Indications and contraindications of dental implants in medically compromised patients: update.

2013

The aim of this study was to review the current scientific literature in order to analyse the indications and contraindications of dental implants in medically compromised patients. A reference research was carried out on PubMed using the key words “implant” AND (oral OR dental) AND (systemic disease OR medically compromised), in articles published between 1993 and 2013. The inclusion criteria were the following: clinical studies in which, at least, 10 patients were treated, consensus articles, reviewed articles and meta-analysis performed in humans treated with dental implants, and which included the disease diagnosis. A total of 64 articles were found, from which 16 met the inclusion crit…

Rapid prototyping modelling in oral and maxillofacial surgery: a two year retrospective study

2015

Background The use of rapid prototyping (RP) models in medicine to construct bony models is increasing. Material and Methods The aim of the study was to evaluate retrospectively the indication for the use of RP models in oral and maxillofacial surgery at Helsinki University Central Hospital during 2009-2010. Also, the used computed tomography (CT) examination – multislice CT (MSCT) or cone beam CT (CBCT) - method was evaluated. Results In total 114 RP models were fabricated for 102 patients. The mean age of the patients at the time of the production of the model was 50.4 years. The indications for the modelling included malignant lesions (29%), secondary reconstruction (25%), prosthodontic …

Bacterial inactivation/sterilization by argon plasma treatment on contaminated titanium implant surfaces: in vitro study

2015

Background: Surface treatment by argon plasma is widely used as the last step of the manufacturing process of ti- tanium implant fixtures before their sterilization by gamma rays. The possibility of using such a technology in the daily clinical practice is particularly fascinating. The aim of the present study was to assess the effects of the argon plasma treatment on different titanium implant surfaces previously exposed in vitro to bacterial contamination. Material and Methods: Sterile c.p. titanium implant discs with turned (T, Sa: 0.8μm), sandblasted/acid-etched (SAE, Sa: 1.3μm) and titanium plasma sprayed (TPS, Sa: 3.0μm) surface were used in this study. A strain of Ag- gregatibacter a…

Complications following an accidental sodium hypochlorite extrusion: A report of two cases

2012

Sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) is the most commonly used solution in root canal treatments, as it is a low-cost method that displays a very effective antimicrobial activity against microbiota of infected root canals. However, this solution can cause complications especially due to its cytotoxic features. When this solution is injected into the adjacent tissues, the patient usually experiences intense pain, and an urgent treatment should be implemented in order to prevent a long-term sequelae. This paper describes the clinical features of two patients that experienced an accidental extrusion of NaOCl after endodontic treatment of varying severity and with different treatments. Furthermore, it s…

Osteomyelitis affecting mandible in tuberculosis patients

2012

Tuberculosis (TB) is a frequent health problem in developing nations. It has two forms pulmonary and secondary causing other kinds of TB, collectively denoted extra pulmonary tuberculosis. The prevalence of extra pulmonary TB has increased in the last couple of years. Maxillofacial manifestations of tuberculosis form nearly 10% of all extra pulmonary manifestations of the disease. Extra pulmonary TB involving maxillofacial region is our prime concern. Very few cases of TB of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and mandible have been reported in literature. The clinical appearance of TB infection of the TMJ has been described as unspecific, resembling arthritis, osteomyelitis, cancer or any ki…

Estimation of serum lipids in patients with Oral Submucous Fibrosis in India

2014

Objectives: Oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF) is the most prevalent precancerous condition in India. Low levels of lipids serves as a marker and prognostic indicator in the early detection of oral precancerous and cancerous states. In spite of the high prevalence and its potential to undergo malignant transformation, this condition has not widely been investigated with respect to the serum lipid levels. In the present study, an attempt was made to analyze the complete serum lipid profile, total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), high density lipoprotein (HDL) choleste - rol, low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and very low density lipoprotein (VLDL) cholesterol in OSMF and controls. M…

Traumatic arteriovenous fistula as consequence of TMJ arthroscopic surgery. A case report

2016

The ocurrence of a traumatic arteriovenous fistula after arthroscopic surgery of TMJ represents an extremely rare event. Specifically, this uncommon complication has been described only in a few case reports. In this light, the most frequent symptoms showed by this disease are thrills, bruits, pulsatile tinnitus, and an expansible vascular mass. Importantly, the severity of these symptoms is also dependent on the vessels involved. With regard to the management, is important to note that the vessel ligation with surgery as well as vessel emolization with endovascular procedures have been shown to be effective in the treatment of these cases. In view of that, the present study describes a cas…

Papillon Lefevre syndrome: bridge between Dermatologist and Dentist

2010

Papillon-Lefevre syndrome is a rare autosomal recessively inherited condition which shows features common to both dentistry and dermatology. This disease is characterized by palmoplantar hyperkeratosis and severe periodon- titis. Therefore both the dentist and the dermatologist should be aware of the same because an early diagnosis of the syndrome can help to preserve the teeth by early institution of treatment, using a multidisciplinary approach. Here we present a case report of Papillon-Lefevre syndrome, along with a comprehensive review of the etiology, pathology, clinical features, differential diagnosis and management of the condition.

Rhino cerebral mucormycosis: a report of two cases and review of literature.

2011

Mucormycosis is caused by fungi of the order Mucorales and is one of the fulminant and fatal mycotic infections known to human beings with a high mortality rate. Rhinocerebral mucormycosis is the most common type and its extension to the orbit and brain is quite usual. It is commonly reported in immunocompromised patients such as poorly controlled diabetes mellitus, blood dyscrasias, malnutrition, neutropenia, iron overload, organ transplant, and immunosuppressive therapy. Mucormycosis is on the rise with an increase in incidence of Diabetes mellitus and HIV infection leading to immunocompromised status of the patient. Here in, reporting two cases of rhinocerebral mucormycosis in two uncont…

Dental considerations for the patient with diabetes

2011

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is one of the most frequent pathologies that dentists encounter, due to its high prevalence worldwide. It is diagnosed by the repeated obtaining of fasting plasma glucose levels of 126 mg/ dl or higher, or glycosylated hemoglobin of 6’5% or higher. Diabetes (especially if it is not well controlled) brings with it a greater risk of periodontal disease, which is the most frequent complication. On the other hand, the possible influence of periodontal disease on glycemic control is still not well established. Other reported manifestations are xerostomia, sialadenosis and burning mouth syndrome. With regard to dental caries, oral lichen planus and candidosis, recent studie…
