Agreement among 3 optical imaging methods for the assessment of optic disc topography.

2005

Purpose To assess the agreement of disc topography measurements between the Heidelberg Retina Tomograph (HRT II), Retinal Thickness Analyzer (RTA), and Optical Coherence Tomograph (StratusOCT). Design Observational cross-sectional study. Participants Forty-two randomly chosen eyes of 42 subjects. Methods Each subject underwent HRT II, RTA, and StratusOCT examination. Two experienced examiners drew the contour lines for the HRT II and RTA. Bland and Altman plots were used to evaluate agreement for each topographic parameter among the instruments. The Spearman coefficient of rank correlation was evaluated for each topographic parameter. Main Outcome Measures Agreement in the measurement of op…

Proposal of a new diffractive corneal inlay to improve near vision in a presbyopic eye

2020

[EN] A new class of diffraction-based corneal inlays for treatment of presbyopia is described. The inlay is intended to achieve an improvement of the near focus quality over previous designs. Our proposal is a two-zone hybrid device with separated amplitude and phase areas having a central aperture and no refractive power. An array of micro-holes is distributed on the surface of the inlay conforming a binary photon sieve. In this way, the central hole of the disk contributes to the zero order of diffraction, and the light diffracted by the micro-holes in the peripheral photon sieve produces a real focus for near vision. We employed ray-tracing software to study the performance of the new in…

Fractal-structured multifocal intraocular lens

2017

[EN] In this work, we present a new concept of IOL design inspired by the demonstrated properties of reduced chromatic aberration and extended depth of focus of Fractal zone plates. A detailed description of a proof of concept IOL is provided. The result was numerically characterized, and fabricated by lathe turning. The prototype was tested in vitro using dedicated optical system and software. The theoretical Point Spread Function along the optical axis, computed for several wavelengths, showed that for each wavelength, the IOL produces two main foci surrounded by numerous secondary foci that partially overlap each other for different wavelengths. The result is that both, the near focus an…

Vascular Third Nerve Compression—A Possible Cause of Episodic Vertical Diplopia?

2006

We report a 74-year-old man with a 2-year history of episodes of vertical diplopia. In the beginning, there was one episode every 2–3 months, which increased over time to an average of one episode every 2 weeks. These complaints were attributed to an MRI-documented vascular third nerve compression. Treatment with gabapentin (400 mg q.i.d.) was followed by cessation of episodic diplopia.

Clinical Case: A 42-year-old man presented with ptosis and mios…

Core-Shell Arginine-Containing Chitosan Microparticles for Enhanced Transcorneal Permeation of Drugs

2019

Chitosan oligosaccharide (C) was functionalized with L-arginine (A) and short hydrocarbon chains (C-8) to design an amphiphilic copolymer, henceforth CAC(8), leading to microparticles (MPs) consisting of an arginine-decorated hydrophilic shell and inner hydrophobic domains allowing the encapsulation of high amount hydrophobic drugs such as sorafenib tosylate (>10% w/w). L-arginine side chains were selected in order to impart the final MPs enhanced transcorneal penetration properties, thus overcoming the typical biological barriers which hamper the absorption of drugs upon topical ocular administration. The mucoadhesive properties and drug release profile of the CAC(8) MPs (CAC(8)-MPs) were …

Rapid in vitro test to predict ocular tissue permeability based on biopartitioning micellar chromatography.

2003

The drug permeability prediction across the ocular tissues is important in the development of new drugs and drug delivery strategies. Physicochemical characteristics of drugs, mainly acid-base character, hydrophobicity and the molecular size determine both their transport across the eye tissue barriers and their retention in biopartitioning micellar chromatography (BMC). An in vitro model able to describe and predict the whole cornea drug permeability is proposed. The model uses the retention of drugs in BMC and molecular weight (MW) as predictive variables. The relationships between drug retention data in BMC and their bibliographic permeability values in stroma, epithelium-plus-stroma and…

Novel inulin-based mucoadhesive micelles loaded with corticosteroids as potential transcorneal permeation enhancers

2017

In this work a new copolymer of inulin (INU) derivatized with ethylendiamine (EDA) and retinoic acid (RA), named INU-EDA-RA, was synthetized, characterized and employed to produce micelles as carriers for topical administration of corticosteroids for the potential treatment of diseases of posterior eye segment. Spectroscopic analysis confirmed a molar derivatization degree of 11.30 and 4.30% in EDA and RA, respectively. INU-EDA-RA micelles are capable of strong mucoadhesive interactions which result time-independent and stable over time but concentration depending. Moreover micelles are able to encapsulate efficiently from 3 to 13% (w/w) of lipophilic drugs, as dexamethasone, triamcinolone …

Microfibrillar polymeric ocular inserts for triamcinolone acetonide delivery.

2019

Abstract Despite eye drops generally represent the most convenient, simple and patient-friendly formulations to treat ocular diseases, they suffer from poor retention on the ocular surface and low drug bioavailability leading to the necessity of prolonged and continuous treatment over time. Therefore, ocular insert could represent an innovative way to benefit from ocular topical administration while minimizing all the relevant limitation related to this route of administration. Polymeric non-erodible mucoadhesive ocular inserts should be comfortable and should rapidly adhere on the ocular surface, remain in situ for prolonged period, assure a reproducible and controlled drug release as well…

Quality of dietary supplements in ophthalmology

2006

International audience; Purpose: A rising number of dietary supplements are available to prevent age–related ocular pathologies such as AMD or dry eye syndrome. The purpose of this work was to evaluate the quality of dietary supplements containing omega–3 polyunsaturated fatty acids in terms of lipid, vitamin E and heavy metals composition. Dietary supplements designed for improving mental well–being were included in this study since they should share some similarities. Methods: Twenty dietary complements were analyzed (6 for dry eye prevention, 4 for AMD prevention and 10 for improving mental well–being). Lipids and lipophilic vitamins were extracted. The distribution of the lipid classes w…
