Filtering design for two-dimensional Markovian jump systems with state-delays and deficient mode information
2014
This paper is concerned with the problem of H"~ filtering for a class of two-dimensional Markovian jump linear systems described by the Fornasini-Marchesini local state-space model. The systems under consideration are subject to state-delays and deficient mode information in the Markov chain. The description of deficient mode information is comprehensive that simultaneously includes the exactly known, partially unknown and uncertain transition probabilities. By invoking the properties of the transition probability matrix, together with the convexification of uncertain domains, a new H"~ performance analysis criterion for the filtering error system is firstly derived. Then, via some matrix i…
Impact of chaotic dynamics on the performance of metaheuristic optimization algorithms : An experimental analysis
2022
Random mechanisms including mutations are an internal part of evolutionary algorithms, which are based on the fundamental ideas of Darwin's theory of evolution as well as Mendel's theory of genetic heritage. In this paper, we debate whether pseudo-random processes are needed for evolutionary algorithms or whether deterministic chaos, which is not a random process, can be suitably used instead. Specifically, we compare the performance of 10 evolutionary algorithms driven by chaotic dynamics and pseudo-random number generators using chaotic processes as a comparative study. In this study, the logistic equation is employed for generating periodical sequences of different lengths, which are use…
Ordinal mind change complexity of language identification
1997
The approach of ordinal mind change complexity, introduced by Freivalds and Smith, uses constructive ordinals to bound the number of mind changes made by a learning machine. This approach provides a measure of the extent to which a learning machine has to keep revising its estimate of the number of mind changes it will make before converging to a correct hypothesis for languages in the class being learned. Recently, this measure, which also suggests the difficulty of learning a class of languages, has been used to analyze the learnability of rich classes of languages. Jain and Sharma have shown that the ordinal mind change complexity for identification from positive data of languages formed…
Model approximation for two-dimensional Markovian jump systems with state-delays and imperfect mode information
2014
Published version of an article in the journal: Multidimensional Systems and Signal Processing. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s11045-013-0276-x This paper is concerned with the problem of {Mathematical expression} model approximation for a class of two-dimensional (2-D) discrete-time Markovian jump linear systems with state-delays and imperfect mode information. The 2-D system is described by the well-known Fornasini-Marchesini local state-space model, and the imperfect mode information in the Markov chain simultaneously involves the exactly known, partially unknown and uncertain transition probabilities. By using the characteristics of the transition proba…
On the Calmness of a Class of Multifunctions
2002
The paper deals with the calmness of a class of multifunctions in finite dimensions. Its first part is devoted to various conditions for calmness, which are derived in terms of coderivatives and subdifferentials. The second part demonstrates the importance of calmness in several areas of nonsmooth analysis. In particular, we focus on nonsmooth calculus and solution stability in mathematical programming and in equilibrium problems. The derived conditions find a number of applications there.

Flexible Grouping as a Means for Classroom Management in a Heterogeneous Classroom
2011
This article concerns issues of classroom management in heterogeneous classrooms. Although research in the field of learning styles has yielded mixed results, there is a call for information about how they could be used to individualize instruction, especially in primary schools. This article is part of an ethnographic study aiming to examine teacher collaboration in a primary school and it draws strongly on field notes and on interviews with teachers. The intention was to discover how the two teachers in the classroom studied categorized pupils according to the learning styles model they had invented, and how the resulting groups were used for the purposes of classroom management. The stu…
SISALv2: a comprehensive speleothem isotope database with multiple age–depth models
2020
Characterizing the temporal uncertainty in palaeoclimate records is crucial for analysing past climate change, correlating climate events between records, assessing climate periodicities, identifying potential triggers and evaluating climate model simulations. The first global compilation of speleothem isotope records by the SISAL (Speleothem Isotope Synthesis and Analysis) working group showed that age model uncertainties are not systematically reported in the published literature, and these are only available for a limited number of records (ca. 15 %, n = 107/691). To improve the usefulness of the SISAL database, we have (i) improved the database’s spatio-temporal coverage and (ii) create…
Permeability and toxicological profile estimation of organochlorine compounds by biopartitioning micellar chromatography
2008
This paper points out the usefulness of biopartitioning micellar chromatography (BMC) as a high-throughput primary screening tool providing key information about the oral absorption, skin permeability (Kp), brain–blood distribution coefficient (BB) and ecotoxicological parameters such as median lethal concentration (LC50) and bioconcentration factors of 15 organochloride compounds. The retention data of compounds in BMC conditions were interpolated in previously developed quantitative–retention activity relationships by our research group. Results show that the compounds studied readily cross the intestinal barrier (oral absorption >ercnt;) and the blood–brain barrier (log BB >p;0.4). In ad…
Fallzahlplanung bei ophthalmologischen Studien*
2000
An essential aspect in the cooperation of clinic and biometry consists in designing of studies, e.g. during the preparation of grant applications or for review by official drug surveillance institutions. A central aspect in study planning is the design-adequate and well-documented prediction of sample size, which should be recommended for any intended study. Based on several examples for sample size planning in study designs, which are of common relevance for ophthalmology, guidelines are derived to enable clinical researchers to perform sample size planning on their own. The latter can be based on the various available software packages for sample size prediction.
