Gestational surrogacy. Current view

2019

Surrogate motherhood is an assisted procreation practice by which a woman gestates an embryo with which she has no biological relationship on behalf of a contracting couple or individual, having to relinquish the child to them after its birth. This practice normally entails a financial remuneration for the pregnant woman; when this is not the case, it is called altruistic surrogacy. From a medical perspective, potential problems for the surrogate and for children born through this practice should be taken into account, especially the existence of possible disabilities in the child. The bioethical aspects are of most interest because the practice of surrogacy objectifies the expectant mother…

Multi-sensor Fusion through Adaptive Bayesian Networks

2011

Common sensory devices for measuring environmental data are typically heterogeneous, and present strict energy constraints; moreover, they are likely affected by noise, and their behavior may vary across time. Bayesian Networks constitute a suitable tool for pre-processing such data before performing more refined artificial reasoning; the approach proposed here aims at obtaining the best trade-off between performance and cost, by adapting the operating mode of the underlying sensory devices. Moreover, self-configuration of the nodes providing the evidence to the Bayesian network is carried out by means of an on-line multi-objective optimization.

Mass Accretion Processes in Young Stellar Objects: Role of Intense Flaring Activity

2014

According to the magnetospheric accretion scenario, young low-mass stars are surrounded by circumstellar disks which they interact with through accretion of mass. The accretion builds up the star to its final mass and is also believed to power the mass outflows, which may in turn have a significant role in removing the excess angular momentum from the star-disk system. Although the process of mass accretion is a critical aspect of star formation, some of its mechanisms are still to be fully understood. On the other hand, strong flaring activity is a common feature of young stellar objects (YSOs). In the Sun, such events give rise to perturbations of the interplanetary medium. Similar but mo…

Recent progress in electrical impedance tomography

2003

We consider the inverse problem of finding cavities within some body from electrostatic measurements on the boundary. By a cavity we understand any object with a different electrical conductivity from the background material of the body. We survey two algorithms for solving this inverse problem, namely the factorization method and a MUSIC-type algorithm. In particular, we present a number of numerical results to highlight the potential and the limitations of these two methods.

A future of journalism beyond the objectivity-dialogue divide? : Hybridity in the news of entrepreneurial journalists

2019

As pioneers of new ideas and practices, many entrepreneurial journalists spearhead the change of journalism towards hybridity. By applying appraisal theory, this article examines a hybrid of objectivity and dialogue in daily news articles by five entrepreneurial journalism outlets – Axios, MustRead, National Observer, The Skimm and the Voice of San Diego. For comparative purposes, a dataset from three legacy media outlets was also analysed. The results show that the entrepreneurial journalism outlets employ journalistic dialogue in otherwise stylistically objective news texts notably more often than do legacy media outlets. Dialogic registers provide subtle, non-partisan assessments of eve…

Trajetória docente na transição e na apropriação de tecnologias digitais em práticas de ensino

2018

This study focused on the appropriation of digital technologies by two teachers as an instrument of teaching and instruction in secondary school. We are interested in the teaching trajectory in the transition from traditional practices to hybrid learning contexts. We use mixed methods based on the Grounded Theory and contribution of Theory of Activity and dialogic approach. We chose qualitative research with audio-recorded interview, documental source and field observations of interactions between students in a hybrid context of learning. The main results indicated that the teacher trajectory passes through technological appropriation in: a) conventionalization of a symbolic and semiotic fi…

Semiclassical Methods for the Description of Large Metal Clusters

1996

One of the most fascinating aspects of clusters is that they can be made arbitrarily large and therefore provide links between the microscopic and the macroscopic world. It is challenging to study how their physical properties change when going from atoms and small molecules to the bulk limit of condensed matter. But also the models and mathematical tools themselves, which are used in order to tackle the many-body problem, are an object of study for the theoretician. In particular, the question of how far quantum-mechanics must be carried with increasing size and where classical pictures become appropriate is of great interest. In this spirit, we discuss here some semiclassical methods for …

L’évolution récente des expositions temporaires sur le Moyen Âge en Italie: Public, thèmes, finalités

2011

This article proposes a reflection about Italian art exhibitions on Middle Ages all over the twentieth century in order to understand the reception of medieval history in Italy. The Italian case is compared with the other European countries and their own relationships with Middle Ages. The articles studies also the important changes in the cultural offer and in the museum function during the last decade of the twentieth century and analyses their major consequences on the exhibitions. Lastly the ‘status’ of the exhibited objects and their mise-en-scene are examined.

Andalusian hauberk identifiers. A new example

2019

The article deals with a new small metal disk with an Arabic inscription incised on it. The study gives the reading and translation of its text and places the object in the Islamic medieval metalwork group it belongs to. It is the fi…
