Flow Resistance Law in Channels with Flexible Submerged Vegetation

2005

In this paper, experimental data collected in a straight flume having a bed covered by grasslike vegetation have been used to analyze flow resistance for flexible submerged elements. At first, the measurements are used to test the applicability of Kouwen’s method. Then, a calibration of two coefficients appearing in the semilogarithmic flow resistance equation is carried out. Finally, applying the P-theorem and the incomplete self-similarity condition, a flow resistance equation linking the friction factor with the shear Reynolds number, the depth-vegetation height ratio and the inflection degree is deduced.

Effects of irregular two-dimensional and three-dimensional surface roughness in turbulent channel flows

2012

Abstract Wall-resolved Large Eddy Simulation of fully developed turbulent channel flows over two different rough surfaces is performed to investigate on the effects of irregular 2D and 3D roughness on the turbulence. The two geometries are obtained through the superimposition of sinusoidal functions having random amplitudes and different wave lengths. In the 2D configuration the irregular shape in the longitudinal direction is replicated in the transverse one, while in the 3D case the sinusoidal functions are generated both in streamwise and spanwise directions. Both channel walls are roughened in such a way as to obtain surfaces with statistically equivalent roughness height, but different…

One-dimensional Mixed MHD Convection

2006

The parallel, fully developed flow of an electrically conducting fluid between plane parallel walls under the simultaneous influence of a driving pressure head, buoyancy, and magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) forces is studied. The fluid is assumed to be internally heated and the flow is modeled as one-dimensional and incompressible, while the Boussinesq approximation is adopted for the buoyancy terms. Analytical solutions are obtained for temperature, velocity and electrical potential under different electrical boundary conditions, forced to natural convection intensity ratios and values of the magnetic induction. Generalized working charts are presented which synthetically describe the system''s …

Numerical simulation of reciprocating turbulent flow in a plane channel

2009

Direct numerical simulation results were obtained for oscillatory flow with zero time mean (reciprocating flow) in a plane channel using a finite volume method, Crank-Nicolson time stepping and central approximation of the advection terms. A pressure gradient varying co-sinusoidally in time was imposed as the forcing term, and its frequency and amplitude were made to vary so as to span a range of regimes from purely laminar to fully turbulent. For the limiting cases of reciprocating laminar flow and steady-state turbulent flow, numerical results were validated against analytical solutions and classic experimental literature data, respectively. For general reciprocating flows, predictions we…

Numerical observations of turbulence structure modification in channel flow over 2D and 3D rough walls

2015

Abstract The effects of wall roughness on turbulence structure modifications were explored by numerical experiments, carried out using Large Eddy Simulation techniques. The wall geometry was made using an archetypal artificial method, thus to achieve irregular two- and three-dimensional shapes. The proposed roughness shapes are highly irregular and are characterised by high and small peaks, thus it can be considered a practical realistic roughness. Their effects are analysed comparing the turbulence quantities over smooth, 2D and 3D rough walls of fully developed channel flow at relatively low friction Reynolds number Re τ = 395 . Both transitional and fully rough regimes have been investig…

Testing the Stage-Discharge Relationship in Sloping SMBF Flumes

2021

The Samani, Magallanez, Baiamonte, Ferro (SMBF) flume is a simple and inexpensive instrument for indirect discharge measurement that was originally proposed for use in a horizontal channel and then also applied in sloping channels. The contraction of the flow cross section, aimed at establishing a critical flow condition, is simply obtained by applying two half cylinders to the walls of a rectangular cross section. In this paper a theoretical approach previously proposed for a horizontal SMBF flume is first extended to a sloping SMBF flume and a new stage-discharge relationship is deduced. Then, this equation is experimentally tested using laboratory measurements from literature for differe…

Large Eddy Simulations of Rough Turbulent Channel Flows Bounded by Irregular Roughness: Advances Toward a Universal Roughness Correlation

2020

The downward shift of the mean velocity profile in the logarithmic region, known as roughness function, $$\Delta U^+$$ , is the major macroscopic effect of roughness in wall bounded flows. This speed decrease, which is strictly linked to the friction Reynolds number and the geometrical properties which define the roughness pattern such as roughness height, density, shape parameters, has been deeply investigated in the past decades. Among the geometrical parameters, the effective slope (ES) seems to be suitable to estimate the roughness function at fixed friction Reynolds number, Re $$_{\tau }$$ . In the present work, the effects of several geometrical parameters on the roughness function, i…

Laser depassivation of a channel flow double-electrode: A new technique in repassivation studies

1993

Abstract A powerful tool for distinguishing between the different electrochemical steps involved during a depassivation-repassivation sequence was developed by combining the pulsed laser depassivation technique with an hydrodynamic electrochemical method: the channel flow double-electrode (CFDE). This experiment consisted of transporting the chemical species (Fe 2+ ) released by a depassivated iron electrode to a collecting electrode where these species were oxidized. A qualitative idea of the relative contribution of the anodic dissolution to the repassivation behavior was obtained. For a passive iron in acidic solution it was found that about 15% of the total charge is related to anodic d…

Large eddy simulations on the effect of the irregular roughness shape on turbulent channel flows

2019

Abstract Large Eddy Simulations (LES) are carried out to investigate on the mean flow in turbulent channel flows over irregular rough surfaces. Here the attention is focused to selectively investigate on the effect induced by crests or cavities of the roughness. The irregular shape is generated through the super-imposition of sinusoidal functions having random amplitude and four different wave-lengths. The irregular roughness profile is reproduced along the spanwise direction in order to obtain a 2D rough shape. The analysis of the mean velocity profiles shows that roughness crests induce higher effect in the outer-region whereas roughness cavities cause the highest effects in the inner-reg…

Flow Velocity Measurements in Vegetated Channels

2002

Understanding of the hydraulics of flow over vegetation is very important to support the management of fluvial processes. In this paper the flow over flexible bottom vegetation is experimentally studied. A two-dimensional-acoustic doppler velocimeter is used to measure the local flow velocities for different vegetation concentrations, discharges, and flume slopes. The influence of vegetation concentration and the depth/vegetation height ratio on the measured velocity profiles is analyzed. All measured velocity distributions are S-shaped and exhibit a three-zone profile. The relationship between the velocity distribution and the turbulence intensity distribution is also analyzed. The charact…
