Partial melting of metabasic rocks and the generation of tonalitic–trondhjemitic–granodioritic (TTG) crust in the Archaean: Constraints from phase eq…

2020

Abstract Rocks of tonalitic–trondhjemitic–granodioritic (TTG) composition preserved in Archaean terranes represent fragments of the Earth’s earliest-formed continental crust, and are thought to have formed via partial melting of hydrated metabasalt. The geodynamic environments in which such high-grade metamorphism and anatexis may have occurred in the early Earth is strongly debated. Constraining the pressure ( P ) and temperature ( T ) conditions at which melts of appropriate composition can be derived from protoliths containing plausible mineral assemblages is central to addressing this question. Phase equilibrium modelling has been undertaken for an enriched Archaean tholeiite bulk compo…

Delamination and recycling of Archaean crust caused by gravitational instabilities

2013

The volume of Archaean crust preserved at Earth’s surface today is low. Thermodynamic calculations and geodynamic modelling show that the thick, primary crust that would have formed on a much hotter Archaean Earth was denser than the underlying mantle, and would have therefore been recycled back into the mantle as drips.

Improving and enhancing NWP based wind power forecasts under Norwegian conditions

2015

Doktorgradsavhandling i ingeniørvitenskap, Universitetet i Agder, 2015 This thesis studies methods for improving and enhancing NWP based wind power forecasts for cases from the Western coast of Norway. This is an area with excellent wind conditions, but where the installed wind power capacity at present is limited. The area is characterized by a rugged coastline and complex terrain, which have earlier been shown to lead to high wind power forecast errors. The overall aim of the thesis is to study how this kind of conditions influence wind power forecast errors and to investigate how wind power forecast models can be made more resistant to the challenges these conditions pose. The data basis…

Extended Environmental Contour Methods for Long-Term Extreme Response Analysis of Offshore Wind Turbines

2020

Author's accepted manuscript. Environmental contour method is an efficient method for predicting the long-term extreme response of offshore structures. The traditional environmental contour is obtained using the joint distribution of mean wind speed, significant wave height, and spectral peak period. To improve the accuracy of traditional environmental contour method, a modified method was proposed considering the non-monotonic aerodynamic behavior of offshore wind turbines. Still, the modified method assumes constant wind turbulence intensity. In this paper, we extend the existing environmental contour methods by considering the wind turbulence intensity as a stochastic variable. The 50-ye…

Evolution of neodymium isotopic signature of seawater during the Late Cretaceous: implications for intermediate and deep circulation.

2016

20 pages; International audience; Neodymium isotopic compositions (εNd) have been largely used for the last fifty years as a tracer of past ocean circulation, and more intensively during the last decade to investigate ocean circulation during the Cretaceous period. Despite a growing set of data, circulation patterns still remain unclear during this period. In particular, the identification of the deep-water masses and their spatial extension within the different oceanic basins are poorly constrained. In this study we present new deep-water εNd data inferred from the Nd isotope composition of fish remains and Fe–Mn oxyhydroxide coatings on foraminifera tests, along with new εNd data of resid…

Characterizing weld pool surfaces from polarization state of thermal emissions

2013

International audience; In this Letter, a vision-based remote sensing methodology is proposed to measure the topography of weld pool surfaces from one single view. Thermal radiations emitted by the hot liquid metal at a wavelength within the arc plasma blind spectral window are acquired by a wavefront division polarimetric system. The refractive index of the liquid metal and the topography of the weld pool surface are inferred from the polarimetric state of the thermal radiations.

Cross-hemispheric transport of central African biomass burning pollutants: implications for downwind ozone production

2010

Pollutant plumes with enhanced concentrations of trace gases and aerosols were observed over the southern coast of West Africa during August 2006 as part of the AMMA wet season field campaign. Plumes were observed both in the mid and upper troposphere. In this study we examined the origin of these pollutant plumes, and their potential to photochemically produce ozone (O3) downwind over the Atlantic Ocean. Their possible contribution to the Atlantic O3 maximum is also discussed. Runs using the BOLAM mesoscale model including biomass burning carbon monoxide (CO) tracers were used to confirm an origin from central African biomass burning fires. The…

Applying Numerical Weather Prediction Models to the Production of New European Wind Atlas : Sensitivity studies of the wind climate to the planetary …

2018

Reliable and precise information about the wind speed climate is crucial for the development of wind energy. Meteorological processes in the mesoscale (2 – 200 km) can be represented using Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) models such as the Weather Research and Forecast model (WRF), but before their application for creating wind energy atlases, their results and sensitivity to modelling parameters should be investigated. Here the WRF model wind speed results for the year 2015 for the Baltic Sea region are investigated, and the effect of the planetary boundary layer parametrization scheme is analyzed.

Multi-Resolution error analysis of predicted absorption coefficients. Method and application to the infrared spectrum of methane at high temperature.

2010

La version V2 inclut les modifications proposées par les reviewers.; International audience; A general method for the estimation of the confidence interval of molecular absorption coefficients is presented. Statistical numerical experiments are implemented to quantify the propagation of errors from line parameters to absorption coefficients or cross-sections as a function of the resolution. The method uses line parameter predictions (position and intensity) with estimated uncertainties derived from global polyad models. This work is especially intended to provide expert information for applications requiring theoretical predictions for which the present state of the art of line by line high…
