Introduction and aims: Peutz-Jeghers syndrome is a rare autosomal dominant inherited disease caused by a germline mutation of the STK11/LKB1 gene, located on chromosome 19p13.3. It is characterized by mucocutaneous hyperpigmentation, hamartomatous polyposis, and predisposition to cancer. The aim of the present study was to identify and register patients with Peutz-Jeghers syndrome, describe the disease, and estimate its prevalence in Valencia (Spain). Effect of age upon airway obstruction and reversibility in adult patients with asthma.

In a cross-sectional study we evaluated the effect of aging (separately from that of duration of disease) on airway obstruction and reversibility by comparing two groups of non-smoker patients with asthma.We compared two groups of patients: group A, which had 50 subjects (8 men and 42 women) aged 59.7+/-4.6 years (mean +/- SD), and group B, comprised of 51 subjects (19 men and 32 women) who were 35.7+/-7.4 years old. Subjective symptomatology of asthma: validation of the asthma symptom checklist in an outpatient Spanish population.

The objective of this study was to validate the Asthma Symptom Checklist (ASC) so that it could be reliably used to assess the subjective symptomatology of asthma attacks in our context. Subjective symptomatology of asthma was examined in a group of 100 adult Spanish outpatients (57 women, 43 men; 17-69 years of age) with asthma. All of them completed the modified version of the ASC as well as questionnaires of depression, anxiety, and self-management of asthma (self-efficacy expectancies and health care utilization). Airway distensibility by HRCT in asthmatics and COPD with comparable airway obstruction.

Introduction: Decreased airway distensibility (AD) in response to deep inspirations, as assessed by HRCT, has been associated with the severity of asthma and COPD. Aims: The current study was designed to compare the magnitude of AD by HRCT in individuals with asthma and COPD with comparable degrees of bronchial obstruction, and to explore factors that may influence it. Results: We enrolled a total of 12 asthmatics (M/F:7/5) and 8 COPD (7/1) with comparable degree of bronchial obstruction (FEV1% predicted mean±SEM: 69.1 ± 5.2% and 61.2 ± 5.0%, respectively; p = 0.31). Airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR) is a fundamental phenomenon in asthma that can explain many aspects of the clinical manifestations of the disease. Several theories on the mechanisms of AHR have been proposed, but the true nature of this problem is yet to be defined. During the past decade, the role of lung inflation in airway physiology and its relationship to AHR have attracted major attention. Deep inspirations are known to exert strong beneficial effects on the airways of healthy humans. These effects appear to be of dual nature: bronchoprotective and bronchodilatory. Quantitative analysis of airway obstruction in lymphangioleiomyomatosis

Lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM) is a rare, cystic lung disease with progressive pulmonary function loss caused by progressively proliferating LAM cells. The degree of airway obstruction has not been well investigated within the pathogenesis of LAM. Using a combination of ex vivo computed tomography (CT), microCT and histology, the site and nature of airway obstruction in LAM explant lungs was compared with matched control lungs (n=5 each).
