Structuring didactic materials on the Web (Struct)
2009
There is an universal agreement that the structuring of didactic materials helps the student in his/her learning process when dealing with such materials. It is then important for the teacher or a student to choose among different structures so to use the one that best conveys the desired knowledge. This need is nowadays a priority also in the e-learning world since several e-learning courses exist on the web and many more are created every day. Unfortunately, most of the existing e-learning platforms offer just a single way to organize the course contents (book structure). Whoever is interested in organizing the course contents in a different way (e.g, with a concept map) must use specific…
Control of a Non-isothermal CSTR by Type-2 Fuzzy Logic Controllers
2009
The paper describes the application of a type-2 fuzzy logic controller (FLC) to a non-isothermal continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR) characterized by the presence of saddle node and Hopf bifurcations. Its performance is compared with a type-1 fuzzy logic controller performance. A full analysis of the uncontrolled CSTR dynamic was carried out and used for the feedback-feedforward fuzzy controllers development. Simulation results confirm the effectiveness and the robustness of the type-2 FLCs which outperform their type-1 counterparts, particularly when uncertainties are present in the system.
Control of a non-isothermal continuous stirred tank reactor by a feedback–feedforward structure using type-2 fuzzy logic controllers
2011
A control system that uses type-2 fuzzy logic controllers (FLC) is proposed for the control of a non-isothermal continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR), where a first order irreversible reaction occurs and that is characterized by the presence of bifurcations. Bifurcations due to parameter variations can bring the reactor to instability or create new working conditions which although stable are unacceptable. An extensive analysis of the uncontrolled CSTR dynamics was carried out and used for the choice of the control configuration and the development of controllers. In addition to a feedback controller, the introduction of a feedforward control loop was required to maintain effective control…
Adaptive Type-2 Fuzzy Logic Control of Non-Linear Processes
2011
The main objective of this study is to provide a valid and effective approach for the design and development of an adaptive type-2 fuzzy controller (AT2FLC), based on the analysis of the nonlinear process dynamics and the use of an ANFIS technique for the optimization of the controller. The performance of the obtained AT2FLC, characterized by a few number of rules, is higher than the performance of a traditional type-2 fuzzy controller with a larger rule base. The proposed controller is particurarly suitable for the control of processes characterized by uncertainty and time varying parameters.
An on-line learning method for face association in personal photo collection
2012
Due to the widespread use of cameras, it is very common to collect thousands of personal photos. A proper organization is needed to make the collection usable and to enable an easy photo retrieval. In this paper, we present a method to organize personal photo collections based on ''who'' is in the picture. Our method consists in detecting the faces in the photo sequence and arranging them in groups corresponding to the probable identities. This problem can be conveniently modeled as a multi-target visual tracking where a set of on-line trained classifiers is used to represent the identity models. In contrast to other works where clustering methods are used, our method relies on a probabilis…
Effective and Efficient Interpolation for Mutual Information based Multimodality Elastic Image Registration
2009
Mutual information (MI) is a popular similarity metric for multimodality image registration purpose. However, it is negatively influenced by artifacts due to interpolation effects. As a result, registration algorithms performance could be affected. In this paper a novel interpolation scheme is presented. It is both effective and efficient. Effective because it limits the presence of local maxima in the mutual information curve, efficient because it is simple to compute being based on simple and optimized distance measures. The method is validated and compared against other techniques both from performance and time complexity persepectives. Differently from other reference works, which perfo…
Development of non-linear nano-structured compounds for the generation of ultrafast impulse dynamics in fiber LASER cavity
2019
My thesis work presented in this doctoral dissertation has started a new research axis within the Carnot Interdisciplinary Laboratory of Burgundy, and is part of the "Information processing devices" program of the Labex ACTION. This research consortium aims to optimize all the steps of an information processing system, using nano-structured materials and non-linear functionalities. In this context, this thesis focuses on the generation of optical signals in the near infrared, with the main objective of hybridizing integrated photonics with fiber laser cavities. These innovative hybrid LASERs offer, by design, many advantages that are particularly sought-after in the field of telecommunicati…
Numerical Calibration of a Simplified Model for FRP Confinement of Columns
2018
This paper presents the calibration of a simplified analytical model for concrete columns confined by fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) jackets. The model allows evaluating the increase of strength, ductility and dissipated energy without defining the lateral confinement pressure and it can be easily extended for the assessment of FRP confinement in design applications. This model was obtained by a simplified procedure based on the best fit of experimental data available in the literature and the coefficient of determination (R2) was evaluated in order to estimate the accuracy of the regression analysis. A numerical database resulting from finite element (FE) analyses was compiled and reported…
Different Pitch Configurations Constrain the Playing Tactics and the Creation of Goal Scoring Opportunities during Small Sided Games in Youth Soccer …
2021
The aim of this study was to explore the tactical effects of different pitch configurations on the collective playing tactics and the creation of goal scoring opportunities (GSO) during small sided soccer games (SSG) in youth players. A total of 22 players performed a 7 vs. 7 + 1 floater (including goalkeepers) under three different pitch configurations (“Standard”, 53 × 38 m
Photometric and spectroscopic variability of the B5IIIe star HD 171219
2017
We analyzed the star HD 171219, one of the relatively bright Be stars observed in the seismo field of the CoRoT satellite, in order to determine its physical and pulsation characteristics. Classical Be stars are main-sequence objects of mainly B-type, whose spectra show, or have shown at some epoch, Balmer lines in emission and an infrared excess. Both characteristics are attributed to an equatorially concentrated circumstellar disk fed by non-periodic mass-loss episodes (outbursts). Be stars often show nonradial pulsation gravity modes and, as more recently discovered, stochastically excited oscillations. Applying the CLEANEST algorithm to the high-cadence and highly photometrically precis…
