No evidence of systematic pre-emptive loggings after notifying landowners of their lands’ conservation potential
2020
Landowners can intentionally impair biodiversity values occurring on their land to pre-empt biodiversity protection. This often leads to significant negative effects on biodiversity. We studied whether landowners in Finland engaged in pre-emptive loggings after they were notified that their wooded mires are candidate sites for a mire protection program. After the notification, harvesting rates of the candidate wooded mires were significantly lower compared to harvesting rates of similar but non-candidate wooded mires. Annual and monthly harvesting rates indicated that notifying landowners of the conservation potential did not launch systematic pre-emptive logging behavior. Nevertheless, par…
Business owners, employees, and firm performance
2018
The novel Finnish Longitudinal OWNer-Employer-Employee (FLOWN) database was used to analyze how the characteristics of owners and employees relate to firm performance as determined by labor productivity, survival, and employment growth. Focusing on the role of the employment history, the results show that previous experience in a high-productivity firm strongly predicts high productivity and probability of survival for the entrepreneur’s new firm. This can be interpreted as evidence of knowledge spillovers through labor mobility of both the owners and the employees. The results also show that the owner’s high education in a technical field is positively related to firm performance. Differen…
Metsänhoidon mahdollisuudet metsien hiilivarastojen kasvattamiseen ja vaikutukset metsänkasvatuksen kannattavuuteen
2018
Hiilidioksidipitoisuuden kasvu ilmakehässä on tärkein syy antropogeeniseen ilmastonmuutokseen, ja nopeita toimia tarvitaan, jotta maapallon keskilämpötilan nousu saataisiin rajattua 2 °C asteeseen. Hiilidioksidipitoisuuden lisääntyminen johtuu muun muassa fossiilisten polttoaineiden käytöstä ja metsäpinta-alan pienenemisestä. Metsät sitovat kasvaessaan ilmakehän hiiltä itseensä ja toimivat siten hiilinieluina ja -varastoina. Toisaalta metsien hyödyntämisellä raaka-aineena on suuri taloudellinen merkitys Suomessa. Lisääntyvän puunkäytön vuoksi on tärkeää löytää ratkaisuja siihen, miten metsiä voitaisiin edelleen hyödyntää samalla säilyttäen metsien hiilivarasto mahdollisimman suurena. Tässä …

Landowners’ willingness to promote bioenergy production on wasteland − future impact on land use of cutaway peatlands
2017
Landowners are the key players in bioenergy production on wasteland; such as cutaway peatlands. In this study, the landowner's interest to use cutaway peatlands for bioenergy production was investigated using a survey and GIS (Geographic Information Systems) methods in an area in South Ostrobothnia, Finland. The focus was to identify which different bioenergy production chains are preferred by the respondents: combustion, gasification or biogas production from agriculture, energy-willow short-rotation forestry or forestry based energy crops. Also, the influence of personal environmental values on the selection was measured and the future impacts and barriers for the land use were assessed. …

Current agri-environmental policies dismiss varied perceptions and discourses on management of traditional rural biotopes
2017
Abstract Traditional rural biotopes (TRBs) are threatened habitats that host significant biodiversity and several ecosystem services, and depend on active management such as low-intensity grazing. The current study explores private landowners’ decision-making on TRB management and abandonment within a social-ecological system framework. We provide insight into supporting resilience of TRB systems in the face of agricultural modernization. Using a mixed methods approach with content analysis and Q analysis, we demonstrate that TRB management fosters cultural, biological, aesthetic, and utilitarian values. These are reflected in different ways through conservationist’s, profit-oriented farmer…
