A New Approach to Investigate Students’ Behavior by Using Cluster Analysis as an Unsupervised Methodology in the Field of Education
2016
The problem of taking a set of data and separating it into subgroups where the ele- ments of each subgroup are more similar to each other than they are to elements not in the subgroup has been extensively studied through the statistical method of cluster analysis. In this paper we want to discuss the application of this method to the field of education: particularly, we want to present the use of cluster analysis to separate students into groups that can be recognized and characterized by common traits in their answers to a questionnaire, without any prior knowledge of what form those groups would take (unsupervised classification). We start from a detailed study of the data processing need…
Computer Vision Tools for 3D Modelling in Archaeology
2013
In archaeological Cultural Heritage study 3D modelling has become a very useful process to obtain indispensable data for documentation and visualization. Nowadays the continuous request to achieve photorealistic 3D models has led to testing different techniques and methodologies to speed up both data acquisition and the data processing phase. There are many examples of surveys conducted with the use of range-based and image-based techniques, but, in the last few years, the scientific research has been increasingly moving towards automatic procedures using Computer Vision approach to reduce time during data processing. Computer Vision approach offers a great opportunity for archaeological su…
Introduction to ADT/ADT3D
2012
ADT approach was successfully used within the last years to solve crystal structure of nanocrystalline material ab-inito using programs initially written for X-ray diffraction data. The methodology of ADT data analysis including data extraction in a format suitable for established structure solution programs was developed. A collection of processing routines was implemented into dedicated software ADT3D. Here the main steps of ADT data processing are explained, and the complete sequence of steps from importing raw data to saving the hklI file is demonstrated.
geomIO: An Open‐Source MATLAB Toolbox to Create the Initial Configuration of 2‐D/3‐D Thermo‐Mechanical Simulations From 2‐D Vector Drawings
2019
Creating the initial geometry and temperature configuration of 3D numerical simulations is a challenging task. Professional tools are expensive. They often have a steep learning curve and do mostly not interface with the numerical simulation software used by the geodynamics and tectonics academic community. There, we developed geomIO (geometry Input/Output), a MATLAB toolbox to create the initial configuration of geological models regarding model geometry and temperature structure. geomIO allows users to create a geo-referenced 3D volume by drawing multiple 2D cross-sections in a standard vector graphics editor. The volume is then used to assign material properties and set up initial temper…
OpenHVSR - Processing toolkit: Enhanced HVSR processing of distributed microtremor measurements and spatial variation of their informative content
2018
Abstract The investigation of seismic ambient noise (microtremor) in spectral ratio form, known as the Horizontal-to-Vertical Spectral Ratio technique, is extremely popular nowadays both to investigate large areas in a reduced amount of time, and to leverage a wider choice of low cost equipment. In general, measurements at multiple locations are collected to generate multiple, individual spectral ratio curves. Recently, however, there has been an increasing interest in spatially correlating informative content from different locations. Accordingly, we introduce a new computer program, “OpenHVSR – Processing Toolkit”, developed in Matlab (R2015b), specifically engineered to enhance data proc…
Environmental Data Processing by Clustering Methods for Energy Forecast and Planning
2011
This paper presents a statistical approach based on the k-means clustering technique to manage environmental sampled data to evaluate and to forecast of the energy deliverable by different renewable sources in a given site. In particular, wind speed and solar irradiance sampled data are studied in association to the energy capability of a wind generator and a photovoltaic (PV) plant, respectively. The proposed method allows the sub-sets of useful data, describing the energy capability of a site, to be extracted from a set of experimental observations belonging the considered site. The data collection is performed in Sicily, in the south of Italy, as case study. As far as the wind generation…
Hierarchically nested factor model from multivariate data
2005
We show how to achieve a statistical description of the hierarchical structure of a multivariate data set. Specifically we show that the similarity matrix resulting from a hierarchical clustering procedure is the correlation matrix of a factor model, the hierarchically nested factor model. In this model, factors are mutually independent and hierarchically organized. Finally, we use a bootstrap based procedure to reduce the number of factors in the model with the aim of retaining only those factors significantly robust with respect to the statistical uncertainty due to the finite length of data records.
The Model of Possible Web Data Retrieval
2015
In the Dempster-Shafer's theory of evidence, for incorporating uncertainty, the valuation assigns to the data tables the degrees of belief for these data. Firstly, we are looking for the answers to the following questions. Is there a valuation-based system in which combination and marginalization operate on valuations? Has this system prosperities analogical to the t-norm system? In the t-norm system of the valuation for the specific database attributes configuration can be described the algebra of possible data set in which can be interpreted the Information Retrieval Logic.
The Analysis of Auxological Data by Means of Nonlinear Multivariate Growth Curves
1999
In this paper we treat the problem to analyse a data set constituted by multivariate growth curves for different subjects; thus in this context we deal with 3-way data tables. Nevertheless, it is not possible using factorial techniques proposed to deal with 3-way data matrices, because the observations are generally not equally spaced; moreover a multilevel approach founded on polynomial models is not suitable to deal with intrinsic nonlinear models. We propose a non-factorial technique to analyse auxological data sets using an intrinsic nonlinear multivariate growth model with autocorrelated errors. The application to a real data set of growing children gave easily interpretable results.
Analysis of multi-source metabolomic data using joint and individual variation explained (JIVE).
2015
Metabolic profiling is increasingly being used for understanding biological processes but there is no single analytical technique that provides a complete quantitative or qualitative profiling of the metabolome. Data fusion (i.e. joint analysis of data from multiple sources) has the potential to circumvent this issue facilitating knowledge discovery and reliable biomarker identification. Another field of application of data fusion is the simultaneous analysis of metabolomic changes through several biofluids or tissues. However, metabolomics typically deals with large datasets, with hundreds to thousands of variables and the identification of shared and individual factors or structures acros…
