Scratches Removal in Digitised Aerial Photos Concerning Sicilian Territory

2007

In this paper we propose a fast and effective method to detect and restore scratches in aerial photos from a photographic archive concerning Sicilian territory. Scratch removal is a typical problem for old movie films but similar defects can be seen in still images. Our solution is based on a semiautomatic detection process and an unsupervised restoration algorithm. Results are comparable with those obtained with commercial restoration tools.

Polar Bear in 'Fortitude'. Affective Aesthetics and Politics of Climate Change

2021

In the first season of the television Eco Noir crime series “Fortitude” (2015) the polar bear appears as a sticky object that embodies an ambiguous affective charge as an icon of global warming. This article discusses the ways in which the polar bear evokes viewer affect in the series through two discourses. The first one relates to violence, essentially present in crime narratives, and how the human and nonhuman animal are positioned in relation to global warming, violence and each other. It raises questions of place and belonging in a local and global context and examines how the polar bear is constructed in terms of stranger danger and victimization in relation to human animals and the t…

Effects of pre- and postnatal exposure to 5-methoxytryptamine and early handling on an object-place association learning task in adolescent rat offsp…

2007

A reduction in 5-HT1A receptor response enhances learning and memory performance in rats. Pre- and postnatal treatment with 5-methoxytryptamine (5MT), a non-selective serotonergic agonist, and early handling, reduce the number of 5-HT1A receptors in neonatal and pre-pubertal rat progeny. The aim of this study was to investigate in adolescent male rats the consequences of pre- and postnatal treatment with 5MT and its interaction with early handling on an object-place association learning task, the "Can test", a motivated, non-aversive, spatial/object discrimination task. Results show that a single daily injection of 5MT from gestational days 12 to 21 (1 mg/kg s.c.) and from postnatal days 2 …

An improvement of a bound of Green

2012

A p-group G of order pn (p prime, n ≥ 1) satisfies a classic Green's bound log p |M(G)| ≤ ½n(n - 1) on the order of the Schur multiplier M(G) of G. Ellis and Wiegold sharpened this restriction, proving that log p |M(G)| ≤ ½(d - 1)(n + m), where |G′| = pm(m ≥ 1) and d is the minimal number of generators of G. The first author has recently shown that log p |M(G)| ≤ ½(n + m - 2)(n - m - 1) + 1, improving not only Green's bound, but several other inequalities on |M(G)| in literature. Our main results deal with estimations with respect to the bound of Ellis and Wiegold.

Inductive synthesis of dot expressions

2005

We consider the problem of the synthesis of algorithms by sample computations. We introduce a formal language, namely, the so-called dot expressions, which is based on a formalization of the intuitive notion of ellipsis (‘...’). Whilst formally the dot expressions are simply a language describing sets of words, on the other hand, it can be considered as a programming language supporting quite a wide class of programs. Equivalence and asymptotical equivalence of dot expressions are defined and proved to be decidable. A formal example of a dot expression is defined in the way that, actually, it represents a sample computation of the program presented by the given dot expression. A system of s…

Introduction to General Duality Theory for Multi-Objective Optimization

1992

This is intended as a comprehensive introduction to the duality theory for vector optimization recently developed by C. Malivert and the present author [3]. It refers to arbitrarily given classes of mappings (dual elements) and extends the general duality theory proposed for scalar optimization by E. Balder, S. Kurcyusz and the present author [1] and P. Lindberg.

Construction of Fibred Categories

2019

In Section 5, we introduce methods from classical homological algebra (i.e. using mostly the language of derived categories of abelian categories and their Verdier quotients) to construct the main examples of premotivic categories of interest in this book, while, in Section 6, we study how to check that the localization axiom holds in practice. Section 7 is devoted to the process of obtaining new fibred categories from old ones, by considering homotopy theoretic modules over a ring object.

Formal Description of Rough Sets

1994

In the paper we present a formal description of rough sets within the limits of the generalized set theory, which is interpreted in the approximation of set theory. The rough sets are interpreted as an approximations, which are defined by means of the Pawlak’s rough sets.

Allergic Rhinitis and its Impact on Asthma (ARIA) Phase 4 (2018): Change management in allergic rhinitis and asthma multimorbidity using mobile techn…

2019

Allergic Rhinitis and its Impact on Asthma (ARIA) has evolved from a guideline by using the best approach to integrated care pathways using mobile technology in patients with allergic rhinitis (AR) and asthma multimorbidity. The proposed next phase of ARIA is change management, with the aim of providing an active and healthy life to patients with rhinitis and to those with asthma multimorbidity across the lifecycle irrespective of their sex or socioeconomic status to reduce health and social inequities incurred by the disease. ARIA has followed the 8-step model of Kotter to assess and implement the effect of rhinitis on asthma multimorbidity and to propose multimorbid guidelines. A second c…

MASK 2017: ARIA digitally-enabled, integrated, person-centred care for rhinitis and asthma multimorbidity using real-world-evidence

2018

mHealth, such as apps running on consumer smart devices is becoming increasingly popular and has the potential to profoundly affect healthcare and health outcomes. However, it may be disruptive and results achieved are not always reaching the goals. Allergic Rhinitis and its Impact on Asthma (ARIA) has evolved from a guideline using the best evidence-based approach to care pathways suited to real-life using mobile technology in allergic rhinitis (AR) and asthma multimorbidity. Patients largely use over-the-counter medications dispensed in pharmacies. Shared decision making centered around the patient and based on self-management should be the norm.
