Prevention of desiccation is a constant challenge for terrestrial organisms. Land insects have an extracellular coat, the cuticle, that plays a major role in protection against exaggerated water loss. Here, we report that the ABC transporter Oskyddad (Osy)—a human ABCA12 paralog—contributes to the waterproof barrier function of the cuticle in the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster. We show that the reduction or elimination of Osy function provokes rapid desiccation. Osy is also involved in defining the inward barrier against xenobiotics penetration. Consistently, the amounts of cuticular hydrocarbons that are involved in cuticle impermeability decrease markedly when Osy activity is reduced. …

AbstractVariation is essential to species survival and adaptation during evolution. This variation is conferred by the imperfection of biochemical processes, such as mutations and alterations in DNA sequences, and can also be seen within genomes through processes such as the generation of antibodies. Recent sequencing projects have produced multiple versions of the genomes of humans and fruit flies (Drosophila melanogaster). Atypical protein kinase C (aPKC) and Lethal giant larvae (Lgl) regulate apical-basal polarity in Drosophila and mammalian epithelia. At the apical domain, aPKC phosphorylates and displaces Lgl that, in turn, maintains aPKC inactive at the basolateral region. The mutual exclusion of these two proteins seems to be crucial for the correct epithelial structure and function. Organic loading and eutrophy is indicated at profundal depths by large numbers of resting copepodid stages of cyclopoid copepods, by the occurrence of the naidid oligochaete species, Amphichaeta leydigii and Specariajosinae, and the harpacticoid species Canthocamptus staphylinus, and by a low meiobenthos/ macrobenthos biomass ratio. An oligotrophic environment is indicated by the occurrence of the aeolo-somatid oligochaetes Aeolosoma quaternarium, A. hemprichi and Rheomorpha neiswestnovae, the naidid oligochaete Chaetogaster langi and the harpacticoid species Attheyella crassa and a high meiobenthos/ macrobenthos biomass ratio.

Spontaneous and experimentally induced pseudotumor formation in Carausius morosus impairs the midgut tissue homeostasis. Spontaneous pseudotumor formation begins by the break down of a single or a small group of columnar cells (CCs) and is followed by the degeneration of neighboring CCs. There are not only marked similarities but also decisive differences between normal dying CCs in healthy specimens and the degeneration of CCs leading to pseudotumors: in both cases, the apical cell parts with the nucleus are extruded into the midgut lumen, but only during of pseudotumor formation an "amorphous substance" originates from the basal parts of the CCs. Stick insects (Carausius morosus) develop pseudotumors in aging adults. Pseudotumor formation starts at the M2 midgut region where an accumulation of stomatogastric nerve terminals is observed. Pseudotumors arise from dying columnar cells whose basal parts form an “amorphous substance” at the basement membrane whereas the apical parts, including the nucleus, are expelled into the gut lumen. The “amorphous substance” is ensheathed by hemocytes. These nodules, which do not melanize, characterize the phenotype of the pseudotumors. With age, cell death and pseudotumor infestation increases. Herein the synthesis, spectroscopic characterization, two-photon absorption and electrochemical properties of 3,6-disubstituted carbazole tweezers is reported. A dimer resulting from a Glaser homocoupling was isolated during a Sonogashira coupling reaction between a diethynyl-carbazole spacer and a 5-bromo-triarylporphyrin and the properties of this original compound were compared with the 3,6-disubstituted carbazole bisporphyrin tweezers. By increasing their cold tolerance individuals can remain active for longer at the onset of winter and can recover more quickly from a cold shock. In insects, despite many physiological studies, little is known about the genetic basis of cold acclimation.
