Gender-Typed Sport Practice, Physical Self-Perceptions, and Performance-Related Emotions in Adolescent Girls
2020
Youth sport experience provides opportunities for physical, personal, and social development in youngsters. Sport is a social system in which socially constructed gender differences and stereotypes are incorporated, and specific sport activities are often perceived as gender characterized. The objective of this study was to examine the relationship between some salient physical and emotional self-perceptions and the type of sport practiced. A sample of 261 female athletes, aged 14–21 years (Mage = 15.59, SD = 2.00), practicing different sports, categorized as feminine (e.g., artistic and rhythmic gymnastics), masculine (e.g., soccer and rugby), or neutral (e.g., track and field and tennis),…
Do the benefits of polyandry scale with outbreeding?
2015
Lay Summary Mating can be both costly and dangerous. Despite this, females of many species typically mate more than once and with different males. We found that female seed bugs only benefit from mating with more than 1 male if one of her mates was a different species. Females needed only 1 mating with her own species to maximize her fitness. Thus, multiple mating may be adaptive in areas where the 2 species coexist.
Frequency-dependent flight activity in the colour polymorphic wood tiger moth
2015
Predators efficiently learn to avoid one type of warning signal rather than several, making colour polymorphisms unexpected. Aposematic wood tiger moth males Parasemia plantaginis have either white or yellow hindwing coloration across Europe. Previous studies indicate that yellow males are better defended from predators, while white males have a positively frequency-dependent mating advantage. However, the potential frequency-dependent behavioural differences in flight between the morphs, as well as the role of male-male interactions in inducing flying activity, have not been previously considered. We ran an outdoor cage experiment where proportions of both male morphs were manipulated to t…

Distribution and projections of nitric oxide synthase neurons in the rodent superior olivary complex.
2000
The superior olivary complex (SOC), a group of interrelated brainstem nuclei, sends efferents to a variety of neuronal structures including the cochlea and the inferior colliculus. The present review describes data obtained from rodents providing evidence that the gaseous, short-living neuroactive substance nitric oxide (NO) is produced in the SOC. The NO-synthesizing enzyme neuronal NO-synthase (nNOS) has been localized by means of several methods including histochemistry and immunohistochemistry. Perikarya containing nNOS were found in several nuclei of the SOC. Their largest numbers and percentages of total cells were observed in the medial nucleus of the trapezoid body. Stained terminal…
Size-selective harvesting fosters adaptations in mating behavior and reproductive allocation, affecting sexual selection in fish
2019
The role of sexual selection in the context of harvest‐induced evolution is poorly understood. However, elevated and trait‐selective harvesting of wild populations may change sexually selected traits, which in turn can affect mate choice and reproduction. We experimentally evaluated the potential for fisheries‐induced evolution of mating behaviour and reproductive allocation in fish. We used an experimental system of zebrafish (Danio rerio) lines exposed to large, small or random (i.e. control) size‐selective mortality. The large‐harvested line represented a treatment simulating the typical case in fisheries where the largest individuals are preferentially harvested. We used a full factoria…
Una cort "ferraresa" a València: els Centelles, Ariosto i un programa de substitució de la tradició literària autòctona
2003
Through a rhyming catalogue of Valencian writers included in his «Segunda parte de Orlando» (Second part of Orlando) (1555) and through other verses in the work, Nicolau Espinosa argues in favour of a cultured literary tradition in a new language, Castilian Spanish. Moreover, the intention to identify the patronage of the dukes of Oliva with that of the dukes of Ferrara, through skilful parallels between Ariosto’s «Orlando» and Espinosa’s composition can be clearly seen.
First report of an olive ridley (Lepidochelys olivacea) inside the Mediterranean Sea
2015
We report the first confirmed occurrence of a Lepidochelys olivacea in the Mediterranean Sea based on the study of an individual stranded on a beach, located in the town of Oropesa del Mar (40º05ʹ32ʺN, 0º08ʹ02ʺE), Castellón province, East Spain, in May 2014. Morphological and genetic analyses were used to confirm the identification of the species. The individual had a sequence that matched the 470 bp Lepidochelys olivacea haplotype F (Genbank accession number: AF051773), found in several Atlantic populations. This becomes one of the northernmost known occurrences of olive ridleys in the world and is the first reports of this species in the Mediterranean Sea.

Condition-dependence of male sexual signalling in the drumming wolf spider Hygrolycosa rubrofasciata
2003
The ´good genes´ or ´handicap´ model of sexual selection focuses on the evolution of female preferences for male sexual traits by using condition-dependence as the mediating mechanism. As the ´size´ of the preferred sexual trait increases, male fit…
