Rosmarinus offici…

2013

Abstract A comparative study of phytochemicals content and biological properties of eight Rosmarinus officinalis (rosemary) populations (RO1–RO8) collected in different areas of Tunisia was carried out. Two of the main rosemary constituents, rosmarinic and carnosic acids, were quantified by an NMR technique. Carnosic acid content was higher than that of rosmarinic acid. The non-polar constituents were examined by GC and GC–MS. Total phenols and flavonoids content were also determined in order to discuss the possible correlation between these phytochemicals and bioactivity. Antioxidant activity was investigated through different in vitro assays. Sample RO3 from a sub-humid area showed the hi…

Corporate responsibility in the food chain: The criteria and indicators

2012

Corporate responsibility (CR) is becoming a key issue in the food chain. In order to make sense of this phenomenon, a seminal aper by Maloni and Brown (2006) called for further empirical investigation on the criteria of responsibility in the food supply chain. The purpose of this paper is to answer the call by identifying the criteria for defining CR and develop indicators for measuring the responsibility performance of the food chain. The study was based on interactive and participatory stakeholder dialogues with diverse experts, corporate representatives and other stakeholders, including non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and governmental bodies. Through an iterative research process w…
