The Soldiers of Odin Finland : From a local movement to an international franchise

This chapter analyzes the growth of the Soldier of Odin Finland from a local phenomenon to an international movement, exploring the reasons behind both the success of the SOO, and its later decline in Finland as well as internationally. Additionally, the chapter describes the connections of the SOO with the Finnish extreme right and competition they had with other street patrol organizations. It scrutinizes the rhetoric they use and the ideology they share, and analyzes profiles of SOO leaders in Finland. The chapter is based on data drawn from interviews with Soldiers of Odin and other street patrol groups, police and court files, and online observation. peerReviewed

The paper studies the significance of Martin Heidegger's philosophy of history for two key thinkers of contemporary radical conservatism and the Identitarian movement, Alain de Benoist and Aleksandr Dugin. Heidegger's often-overlooked affinities with the German “conservative revolution” of the Weimar period have in recent years been emphasized by an emerging radical-conservative “right-Heideggerian” orientation. The dissertation is concerned with the speeches of Vihtori Kosola (1884–1936), recruiter of jäger, strike breaker and activist. Kosola assumed the leadership of the Lapua Movement in 1929. His most significant speeches were delivered on the peasants’ march of 7 July 1930 and on the 15th anniversary of the war of independence on 16 May 1933. Kosola was a political speaker and the figurehead of the Patriotic people’s movement (IKL) founded in 1932. The Study focuses on Kosola’s speeches applying rhetorical-semantic concept analysis with regard to the changes occurring in the main concepts. In this article, we examine the discursive practices of (de)stigmatizing right-wing populist party leaders. We draw on a recent example from Finland by examining how the female presidential candidate of a right-wing populist party was portrayed in the Finnish media during the 2018 presidential campaign season. We examine the stigmatization by the press media and the stigma-management tactics used by the presidential candidate to resist stigmatization. Social media has been adopted by radical right populists and alt-right demagogues as a platform for circulating misogynous and racist hate speech and affectively mobilising supporters. This chapter examines hate speech as a form of gendered and racist violence, focusing on social media posts by two influential right-wing populist politicians: Jussi Halla-aho, the leader of the Finns Party, and Donald Trump, the president of the United States. Tämä pro gradu-tutkielma on tapaustutkimus venäläisestä äärioikeistoliikkeestä, joka tunnetaan nimellä DPNI – Laittoman maahanmuuton vastainen liike. Tutkimuksella on kaksi tavoitetta. Ensinnäkin olen pyrkinyt rakentamaan liikkeestä yksityiskohtaista ja syvällistä yleiskuvaa vuodesta 2005 vuoden 2009 kevääseen ulottuvalta ajanjaksolta. Vaikka kyse on yksittäisen liikkeen tutkimisesta, työni rakentaa osaltaan myös esimerkinomaista kuvausta laajemmasta ilmiöstä; rasismin ja äärioikeistolaisuuden esiintymisestä Venäjällä ja niiden kytkeytymisestä identiteettipolitiikkaan.
