Semi-natural habitats in boreal Europe: a rise of a social-ecological research agenda
2021
The European continent contains substantial areas of semi-natural habitats, mostly grasslands, which are among the most endangered habitats in Europe. Their continued existence depends on some form of human activity, for either production or conservation purposes, or both. We examined the share of semi-natural grasslands within the general grassland areas in boreal Europe. We reviewed research literature across the region to compile evidence on semi-natural grasslands and other semi-natural habitats, such as wooded pastures, in respect to a range of topics such as ecology, land-use change, socioeconomics, and production. We also explored drivers of the research agenda and outlined future re…
Profiles of Nature Exposure and Outdoor Activities Associated With Occupational Well-Being Among Employees.
2018
This research addresses the profiles of nature exposure and outdoor activities in nature among Finnish employees (N = 783). The profiles were formed on the bases of nature exposure at work and the frequency and type of outdoor activities in nature engaged in during leisure time. The profiles were investigated in relation to work engagement and burnout. The latent profile analysis identified a five-class solution as the best model: High exposure (8%), Versatile exposure (22%), Unilateral exposure (38%), Average exposure (13%), and Low exposure (19%). An Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) was conducted for each well-being outcome in order to evaluate how the identified profiles related to occupa…
Critical forms in Sicilian populations of annual Lysimachia L. (Primulaceae)
2018
Based on recent literature, in the Primrose family the genus Lysimachia L. absorbed Anagallis L. (1). As a result, new name combinations have been introduced for this genus, thus involving the increase of specific and intraspecific taxa (for Italian flora see 2 and 3). A further consequence, focused in this contribution, concerns the binomial combination Lysimachia arvensis (L.) U.Manns & Anderb., which has different synonyms and includes several specific and intraspecific taxa. As far as the taxonomic history of the annual taxa of Anagallis is concerned, different authors preferred to include some of them in A. arvensis and in A. foemina at the level of variety (4) or subspecies (2), w…
Anonymiteetin haasteet Bitcoinin käytössä
2019
Tutkielman tavoitteena on selvittää, tarjoaako viimeisen vuosikymmenen aika- na suosioon noussut kryptovaluutta Bitcoin käyttäjilleen anonymiteettiä. Kryptovaluuttojen anonymiteetin tarkasteluun eivät perinteiseen tiedonsiirtoon liitetyt anonymiteetin teoreemat täysin sovellu ja tästä johtuen on muodostettu kryptovaluuttoja koskeva uusi anonymiteetin määritelmä. Tämän uuden määritelmän mukaisesti anonymiteettia tarkastellessa on selvää, että Bitcoin ei oletusarvoisesti tarjoa käyttäjilleen anonymiteettia. Myös vaihtoehtoisia kryptovaluuttoja on Bitcoinin suosion myötä luotu ja useita Bitcoinin sisällä toimivia palveluja on kehitetty anonymiteettiä silmällä pitäen. Tutkielmassa tarkastellaan…

Changes of meaning due to changes of articles: A study of singular count nouns in post-verbal position in Italian
2009
'Essi fecero un muro' vs. 'Essi fecero muro': on the surface, these Italian sentences differ only for the presence of an article before the post-verbal noun (PVN) 'muro', literally 'wall'. Despite this minor divergence, their VPs vary greatly in meaning: the former can be rendered as 'They built a wall', the latter as 'They put up resistance'. In Italian, many other nouns behave as 'muro' does above. The meanings come from distinct structures: PVNs preceded by an article are direct objects. Bare PVNs, at times the very same noun, can either pass tests for direct object-hood or show distinct syntactic ties with the verb.
