Detrimental Effects of 60 kHz Sonothrombolysis in Rats with Middle Cerebral Artery Occlusion

2008

Recent studies have raised concerns about the safety of low frequency ultrasound in transcranial therapeutic application in cerebral ischemia. This study was designed to evaluate safety aspects and potential deleterious effects of low frequency, 60 kHz ultrasound in treatment of experimental middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) in rats. Forty-five male Wistar rats were submitted to either temporary (90 min; groups I and II) or permanent MCAO (groups III and IV) using the suture technique. All animals received recombinant tissue plasminogen activator (rt-PA) starting 90 min after the beginning of occlusion. Groups I and III were additionally treated with 60 kHz ultrasound (time average ac…

The effect of body posture on long range time-to-contact estimation

2011

On Earth, gravity accelerates freely moving objects downward, whereas upward-moving objects are being decelerated. Do humans take internalised knowledge of gravity into account when estimating time-to-contact (TTC, the time remaining before the moving object reaches the observer)? To answer this question, we created a motion-prediction task in which participants saw the initial part of an object's trajectory moving on a collision course prior to an occlusion. Observers had to judge when the object would make contact with them. The visual scene was presented with a head-mounted display. Participants lay either supine (looking up) or prone (looking down), suggestive of the ball either rising…

Five-Year Results of the Bioflow-III Registry:Real-World Experience with a Biodegradable Polymer Sirolimus-Eluting Stent

2018

Abstract Purpose We aimed to assess long-term safety and performance of the Orsiro sirolimus-eluting coronary stent with biodegradable polymer in a large unselected population and in pre-specified subgroups. Methods BIOFLOW-III is a prospective, multicenter, international, observational registry with follow-up visits scheduled at 6 and 12 months, and at 3 and 5 years ( NCT01553526 ). Results 1356 patients with 1738 lesions were enrolled. Of those, 392 (28.9%) declined to participate in the study extension from 18 months to 5 years, 37 (2.7%) withdrew consent, and 89 (6.6%) were lost to follow-up. At 5-years, Kaplan-Meier estimates of target lesion failure, defined as a composite of cardiac …

A multicenter 12-month experience with a new iliac side-branched device for revascularization of hypogastric arteries.

2016

Abstract Objective The aim of this study was to investigate the 1-year safety and efficacy of a new iliac side-branched device (IBD) for revascularization of the hypogastric arteries. Methods Patients receiving the E-liac (Jotec GmbH, Hechingen, Germany) side-branched device at six German vascular centers either as a stand-alone procedure or in combination with abdominal aortic aneurysm exclusion were included in a prospectively created data bank. Collected data were analyzed for baseline characteristics, procedural events, and clinical follow-up; variables included endoleaks, reinterventions, and internal iliac artery (IIA) patency. Results Between January 2012 and January 2015, a total of…

Mid-term Results of Chimney and Periscope Grafts in Supra-aortic Branches in High Risk Patients

2017

Purpose Report mid-term outcomes of thoracic endovascular aneurysm repair (TEVAR) with chimney and periscope grafts (CPG) in supra-aortic branches (SAB). Methods Retrospective analysis, from October 2009 to May 2014, of patients with aneurysms requiring TEVAR with zone 0/1/2 proximal landing in association with at least one CPG in the SAB. All patients were considered at high risk for conventional surgery. Peri-operative mortality and morbidity, retrograde type A dissection, maximum aortic transverse diameter (TD) and its post-operative evolution, endoleak, survival, freedom from cardiovascular re-interventions, and CPG freedom from occlusion during the follow-up were analysed. Results Fort…

Retrograde Recanalization of Chronic Total Occlusions in Europe: Procedural, In-Hospital, and Long-Term Outcomes From the Multicenter ERCTO Registry.

2015

BACKGROUND A retrograde approach improves the success rate of percutaneous coronary interventions (PCIs) for chronic total occlusions (CTOs). OBJECTIVES The authors describe the European experience with and outcomes of retrograde PCI revascularization for coronary CTOs. METHODS Follow-up data were collected from 1,395 patients with 1,582 CTO lesions enrolled between January 2008 and December 2012 for retrograde CTO PCI at 44 European centers. Major adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular events were defined as the composite of cardiac death, myocardial infarction, stroke, and further revascularization. RESULTS The mean patient age was 62.0 +/- 10.4 years; 88.5% were men. Procedural and clinical…

Electrophysiology and neuronal integrity following systemic arterial hypotension in a rat model of unilateral carotid artery occlusion.

2007

Patients with carotid artery stenosis may be particularly susceptible to hypotension-associated cerebral ischemia and subsequent neurological sequelae. Measuring somatosensory evoked potentials (SEP), electroencephalogram (EEG), direct current (DC) potential, and histology, we compared the temporal evolution of cortical functional perturbations as well as neuronal integrity in a model of unilateral carotid artery occlusion and systemic hypobaric hypotension (HH) at the lower limit of cerebral blood flow autoregulation (50 mm Hg). Serial measurements of EEG power spectra as well as SEP-amplitudes and latencies of N10.3 were performed before, during, and up to 60 min after 30 min-HH (n=7) or …

Hybrid Endograft Solution for Complex Iliac Anatomy

2010

The purpose of this study was to evaluate single-center results with selective use of Gore Excluder limbs (W.L. Gore & Associates, Flagstaff, AZ) in a Cook Zenith body (Cook Inc, Bloomington, IN) for elective endovascular abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) repair. A prospectively held database for patients with AAA, who were treated endovascularly between March 1999 and July 2008, was queried for patients treated with a Cook Zenith body and one or two Gore Excluder limbs. Indication, technical success, late limb occlusion, and disconnection were evaluated. From 276 patients who were treated with a Zenith body, 29 underwent repair with hybrid graft components with, in total, 41 Gore Exclud…

Central alterations of neuromuscular function and feedback from group III-IV muscle afferents following exhaustive high-intensity one-leg dynamic exe…

2015

The aims of this investigation were to describe the central alterations of neuromuscular function induced by exhaustive high-intensity one-leg dynamic exercise (OLDE, study 1) and to indirectly quantify feedback from group III-IV muscle afferents via muscle occlusion (MO, study 2) in healthy adult male humans. We hypothesized that these central alterations and their recovery are associated with changes in afferent feedback. Both studies consisted of two time-to-exhaustion tests at 85% peak power output. In study 1, voluntary activation level (VAL), M-wave, cervicomedullary motor evoked potential (CMEP), motor evoked potential (MEP), and MEP cortical silent period (CSP) of the knee extensor…

Initial experience with a new method of external polyester scaffolding for infrainguinal vein grafts.

2009

Abstract Objectives This study aims to evaluate the feasibility of external polyester scaffolding in infrainguinal bypass grafting when available vein material is suboptimal due to varicosity or dilatation. Primary objectives were short-term primary patency, assisted primary patency and secondary patency. Secondary objectives were to assess the rate of graft stenoses, infections and other adverse effects related to the use of external scaffolding. Materials and methods A total of 50 consecutive patients were included in this prospective, multicentre, feasibility study from six centres. The indication for infrainguinal bypass was critical limb ischaemia (64%), severe claudication (34%) or po…
