Biocontrol of drosophila suzukii by two fatty acids

2020

International audience; Olfaction is a crucial sense for insects to detect food, seek partners or escape dangers. Volatile molecules are mainly perceived through insects' antenna. Odors bind to specific olfactory receptors located in sensilla. Olfactory sensory neurons then synapse on corresponding specific glomeruli of the antennal lobe, the primary olfaction center. This olfactory information is processed in higher centers to trigger a behavioral response. Understanding how odors can influence insect behavior is fundamental in order to protect cultures from pests. In this work, 2 volatile fatty acids are shown to modify significantly Drosophila suzukii courtship and copulation at increasi…

Symptomatic bodies: reading and writing the odor of sanctity in French culture (1868-1901)

2021

Using examples from novels by the Goncourt brothers, Huysmans, Zola and Lemonnier, this paper explores the literary representation of the odor of sanctity in regard to the main epistemological discourses of the second half of the 19th century. In this deeply anticlerical intellectual context, the Christian myth of the odor of sanctity is analyzed by medical professionals and scientists as a pathological phenomenon. Although taking into account the divergent aesthetics of the selected authors, the study focuses mostly on the ambiguity literary texts maintain between the unspeakable experience of religious ecstasy and a symptomatic vision of the body.

Dysfunction of the mesolimbic circuit to food odors in women with anorexia and bulimia nervosa: A fMRI study

2019

Brain reward dysfunction in eating disorders has been widely reported. However, whether the neural correlates of hedonic and motivational experiences related to food cues are differentially affected in anorexia nervosa of restrictive type (ANr), bulimia nervosa (BN), and healthy control (HC) participants remains unknown. Here, 39 women (14 ANr, 13 BN, and 12 HC) underwent fMRI while smelling food or non-food odors in hunger and satiety states during liking and wanting tasks. ANr and BN patients reported less desire to eat odor-cued food and odor-cued high energy-density food (EDF), respectively. ANr patients exhibited lower ventral tegmental area (VTA) activation than BN patients to food od…

Short-term impact of a Western diet on the physiology of the peripheral olfactory system

2016

Current feeding behaviors contribute to the epidemic levels of obesity and diabetes observed in Europe and worldwide. Both the quantity and the quality of ingested food are incriminated. Together with other sensory modalities, olfaction is involved in the control of food intake. Olfactory cues can influence eating behaviors, yet the nutritional status and diet can also alter olfactory abilities. Patients with metabolic disorders present impaired olfactory sensitivity which could in turn worsen their eating behaviors. Here we examined the short-term impact of a Western diet enriched in fat and sugar (High Fat High Sugar, HFHS) on the anatomy and physiology of the olfactory epithelium of postn…

Olfactory and cortical projections to bulbar and hippocampal adult-born neurons

2015

New neurons are continually generated in the subependymal layer of the lateral ventricles and the subgranular zone of dentate gyrus during adulthood. In the subventricular zone, neuroblasts migrate a long distance to the olfactory bulb where they differentiate into granule or periglomerular interneurons. In the hippocampus, neuroblasts migrate a short distance from the subgranular zone to the granule cell layer of the dentate gyrus to become granule neurons. In addition to the short-distance inputs, bulbar interneurons receive long-distance centrifugal afferents from olfactory-recipient structures. Similarly, dentate granule cells receive differential inputs from the medial and lateral ento…

Human neonatal responses to androstenone

2010

Poster P327 session VII: Olfactory Psychophysics & Clinical Studies; Central Olfaction; Aims. Human newborns show equal attraction to the odors of amniotic. fluid (AF) and mothers’ colostrum [1]. As 5-a-androst-16-en-3-. one (An) has been found in both fluids [2, 3], we studied it as a. potential vector of this perinatal odor continuity and of neonatal. attraction to the smell of breast and milk [4]. Methods. Two studies. were run. 1) We recorded the behavior of 16 newborns (3 days) and. 26 adults exposed to a saturating water solution of An and to 3. reference odorants [butyric acid, B; vanilla, V; water, W]. 2) We videotaped. 26 newborns (3 days) being administered 7 stimuli: 4 dilution. …
