First imaging of corotating interaction regions using the STEREO spacecraft

2008

Plasma parcels are observed propagating from the Sun out to the large coronal heights monitored by the Heliospheric Imagers (HI) instruments onboard the NASA STEREO spacecraft during September 2007. The source region of these out-flowing parcels is found to corotate with the Sun and to be rooted near the western boundary of an equatorial coronal hole. These plasma enhancements evolve during their propagation through the HI cameras' fields of view and only becoming fully developed in the outer camera field of view. We provide evidence that HI is observing the formation of a Corotating Interaction Region (CIR) where fast solar wind from the equatorial coronal hole is interacting with the slow…

A Langevin Approach to the Diffusion Equation

2002

We propose a generalized Langevin equation as a model for the diffusion equation of air pollution in the atmosphere. We write down a partial stochastic differential equation for the pollutant concentration, which we solve exactly obtaining the first and the second moment of the pollutant concentration. We obtain a linear multiplicative stochastic differential equation for the Fourier components of the concentration, which can be used to calculate higher moments of the concentration. We obtain the exact steady state solution in the case of neutral atmosphere and a general expression of the mean concentration as a function of the fluctuation intensity of the wind speed, the diffusion coeffici…

Stable control of pulse speed in parametric three-wave solitons.

2006

International audience; We analyze the control of the propagation speed of three wave packets interacting in a medium with quadratic nonlinearity and dispersion. We find analytical expressions for mutually trapped pulses with a common velocity in the form of a three-parameter family of solutions of the three-wave resonant interaction. The stability of these novel parametric solitons is simply related to the value of their common group velocity.

Laser control in a bifurcating region

2006

We present a complete analysis of the laser control of a model molecular system using both optimal control theory and adiabatic techniques. This molecule has a particular potential energy surface with a bifurcating region connecting three potential wells which allows a variety of processes such as isomerization, tunnelling or implementation of quantum gates on one or two qubits. The parameters of the model have been chosen so as to reproduce the main features of H3CO which is a molecule-benchmark for such dynamics. We show the feasibility of different processes and we investigate their robustness against variations of laser field. We discuss the conditions under which each method of control…

The 1997 spectroscopic GEISA databank

1999

International audience; The current version GEISA-97 of the computer-accessible database system GEISA (Gestion et Etude des Informations Spectroscopiques Atmosphériques: Management and Study of Atmospheric Spectroscopic Information) is described. This catalogue contains 1,346,266 entries. These are spectroscopic parameters required to describe adequately the individual spectral lines belonging to 42 molecules (96 isotopic species) and located between 0 and 22,656 cm-1. The featured molecules are of interest in studies of the terrestrial as well as the other planetary atmospheres, especially those of the Giant Planets. GEISA-97 contains also a catalog of absorption cross-sections of molecule…

High-resolution study of some doubly excited vibrational states of PH2D: the m1 + m2, m2 + m5, m2 + m3, and m2 + m6 bands

2004

Abstract The absorption bands ν 1 + ν 2 , ν 2 + ν 3 , and ν 2 + ν 6 of PH 2 D have been recorded for the first time using a high-resolution Bruker 120 HR interferometer, and rotationally analyzed. Some transitions belonging to the very weak band ν 2 + ν 5 and enhanced in intensity by strong interactions with the ν 1 + ν 2 band were also assigned. Sets of parameters obtained from the fit reproduce experimental line position of the bands ν 1 + ν 2 and ν 2 + ν 3 with about the experimental accuracy. The residuals of the ro-vibrational energies of the ν 2 + ν 6 band are about 10 times larger. Reasons for the poorer reproduction of the latter data are given.

Optimum core dimension for minimizing proximity effect losses of an AC inductor for a galvanically isolated PV inverter

2012

In this paper, it is shown how winding proximity effect losses in an existing AC inductor can be reduced without changing the actual winding. Instead, the core dimensions are changed with significant effects. For this purpose, Maxwell (ANSOFT) electromagnetic software package is used to investigate flux patterns and their influence on eddy current losses in the windings. Various core dimensions are analyzed with respect to flux patterns, and a design where the flux encloses a minimum number of winding layers is found. This significantly reduces the high frequency resistance of the windings up to 62.2% in comparison with the original design. The results are also explained in terms of the win…

Determination of Aerosol Size Distributions from Spectral Attenuation Measurements

1971

An iteration method for the determination of size distributions of aerosols from spectral attenuation data, similar to the one previously published for clouds, is presented. The basis for this iteration is to consider the extinction efficiency factor of particles as a set of weighting functions covering the entire radius region of a distribution. The weighting functions were calculated exactly from the Mie theory. Aerosol distributions are shown derived from tests with analytical size distributions and also generated from measured aerosol extinction data in seven spectral channels from 0.4-microto 10-micro wavelength in continental aerosols. The influence of relative humidity on the complex…

Reappraising the appropriate calculation of a common meteorological quantity: Potential Temperature

2020

Abstract. The potential temperature is a widely used quantity in atmospheric science since it is conserved for air's adiabatic changes of state. Its definition involves the specific heat capacity of dry air, which is traditionally assumed as constant. However, the literature provides different values of this allegedly constant parameter, which are reviewed and discussed in this study. Furthermore, we derive the potential temperature for a temperature-dependent parameterization of the specific heat capacity of dry air, thus providing a new reference potential temperature with a more rigorous basis. This new reference shows different values and vertical gradients in the upper troposphere and …
