A critical approach to the toxic metal ion removal by hazelnut and almond shells

The adsorption capacity of ground hazelnut (HS) and almond (AS) shells towards Pb(II) and Cd(II) has been studied at pH = 5, in NaNO3 and NaCl ionic media, in the ionic strength range 0.05-0.5 mol L-1. Kinetic and equilibrium experiments were carried out by using the Differential Pulse Anodic Stripping Voltammetry technique to check the amount of the metal ion removed by HS and AS materials. Mechanical properties of Macadamia nutshell powder and PLA bio-composites

AbstractA study on the mechanical properties of Macadamia nutshell powder/PLA bio-composites is presented in this paper. The effects of powder weight content, powder condition and processing methods are investigated with the aid of Design of Experiments. It is shown from the results that both the stiffness and strength are dependent on the weight content of Macadamia nutshell powders. The elastic modulus increases 9.8% when the Macadamia nutshell powder content is 40%. Both flexural and tensile strengths decrease with increasing Macadamia nutshell powder content. Changes in 4-desmethylsterol, 4-monomethylsterol, 4,4-dimethylsterol and phytostanol composition were quantitatively and qualitatively investigated during the ripening of three varieties of Tunisian-grown pecan nuts (Mahan, Moore and Burkett). These components have many health benefits, especially in lowering LDL-cholesterol and preventing heart disease. Tree nuts have become popular snacks due to their attributed benefits in the health state. Nevertheless, their susceptibility to fungal contamination lead to the occurrence of potentially dangerous mycotoxins. Hence, the aim of this work was to evaluate the presence of mycotoxins in ready-to-eat almonds, walnuts, and pistachios from Italian markets. The most relevant mycotoxin found in almonds was α-zearalanol in 18% of samples (n = 17) ranging from 3.70 to 4.54 µg/kg. One-year monitoring of aflatoxins and ochratoxin A in tiger-nuts and their beverages.

A sensitive and selective liquid chromatography-triple quadrupole-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-ESI-MS-MS) method was developed for the routine analysis of aflatoxins (AFB(1), AFB(2), AFG(1) and AFG(2)) and ochratoxin A (OTA) in tiger nuts and tiger-nut beverage (horchata). Mycotoxins and mycotoxigenic moulds in nuts and sunflower seeds for human consumption

A survey was carried out to obtain data on the occurrence of mycotoxins and the mycotoxin-producing potential of fungi isolated from nuts (almonds, peanuts, hazelnuts, pistachio nuts) and sunflower seeds in Spain. Thin-layer chromatography was used to separate the toxins. Aflatoxins were detected in one sample of almonds (95 ppb aflatoxin B1 and 15 ppb aflaxtoxin B2) and in one sample of peanuts at a level below 10 ppb of aflatoxin B1. 100% of samples showed variable incidence of fungal contamination. Incidence of ochratoxin A in rice and dried fruits from Rabat and Salé area, Morocco.

One hundred samples of dried fruits (20 dried raisins, 20 walnuts, 20 peanuts, 20 dried figs and 20 pistachios) and 20 samples of rice purchased from retail shops in the Rabat and Salé area in Morocco were analysed for ochratoxin A (OTA) by immunoaffinity clean-up (IAC) and liquid chromatography (LC) with fluorescence detection. The limit of quantification (LOQ) (S/N = 10:1) of OTA was 0.02 ng g(-1) in rice, 0.03 ng g(-1) in pistachio, peanut and walnut, and 0.03 ng g(-1) in dried raisins and dried figs.
