TCTAP A-059 Intrahospital and Long-term Outcomes After True Bifurcation Stenting

2019

Bifurcation percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) is challenging and is associated with lower rate of procedural success and higher risk of complications. The aim of this study was to evaluate intrahospital and long-term outcomes of patients who underwent PCI for bifurcation lesions involving

Circumferential graft for elbow instability

2019

For those patients with instability of the medial and lateral sided of the elbow, there is a place for a circumferential graft. This has the main advantage of simplifying the bone tunnel creation and graft fixation, compared to having both medial- and lateral-sided reconstructions.

Pre-Operative Modeling of Transcatheter Mitral Valve Replacement in a Surgical Heart Valve Bioprosthesis

2020

Obstruction of the left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT) is a common complication of transcatheter mitral valve replacement (TMVR). This procedure can determine an elongation of an LVOT (namely, the neo-LVOT), ultimately portending hemodynamic impairment and patient death. This study aimed to understand the biomechanical implications of LVOT obstruction in a patient who underwent TMVR using a transcatheter heart valve (THV) to repair a failed bioprosthetic heart valve. We first reconstructed the heart anatomy and the bioprosthetic heart valve to virtually implant a computer-aided-design (CAD) model of THV and evaluate the neo-LVOT area. A numerical simulation of THV deployment was then deve…

Role of  1-Adrenoceptor Subtypes in Pupil Dilation Studied With Gene-Targeted Mice

2014

PURPOSE The α₁A-adrenoceptor (α₁A-AR) subtype was suggested to mediate contraction and trophic effects in the iris dilator muscle, and thus its pharmacological blockade may be involved in intraoperative floppy iris syndrome. We tested the hypothesis that the α₁A-AR mediates pupil dilation and trophic effects in the mouse iris. METHODS The α₁-AR subtype mRNA expression was quantified in iris tissue by real-time PCR. To assess the role of individual α₁-ARs for mediating pupil dilation, the α₁-AR agonist phenylephrine was topically applied to the ocular surface of mice deficient in one of the three α₁-AR subtypes (α₁A-AR(-/-), α₁B-AR(-/-), α₁D-AR(-/-), respectively) and wild-type controls. Cha…

Assessment of the association between cytomegalovirus DNAemia and subsequent acute graft-versus-host disease in allogeneic peripheral blood stem cell…

2021

The potential role of active CMV infection in promoting acute Graft-versus-Host Disease (aGvHD) in allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT) remains a matter of debate. We further addressed this issue conducting a retrospective, observational, multicenter study of 632 patients subjected to allogeneic peripheral blood HSCT at 20 Spanish centers. Monitoring of CMV DNA load in plasma or whole blood was performed by real-time PCR assays. Cumulative incidence of CMV DNAemia was 48.9% (95% CI, 45%-52.9%), of any grade aGvHD, 45.6; 95% (CI, 41.3%-50.1%), and of grade II-IV aGvHD, 30.7 (95% CI, 24.9%-36.4%). Overall, development of CMV DNAemia at any level resulted in an increa…

Segmental sandwich osteotomy of the posterior mandible in pre-implant surgery - A systematic review

2017

Background The rehabilitation of the atrophic posterior mandible with dental implants often requires bone augmentation procedures. The aim of the present study is the systematic review of the literature concerning the success rate of Segmental Sandwich Osteotomy (SSO) of the posterior mandible in pre-implant surgery. Material and Methods Systematic review of all clinical cases and clinical studies of SSO of the posterior mandible in pre-implant surgery with a minimum follow-up of 6 months after implant loading was performed, based on specific inclusion and exclusion criteria. The search strategy involved searching the electronic databases of MEDLINE, EMBASE, COCHRANE LIBRARY, Clinical Trial…

Host-Derived CD8+ Dendritic Cells Protect Against Acute Graft-versus-Host Disease after Experimental Allogeneic Bone Marrow Transplantation

2014

Graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) is a frequent life-threatening complication after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) and induced by donor-derived T cells that become activated by host antigen-presenting cells. To address the relevance of host dendritic cell (DC) populations in this disease, we used mouse strains deficient in CD11c(+) or CD8α(+) DC populations in a model of acute GVHD where bone marrow and T cells from BALB/c donors were transplanted into C57BL/6 hosts. Surprisingly, a strong increase in GVHD-related mortality was observed in the absence of CD11c(+) cells. Likewise, Batf3-deficient (Batf3(-/-)) mice that lack CD8α(+) DCs also displayed a strongly incr…

Long term complications following pelvic and para-aortic lymphadenectomy for endometrial cancer, incidence and potential risk factors: a single insti…

2019

ObjectiveTo determine the incidence of long term lymphadenectomy complications in primary surgery for endometrial cancer and to elucidate risk factors for these complications.MethodsA retrospective chart review was carried out for all patients with endometrial cancer managed at Parma University Hospital Unit of Gynecology and Obstetrics between 2010 and 2016. Inclusion criteria were surgical procedure including hysterectomy and lymphadenectomy (pelvic or pelvic and aortic). We identified patients with postoperative lymphocele and lower extremity lymphedema. Logistic regression analysis was used to identify predictive factors for postoperative complications.ResultsOf the 249 patients tested,…

Teaching the placement of posterior resin-based composite restorations in Spanish dental schools

2012

Objectives: In an area of esthetic dentistry such as posterior composites, in which new materials and techniques are being devolved continuously, it is important to confirm that dental students have a clear understanding of the basic principles of clinical application of this knowledge. Considering that the preparation of dental graduates in Spain may be of interest to competent dental authorities and employers with whom they can work worldwide, this study investigated the teaching of posterior composite restorations in Spanish dental schools. Study design: In late 2009/ early 2010, a questionnaire seeking information on the teaching of posterior composites was emailed to the professor resp…

Evaluation of the Oxiris Membrane in Cardiogenic Shock Requiring Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation Support: Study Protocol for a Single Center, Sin…

2021

Background: Veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA-ECMO) is the rescue treatment proposed to patients with refractory cardiogenic shock. The VA-ECMO implantation promotes inflammation and ischemia-reperfusion injuries through the VA-ECMO flow, causing digestive mucosa barrier disrupture and inducing translocation of bacterial wall components—Lipopolysaccharides (LPS) with further inflammation and circulatory impairment. LPS is a well-studied surrogate indicator of bacterial translocation. Oxiris membrane is a promising and well-tolerated device that can specifically remove LPS. The main study aim is to compare the LPS elimination capacity of Oxiris membrane vs. a non-absorban…
