The paper analyses the symbolic quality of fire as depicted in one of the short stories collected in The New Jerusalem. The Gothic Chronicie by Borislav Pekić. Referring to the beliefs of the traditional cultures, the writer extensively uses fire’s destroying and purifying attributes. Additionally, there appears in the short story a very important motif of the struggle between the good and the evil, which inscribes itself in the classic literary topos of a Faustian complex.
