Concordance Analysis

2011

Background In this article, we describe qualitative and quantitative methods for assessing the degree of agreement (concordance) between two measuring or rating techniques. An assessment of concordance is particularly important when a new measuring technique is introduced.

Comment on ``Friedel phases and phases of transmission amplitudes in quantum scattering systems" by T. Taniguchi and M. Buettiker

1999

We take a modified boundary condition at the dead end of a stub to simulate transmission zeroes being replaced by minima and then the discontinuous phase slip (or decrease) at the transmission zeroes are replaced by a continuous but rapid phase slip. The modified boundary condition can be continuously tuned to give the results of the stub with hard wall boundary condition at the dead end of stub. Even when the phase slip is continuous one can obtain information about the density of states in the stub region from the scattering phases.

Density-functional tight-binding for beginners

2009

This article is a pedagogical introduction to density-functional tight-binding (DFTB) method. We derive it from the density-functional theory, give the details behind the tight-binding formalism, and give practical recipes for parametrization: how to calculate pseudo-atomic orbitals and matrix elements, and especially how to systematically fit the short-range repulsions. Our scope is neither to provide a historical review nor to make performance comparisons, but to give beginner's guide for this approximate, but in many ways invaluable, electronic structure simulation method--now freely available as an open-source software package, hotbit.

libvdwxc: A library for exchange-correlation functionals in the vdW-DF family

2017

We present libvdwxc, a general library for evaluating the energy and potential for the family of vdW-DF exchange--correlation functionals. libvdwxc provides an efficient implementation of the vdW-DF method and can be interfaced with various general-purpose DFT codes. Currently, the GPAW and Octopus codes implement interfaces to libvdwxc. The present implementation emphasizes scalability and parallel performance, and thereby enables \textit{ab initio} calculations of nanometer-scale complexes. The numerical accuracy is benchmarked on the S22 test set whereas parallel performance is benchmarked on ligand-protected gold nanoparticles ($\text{Au}_{144}(\text{SC}_{11}\text{NH}_{25})_{60}$) up to…

Conditional Entropy-Based Evaluation of Information Dynamics in Physiological Systems

2014

We present a framework for quantifying the dynamics of information in coupled physiological systems based on the notion of conditional entropy (CondEn). First, we revisit some basic concepts of information dynamics, providing definitions of self entropy (SE), cross entropy (CE) and transfer entropy (TE) as measures of information storage and transfer in bivariate systems. We discuss also the generalization to multivariate systems, showing the importance of SE, CE and TE as relevant factors in the decomposition of the system predictive information. Then, we show how all these measures can be expressed in terms of CondEn, and devise accordingly a framework for their data-efficient estimation.…

Arabic Named Entity Recognition: A Feature-Driven Study

2009

The named entity recognition task aims at identifying and classifying named entities within an open-domain text. This task has been garnering significant attention recently as it has been shown to help improve the performance of many natural language processing applications. In this paper, we investigate the impact of using different sets of features in three discriminative machine learning frameworks, namely, support vector machines, maximum entropy and conditional random fields for the task of named entity recognition. Our language of interest is Arabic. We explore lexical, contextual and morphological features and nine data-sets of different genres and annotations. We measure the impact …

On conditional probabilities and their canonical extensions to Boolean algebras of compound conditionals

2023

In this paper we investigate canonical extensions of conditional probabilities to Boolean algebras of conditionals. Before entering into the probabilistic setting, we first prove that the lattice order relation of every Boolean algebra of conditionals can be characterized in terms of the well-known order relation given by Goodman and Nguyen. Then, as an interesting methodological tool, we show that canonical extensions behave well with respect to conditional subalgebras. As a consequence, we prove that a canonical extension and its original conditional probability agree on basic conditionals. Moreover, we verify that the probability of conjunctions and disjunctions of conditionals in a rece…

Automated detection of patient movement during a CBCT scan based on the projection data.

2015

Objectives To develop an automated procedure to detect patient motion on the projection images acquired during a cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scan and to evaluate the method's feasibility on small real-world CBCT images in relation to visual assessment. Methods Based on optical flow theory, software was developed using the sequence of the projection images of a CBCT machine for automated detection of patient motion. Averaged acceleration vectors were used as measurement data and compared with visual assessment of the projection images displayed as video. Seventy-nine CBCT data sets (small field-of-view: 40 mm) from our patient database were selected in a sequential fashion and evalu…

Influence of voxel size on the accuracy of linear measurements of the condyle in images of cone beam computed tomography: A pilot study

2018

Background To analyze the influence of voxel size and exposure time on the accuracy of linear measurements of the condyle. Material and methods Four macerated hemi-mandibles of pigs were scanned in nine different voxel size protocols. Three-dimensional models of the condyle were generated in order to establish a comparison between linear measurements obtained with each voxel protocol and those obtained with a caliper (gold standard). The comparison between the protocols was performed considering the average of the two measurements of the condyle in the latero-medial (LM) and antero-posterior (AP) axes and also through repeated measurement ANOVA with rank transformation. The level of signifi…
