impact of dietary intake of n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids on the physiology of the peripheral olfactory system in young mice

2021

Abstract : Olfaction plays a major role in the detection of volatile chemical signals present in the environment and triggers behaviors such as food intake, social interactions or danger avoidance. Recent studies suggested that nutritional and metabolic status of individuals may influence their olfactory capacities. Olfactory disorders have been observed in people with pathologies such as obesity and diabetes as well as in rodents exposed to obesogenic or diabetogenic diets. The physiological mechanisms underlying these dysfunctions are not known. One hypothesis is that a nutritional imbalance in lipids might alter the functioning of the peripheral olfactory system. In this context, the obj…

Computerized delimitation of odorant areas in gas-chromatography-olfactometry by kernel density estimation: Data processing on French white wines

2017

International audience; GC-O using the detection frequency method gives a list of odor events (OEs) where each OE is described by a linear retention index (LRI) and by the aromatic descriptor given by a human assessor. The aim of the experimenter is to gather OEs in a total olfactogram on which he tries to delimit odorant areas (OAs), then to compute each detection frequency. This paper proposes a computerized mathematical method based on kernel density estimation that makes up the total olfactogram as continuous and differentiable function from the OEs LRI only. The corresponding curve looks like a chromatogram, the peaks of which are potential OAs. The limits of an OA are the LRI of the t…

Mise en évidence de transporteurs de la résistance pléiotropique dans la muqueuse olfactive et leur implication dans la réponse aux odorants chez les…

2011

Multidrug resistance (MDR) is a property of various cells associated with the capacity to reject or efflux a wide range of potentially harmful substances out of the cell. Pumps that effect such efflux are membrane proteins and belong to the ATP- binding cassette (ABC) superfamily. Among the members of the ABC family two are conferring MDR, P-glycoprotein (Pgp) and the multidrug resistance-associated protein (MRP1). In this study we investigated the functional activity of MDR transporters in olfactory mucosa of two species, rat and mouse. We used the fluorometric calcein-AM uptake assay on olfactory mucosal slices incubated with specific inhibitors of the MDR-transporters, verapamil and cycl…

Short-term impact of a Western diet on the physiology of the peripheral olfactory system

2016

Current feeding behaviors contribute to the epidemic levels of obesity and diabetes observed in Europe and worldwide. Both the quantity and the quality of ingested food are incriminated. Together with other sensory modalities, olfaction is involved in the control of food intake. Olfactory cues can influence eating behaviors, yet the nutritional status and diet can also alter olfactory abilities. Patients with metabolic disorders present impaired olfactory sensitivity which could in turn worsen their eating behaviors. Here we examined the short-term impact of a Western diet enriched in fat and sugar (High Fat High Sugar, HFHS) on the anatomy and physiology of the olfactory epithelium of postn…
