Statistical evaluation of aerosol retrievals from AERONET using in-situ aircraft measurements

2011

Abstract. Aerosol optical properties were measured by NOAA's Airborne Aerosol Observatory over Bondville, Illinois, during more than two years using a light aircraft. Measured properties included total light scattering, backscattering, and absorption, while calculated parameters included aerosol optical depth (AOD), Ångström exponent, single-scattering albedo, hemispheric backscatter fraction, asymmetry parameter, and submicrometer mode fraction of scattering. The in-situ aircraft measurements are compared here with AERONET measurements and retrievals of the aerosol optical properties at the same location. The comparison reveals discrepancies between the aerosol properties retrieved from AE…

Simultaneous application of Fourier transform Raman spectroscopy and differential scanning colorimetry for the in situ investigation of phase transit…

1991

Abstract The combination of Fourier transform Raman spectroscopy with differential scanning colorimetry for the in situ investigation of phase transitions is illustrated using ammonium nitrate as an example. This method helps unambiguous characterisation of different phases by providing a simultaneous probe of thermodynamic and vibrational data.

On the structure of the extra-tropical transition layer from in-situ observations

2012

Abstract. In-situ observations of atmospheric tracers from multiple measurement campaigns over the period 1994–2007 were combined to investigate the Extra-tropical Transition Layer (ExTL) region and the properties of large scale meridional transport. We used potential temperature, equivalent latitude and distance relative to the local dynamical tropopause as vertical coordinates to highlight the behaviour of trace gases in the tropopause region. Vertical coordinates based on constant PV surfaces allowed us to relate the dynamical definition of the tropopause with trace gases distributions and vertical gradients and hence analyse its latitudinal dependence and seasonal variability. Analysis …

Long time behavior for a dissipative shallow water model

2013

We consider the two-dimensional shallow water model derived by Levermore and Sammartino (Nonlinearity 14,2001), describing the motion of an incompressible fluid, confined in a shallow basin, with varying bottom topography. We construct the approximate inertial manifolds for the associated dynamical system and estimate its order. Finally, considering the whole domain R^2 and under suitable conditions on the time dependent forcing term, we prove the L^2 asymptotic decay of the weak solutions.
