Structural invariants for the prediction of relative toxicities of polychloro dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans

Multivariate models are reported that can predict the relative toxicity of compounds with severe environmental impact, namely polychloro dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and dibenzofurans (PCDFs). Multiple linear regression analysis (MLR) and partial least square projections of latent variables (PLS) show the usefulness of graph-theoretical descriptors, mainly topological charge indices (TCIs), in these series. The general trends of the group are correctly reproduced and better results are presented than have previously been published. In general, the more toxic compounds exhibit more symmetric molecular structures.

Radiation Tolerance Tests of Small-Sized CsI(Tl) Scintillators Coupled to Photodiodes

2009

Radiation tolerance of small-sized CsI (Tl) crystals coupled to silicon photodiodes was studied by using protons. Irradiations up to the fluence of 1012 protons/cm2 were used. Degradation of light output by less than 5% was achieved.

We investigated the merits of different event parameters in the identification of Light Charged Particles (LCPs) with CsI(Tl) scintillators read out by photodiodes at high incident energy (400 MeV/u). This investigation is made possible by digital signal processing the output signals. As in the conventional analogue case, the digitized signals allow the discrimination of light charged particles by computing the fast and slow components. Seawater carbonate chemistry and percentage cover of macroalgal species at three locations at Vulcano, Italy

Beneficial effects of CO2 on photosynthetic organisms will be a key driver of ecosystem change under ocean acidification. Predicting the responses of macroalgal species to ocean acidification is complex, but we demonstrate that the response of assemblages to elevated CO2 are correlated with inorganic carbon physiology. We assessed abundance patterns and a proxy for CO2:HCO3- use (delta 13C values) of macroalgae along a gradient of CO2 at a volcanic seep, and examined how shifts in species abundance at other Mediterranean seeps are related to macroalgal inorganic carbon physiology. L'articolo parte dall'assunto che la categoria dell'"odio" (la parola "odio") sia, da qualche tempo, al centro di una sovra-esposizione mediatica, che a sua volta si traduce in una corrispondente sovra-esposizione politico-criminale, caratterizzata da una massiccia richiesta di criminalizzazione di condotte che si assumono pervase, appunto, da quel sentimento. Multi-spectral photoplethysmography biosensor

A photoplethysmography (PPG) signal can provide very useful information about a subject's hemodynamic status in a hospital or home environment. A newly developed portable multi-spectral photoplethysmography device has been used for studies of 11 healthy subjects. The developed optical fiber biosensor comprises one multi-wavelength laser diode (405nm, 660nm and 780nm) and a single photodiode with multi-channel signal output processing and built in Li-ion accumulator; special software was created for visualization and measuring of the MS-PPG signals. ARM7TDMI-S LPC2148, NXP (founded by Philips) 32 bit processor with clock frequency of 60 MHz performs measurement and analysis of the signal.

Stereoselective synthesis and application of tridentate aminodiols derived from (+)-pulegone

Abstract A library of tridentate aminodiols, derived from naturally occurring (R)-(+)-pulegone, was synthesized and applied as chiral catalysts in the addition of diethylzinc to benzaldehyde. The reduction of pulegone furnished pulegol, which was transformed into allylic trichloroacetamide via Overman rearrangement of the corresponding trichloroacetimidate. The protected enamine was subjected to dihydroxylation with OsO4/NMO system resulting in a 1:1 mixture of (1R,2R,4R)- and (1S,2S,4R)-aminodiol diastereomers. Bivalves from the Triassic-Jurassic transition in Northern Spain (Asturias and Western Basque-Cantabrian Basin)

Abstract. Bivalve mollusks from the Triassic-Jurassic transition collected in eight localities in Asturias and the western Basque-Cantabrian Basin (Palencia province) are systematically revised. Preservation is poor at all localities. The dominant Rhaetian bivalves are Isocyprina concentrica (Moore) and Bakevellia (Bakevelloides) praecursor (Quenstedt). These species, together with Isocyprina cf. ewaldi (Bornemann), Pteromya cf. crowcombeia (Moore), Pseudoplacunopsis alpina (Winkler), and Modiolus? sp. (cf. minimus J. Increased ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase (EROD) activity is a sensitive biomarker of exposure to the chemicals which activate the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) and induce the cytochrome P450 system, such as many polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs).
