Constrained Robust MultiObjective Optimization for Reactive Design in Distribution Systems

2006

This paper presents a new formulation including robustness of solution of constrained multiobjective design or reactive power compensation. The algorithm used for optimization is the NSGA-II (Non dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II) with a special crowded comparison operator for constraints handling. The need for including the issue of robustness of solutions derives from the simple observation that loads are uncertain in distribution systems and their estimation is often affected by errors. In design problems it is desirable to consider the loads with a certain range of variation. In this paper the NSGA-II algorithm is applied to efficiently solve the issue and the solutions attained co…

A New Meta-Heuristic Multi-Objective Approach For Optimal Dispatch of Dispersed and Renewable Generating Units in Power Distribution Systems

2011

The application of stochastic methods in engineering research and optimization has been increasing over the past few decades. Ant Colony Optimization, in particular, has been attracting growing attention as a promising approach both in discrete and continuous domains. The present work proposes a multi-objective Ant Colony Optimization for continuous domains showing good convergence properties and uniform coverage of the non-dominated front. These properties have been proved both with mathematical test functions and with a complex real world problem. Besides the second part of the chapter presents the application of the new algorithm to the problem of optimal dispatch of dispersed power gene…

Multiobjective Optimal Reconfiguration of MV Networks with Different Earthing Systems

2010

The paper deals with the traditional problem of multiobjective optimal reconfiguration applied to power distribution systems considering the safety issue in the formulation. The applications are devoted to the solution of the posed problem in networks in which coexist energy sources with unearthed neutral point and resonant earthed neutral point. After a brief review of the most recent papers on optimal reconfiguration, the paper outlines the safety problem and provides a solution to the multiobjective problem using the Non dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II aiming at: minimal power losses operation, safety check at distribution substations and load balancing among the HV/MV transformer…

Multi-objective long term optimal dispatch of distributed energy resources in micro-grids

2010

The amount of distributed generators in power distribution systems is evermore increasing, and the potential benefits and drawbacks are becoming clearer. The optimal management of Distributed Energy Resources (DER) in microgrids is essential to guarantee their best exploitation. Optimal operation allows to maximize their benefits, such as reduction of network energy losses, reduction of carbon emissions and to minimize the negative effects of a strong DER penetration, such as the increase of infrastructural investment and operational costs. Hence, DER management is a multi-objective problem in which many objectives of interest, often conflicting, need to be optimized simultaneously. In this…

Multi-objective Optimization of Energy Hubs at the Crossroad of Three Energy Distribution Networks

2016

This paper provides a multi-objective optimization framework aimed at the management of a multi-carrier energy system involving both electricity and hydrogen. Using the concept of the multi-carrier hub, the proposed system has been modelled in order to define completely every energy flow inside the plant. After that, a heuristic multi-objective optimization algorithm, the Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II, has been implemented for the energy management of the plant, taking into account simultaneously three different objective functions related to economic and technical goals. This optimization process provides the set point defining the working configuration of the plant for a dayl…

QoS-Aware Fault Detection in Wireless Sensor Networks

2013

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are a fundamental building block of many pervasive applications. Nevertheless the use of such technology raises new challenges regarding the development of reliable and fault-tolerant systems. One of the most critical issues is the detection of corrupted readings amidst the huge amount of gathered sensory data. Indeed, such readings could significantly affect the quality of service (QoS) of the WSN, and thus it is highly desirable to automatically discard them. This issue is usually addressed through “fault detection” algorithms that classify readings by exploiting temporal and spatial correlations. Generally, these algorithms do not take into account QoS re…

The egoistic approach to parallel process migration into heterogeneous workstation network

1996

Abstract A new approach to the allocation of processes in a distributed system is discussed. The proposed solution deals with process migration into heterogeneous systems by means of a strategy that delegates the individual parallel applications to manage the migration of their processes by themselves, on the basis of their own performance objectives. This approach is discussed in opposition to the global scheduling based one, and the load balancing objective is pursued as an effect of the optimization of individual applications. A new performance evaluation criterion is introduced that consists in monitoring the delays that occur when two parallel processes run towards a common synchroniza…

A Model of Goal Dynamics in Organizations: a case study

2009

The purpose of the present work is to build a suitable system dynamics model for goal dynamics in organizations, as proposed by Barlas & Yasarcan (2008). The proposed model does not bear any ambition of being exhaustive: the main objective of this paper is to propose a model of goal dynamics in which Goal Setting, Management by Objectives and Training are viewed as human resource practices able to enhance workers’ goal commitment, and therefore, improve organizational performance. In the first part of this paper, an analysis of the Goal Setting Theory and the role of goal setting practices, in bettering worker’s performance, are stressed. In the second part, a case-study, the causal loop an…

Family Business Advising, Strategic Work and Unfolding Spaces

2019

The purpose of this paper is to explore the ways in which the process of advising, as well as the family firm-professional advisor relationship, can unfold over time and perform strategic work. To achieve this aim, we rely upon the experience of a family firm and its evolving relationship with an external advisor in the management accounting field. Over a period of 15 years, strategy work was performed through (and shaped by) unfolding ‘strategy spaces’ within which the advisor made use of multiple material, spatial and discursive resources. By interpreting the empirical evidence with theoretical insights from the strategy-as-practice literature, as well as from organization studies on spac…
