First-order visual interneurons distribute distinct contrast and luminance information across ON and OFF pathways to achieve stable behavior

The accurate processing of contrast is the basis for all visually guided behaviors. Visual scenes with rapidly changing illumination challenge contrast computation because photoreceptor adaptation is not fast enough to compensate for such changes. Yet, human perception of contrast is stable even when the visual environment is quickly changing, suggesting rapid post receptor luminance gain control. Similarly, in the fruit fly Drosophila, such gain control leads to luminance invariant behavior for moving OFF stimuli. According to a modern view, simple cells of the cat striate cortex are considered to operate as apart of Fourier analysis system thus leading to the idea that the operational mechanism of the visual cortex is concerned with the analysis of spatial frequencies. High-resolution far-field integral-imaging camera by double snapshot

In multi-view three-dimensional imaging, to capture the elemental images of distant objects, the use of a field-like lens that projects the reference plane onto the microlens array is necessary. In this case, the spatial resolution of reconstructed images is equal to the spatial density of microlenses in the array. In this paper we report a simple method, based on the realization of double snapshots, to double the 2D pixel density of reconstructed scenes. Experiments are reported to support the proposed approach.

Color illusions also deceive CNNs for low-level vision tasks: Analysis and implications.

The study of visual illusions has proven to be a very useful approach in vision science. In this work we start by showing that, while convolutional neural networks (CNNs) trained for low-level visual tasks in natural images may be deceived by brightness and color illusions, some network illusions can be inconsistent with the perception of humans. Next, we analyze where these similarities and differences may come from. Recent research with skilled adult readers has consistently revealed an advantage of consonants over vowels in visual-word recognition (i.e., the so-called "consonant bias"). Repeatability of in vitro power profile measurements for multifocal contact lenses

Abstract Purpose To evaluate the repeatability of an optical device (NIMO TR1504, Lambda-X, Belgium) for measuring multifocal contact lens power profiles. Methods The NIMO TR1504 was used to measure power profiles 30 times for each of 10 different contact lenses from 4 major companies. All contact lenses were labelled as −3 D for distance vision; half were for high addition and half for low addition. The optical zone in all measurements was set to 3-mm radius. For each lens, the median power profile and the residuals of the 30 measurements were calculated. To study the antibacterial and antifungal effects of soft contact lens disinfection solutions.Eight contact lens disinfection solutions containing hydrogen peroxide or biguanides or polyquad compounds were evaluated with respect to their ability to disinfect a saline solution experimentally contaminated with different bacteria and with a fungus. We used cultures in blood Agar, MuellerHinton agar and Saboureaud's agar to identify the bacterial and fungal growth following 14 h of exposure to the disinfection solutions.Hydrogen peroxide, DYMED and polyhexamide solutions prevented the growth of the four bacteria studied.
