Solving a continuous periodic review inventory-location allocation problem in vendor-buyer supply chain under uncertainty

2019

In this work, a mixed-integer binary non-linear two-echelon inventory problem is formulated for a vendor-buyer supply chain network in which lead times are constant and the demands of buyers follow a normal distribution. In this formulation, the problem is a combination of an (r, Q) and periodic review policies based on which an order of size Q is placed by a buyer in each fixed period once his/her on hand inventory reaches the reorder point r in that period. The constraints are the vendors’ warehouse spaces, production restrictions, and total budget. The aim is to find the optimal order quantities of the buyers placed for each vendor in each period alongside the optimal placement of the ve…

A numerical method for imaging of biological microstructures by VHF waves

2014

Imaging techniques give a fundamental support to medical diagnostics during the pathology discovery as well as for the characterization of bio-medical structures. The imaging methods involve electromagnetic waves in a frequency range that spans from some Hz to GHz and over. Most of these methods involve ionizing waves and scanning of a large human body area even if only a focused inspection is needed. In this paper, a numerical method to evaluate the shape of microstructures for application in the medical field, with a very low invasiveness for the human body, is proposed. In particular, the tooth’s root canal is considered. In fact, this is one of the hot topics in the endodontic procedure…

A generalization of the orthogonal regression technique for life cycle inventory

2012

Life cycle assessment (LCA) is a method used to quantify the environmental impacts of a product, process, or service across its whole life cycle. One of the problems occurring when the system at hand involves processes delivering more than one valuable output is the apportionment of resource consumption and environmental burdens in the correct proportion amongst the products. The mathematical formulation of the problem is represented by the solution of an over-determined system of linear equations. The paper describes the application of an iterative algorithm for the implementation of least square regression to solve this over-determined system directly in its rectangular form. The applied …

TOWARD A SOLUTION OF ALLOCATION IN LIFE CYCLE INVENTORIES: THE USE OF LEAST SQUARES TECHNIQUES

2010

Purpose: The matrix method for the solution of the so-called inventory problem in LCA generally determines the inventory vector related to a specific system of processes by solving a system of linear equations. The paper proposes a new approach to deal with systems characterized by a rectangular (and thus non-invertible) coefficients matrix. The approach, based on the application of regression techniques, allows solving the system without using computational expedients such as the allocation procedure. Methods: The regression techniques used in the paper are (besides the ordinary least squares, OLS) total least squares (TLS) and data least squares (DLS). In this paper, the authors present t…

A non-linear Ritz method for progressive failure analysis of variable angle tow composite laminates

2022

A Ritz formulation for non-linear analysis of damage initiation and evolution in variable angle tow composite plates under progressive loading is presented. The model is built on a few key items. It assumes first order shear deformation theory kinematics and non-liner strains in the von Karman sense. The constitutive relationships are formulated in the framework of continuum damage mechanics at the ply level, so that each laminate layer can experience in-plane damage initiation and evolution, then reflected in material softening and loss of local stiffness. A Ritz polynomial expansion of the primary variables and the minimization of the total potential energy provide the discrete solution e…

Constructing transient response probability density of non-linear system through complex fractional moments

2014

Abstract The probability density function for transient response of non-linear stochastic system is investigated through the stochastic averaging and Mellin transform. The stochastic averaging based on the generalized harmonic functions is adopted to reduce the system dimension and derive the one-dimensional Ito stochastic differential equation with respect to amplitude response. To solve the Fokker–Plank–Kolmogorov equation governing the amplitude response probability density, the Mellin transform is first implemented to obtain the differential relation of complex fractional moments. Combining the expansion form of transient probability density with respect to complex fractional moments an…

Time dispersion characterization for UWB mobile radio channels between 3.1 and 10.6 GHz

2007

In this paper, a characterization of the UWB mobile radio channel time dispersion is presented. The results provided were obtained from a measurement campaign carried out in a typical indoor office scenario in the band from 3.1 to 10.6 GHz. Time dispersion metrics as delay spread, coherence bandwidth, delay interval and delay window, in both line-of-sight (LOS) and non-line-of-sight (NLOS) conditions are provided.

two-scale three-dimensional boundary element framework for degradation and failure in polycrystalline materials

2014

A fully three-dimensional two-scale boundary element approach to degradation and failure in polycrystalline materials is proposed. The formulation involves the engineering component level (macroscale) and the material grain scale (micro-scale). The damage-induced local softening at the macroscale is modelled employing an initial stress approach. The microscopic degradation processes are explicitly modelled by associating Representative Volume Elements (RVEs) to relevant points of the macro continuum and employing a three-dimensional grain-boundary formulation to simulate intergranular degradation and failure in the microstructural Voronoi-type morphology through cohesive-frictional contact …

Sul controllo del meccanismo di collasso di controventi eccentrici

2007

The effectiveness of different non-linear static procedures, for the detection of the collapse mechanism of eccentric braced frames, is investigated. EBFs introduced into truss frame structures are considered. For such a typology of structures, plastic deformations are concen-trated in a single resistant element at each floor, greatly increasing the risk of the formation of soft storey mechanisms, even if the structure is designed according to the capacity design. The results of different non-linear static procedures are compared to those obtained by incremental dynamic non-linear analysis, considering a meaningful set of artificially generated stationary accelerograms, compatible with a ta…
