Nosocomial infections and antimicrobial resistance (AR) are highly important problems that impact the morbidity and mortality of hospitalized patients as well as their cost of care. The goal of this paper is to demonstrate our analysis of AR by applying a number of various data mining (DM) techniques to real hospital data. The data for the analysis includes instances of sensitivity of nosocomial infections to antibiotics collected in a hospital over three years 2002-2004. The results of our study show that DM makes it easy for experts to inspect patterns that might otherwise be missed by usual (manual) infection control. Given the broad scope and intersectoral nature of public health structures and practices, there are inherent difficulties in defining which services fall under the public health remit and in assessing their capacity and performance. The aim of this study is to analyze how public health functions and practice have been defined and operationalized in different countries and regions around the world, with a specific focus on assessment tools that have been developed to evaluate the performance of essential public health functions, services, and operations. Six operational definitions of the concept of major depression were submitted to empirical evaluation in 600 psychiatric inpatients. Special attention was given to the comparison of major depression in DSM-III-R and ICD-10. The data base created by a polydiagnostic interview revealed relevant classificatory differences between the six definitions under study. Modification of the Mustard operation for surgical treatment of complete transposition by creating a confluence of the caval veins

SummaryIn this review, I describe our modification of the Mustard operation for hemodynamic correction of complete transposition which, in principle, consists of intraatrial construction of a caval venous confluence. A new design of the intraatrial baffle has been developed using Gore-Tex. Fewer complications have been encountered with this method when compared to other techniques of atrial redirection. The Mustard procedure, therefore, will retain a future role when anatomic abnormalities, or other circumstances, preclude anatomic correction at the arterial level.
