Context DataModel Framework: semantic facilities management
2008
Facility management is the practice of coordinating the physical workplace with the people and work of the organisation. It integrates the principles of business administration, architecture and the behavioural and engineering sciences. Software dedicated to facility management are usually limited to spreadsheet software. With the development of the Industry Foundation Class (IFC; a new object-oriented standard to model buildings) and web-based networks, a new generation of methods and tools dedicated to facility management are required. To deal with these requirements, we have developed a framework based on Semantic Web technologies: RDF, Ontology Web Language (OWL), Semantic Web Rule Lang…
Two ways to handle dependent uncertainties in multi-criteria decision problems☆
2009
Abstract We consider multi-criteria group decision-making problems, where the decision makers (DMs) want to identify their most preferred alternative(s) based on uncertain or inaccurate criteria measurements. In many real-life problems the uncertainties may be dependent. In this paper, we focus on multicriteria decision-making (MCDM) problems where the criteria and their uncertainties are computed using a stochastic simulation model. The model is based on decision variables and stochastic parameters with given distributions. The simulation model determines for the criteria a joint probability distribution, which quantifies the uncertainties and their dependencies. We present and compare two…
Party Positions on Differentiated European Integration in the Nordic Countries: Growing Together, Growing Apart?
2020
The Nordic countries constitute an interesting laboratory for the study of differentiated European Integration. Even though Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden share some historical, cultural, socio-economic and political characteristics, all those countries have ultimately opted for a different kind of relationship with the EU. Whereas Finland, a member of the Eurozone since its inception in 1999, has been considered to be part of the Union’s ‘inner core’ for quite some time, Iceland and Norway, in contrast, have opted to remain outside the EU albeit closely associated via the European Economic Area Agreement. The variation of relationships has also been reflected in Nordic parti…
The role of internal resources in the competitive positioning of Sicilian wine cooperatives
2019
The paper is an original article that uses accounting frameworks to determine what creates a competitive advantage in a cooperative business model. In particular, it investigates the influence of tangible, intangible and financial resources on the business performance of cooperatives operating in the Sicilian wine industry, with the RBV of the firms as a theoretical background. Using a linear regression model, our results show that tangible and financial resources are a source of a sustained competitive advantage. This study fills the gap existing in the strategic management literature related to the role of resources, tangible and intangible, in the cooperative system, providing both theor…
Fundamentals on Decision-Making Behavior
2011
This introductory chapter describes the fundamentals for later analysis, modeling and discussion of choice tasks and behavior. Figure 2.1 depicts the basic elements of the choice process which are relevant for the present work. On the left hand side, we see the general problem the decision makers are faced with: the choice task. Generally speaking, a choice task defines the problem of choosing the preferred out of a discrete and finite set of alternatives. The decision makers’ preferences determine what the preferred alternative is. Thus, in Sect. 2.1, we define both choice tasks and preferences.
The Fractal Approach to Secondary Mechanisms in SEC
2007
Abstract Size‐exclusion chromatography (SEC) is one of the most used experimental techniques to characterize polymers in solution; it has been applied to interpret the elution behaviour of many polymer‐solvent systems in five types of column packings. The experimental data have revealed that the classical universal calibration is not accomplished. Deviations from a unique curve are a consequence of two effects: entropic (exclusion by size) and enthalpic (binary and ternary interactions between solvent, polymer, and gel), which results in secondary mechanisms accompanying the main “ideal” SEC separation mechanism. Therefore, three approaches of building a calibration curve have been compared…
Comparative evaluation of the effect of the substrate thickness and inherent process defects on the static and fatigue performance of FSW and adhesiv…
2021
Abstract This work aims at evaluating the mechanical performance of joints in an AA6016 alloy, manufactured by means of two alternative processes: friction stir welding and adhesive bonding. Given its wide use in industrial fields such as automotive and aeronautics, an overlap configuration of joints was selected for the study, and a specific method based on the overlap length evaluation has been developed to allow comparisons among the cases. Two substrate thicknesses are considered in order to vary the overall joint stiffness, and the effect of such geometrical parameter on the mechanical behavior of the joined system is experimentally investigated. The experimental findings highlight tha…

Solid–Liquid Suspensions in Top-Covered Unbaffled Vessels: Influence of Particle Size, Liquid Viscosity, Impeller Size, and Clearance
2014
Particle suspension in liquids is a unit operation commonly encountered in the process industry. Although it is usually carried out in baffled stirred tanks, there are some specific applications where the presence of baffles may be undesirable. In the present work solid-liquid suspensions are investigated in a radially stirred unbaffled tank provided with a top cover. The minimum impeller speed at which all solid particles get suspended (Njs) and the relevant power requirements (Pjs) are assessed. The dependence of these two parameters on physical properties (liquid viscosity, particle concentration, and size) and system geometrical configurations (impeller diameter and clearance) is invest…
Measurements and correlation at different temperatures of liquid–liquid equilibria of 2-butanol or 2-methyl-2-butanol+1,2,3-propanetriol+water ternar…
2014
Abstract In this work, the experimental liquid–liquid equilibria (LLE) data of 2-methyl-2-butanol + 1,2,3-propanetriol (glycerol) + water and 2-butanol + 1,2,3-propanetriol (glycerol) + water systems at different temperatures are presented. The LLE of the systems has been measured between 283 and 323 K. The NRTL and UNIQUAC models were applied to the ternary systems. The interaction parameters obtained from both models successfully correlated the equilibrium compositions. The experimental tie lines were compared to the values predicted by the UNIFAC method. Finally, the solvent capability of both alcohols was checked in order to separate the mixture formed by glycerol and water.
