Life skills education : teachers' perceptions in primary school classrooms in Finland and Singapore
2018
This research paints a picture of how life skills education could look like as part of the curriculum in every day school life in primary schools in Finland in Singapore through the lens of teachers. Life skills education is discussed with reference to formal structures as set by the curriculum and also through informal approaches by teachers. Previous literature on life skills was considered in arriving at the main components of life skills to be used in this study. A total of six teachers participated in the study. Three were from Finland and the other three were from Singapore. The teachers have different personal and professional training background as well as number of years of experie…
Investigation of University Students’ Perceptions of Their Educators as Role Models and Designers of Digitalized Curricula
2020
Higher education graduates need 21st-century skills, both learning skills and competences for working with technology. However, research indicates an insufficient integration of ICTs into teaching and learning. In this paper, we examine students’ perception of various technology-based issues: (a) ICT integration within a Slovenian university’s learning environment, (b) teachers as role models for ICT use, and (c) the processes of collaboration and creativity as integrative parts featured in learning technologies. We studied beliefs about the contribution of ICT use to teaching and learning as the primary factors influencing ICT integration. A one-way ANOVA revealed that students in teacher …
Development of reading and arithmetic skills across Grades 1 to 4 in two groups of children receiving part-time special education
2021
This study investigated why some Finnish students receive part-time special education in Grade 1, duration of that support, and its relation to student reading fluency, reading comprehension, and arithmetic fluency development. The participants included two groups from Grade 1 receiving part-time special education (1–2 years vs. 3–4 years) and a control group comprising the remaining participants from the study. Teachers identified reading and expressive language difficulties as the main reasons for part-time special education in Grade 1. By Grade 4, students who received support until Grade 1 or 2 caught up the level of the control group especially in reading fluency. Students who had rece…
A Validation Study of Classroom Assessment Scoring System–Secondary in the Finnish School Context
2017
This study examined the reliability and validity of the Classroom Assessment Scoring System–Secondary (CLASS-S) in Finnish classrooms. Trained observers coded classroom interactions based on video recordings of 46 Grade 6 classrooms (450 cycles). Concurrent associations were investigated with respect to teacher self-ratings (e.g., efficacy beliefs and teaching-related stress). Confirmatory factor analysis showed that the hypothesized three-factor structure of the original CLASS-S (Emotional Support, Organizational Support, and Instructional Support), with some modifications, provided a better fit for the data compared with one- and two-factor structures. Structural validity was demonstrate…
The Literary Construction of Journalism Education: A Review of the Course Literature in the Nordic Academic Journalism Programmes
2019
This article investigates the course literature in the curricula of 12 major journalism schools at Northern European universities. This analysis of the course literature listed in documentation of bachelor programmes traces how journalism education institutions constitute their knowledge base on journalism. It is found that Nordic journalism students are required to read almost four books per study credit on average. Undergraduate academic journalism programmes are professionally oriented, and professional literature by non-scientific publishers occupies a major place in the course literature. A strong emphasis is placed on professional books written in the domestic language, with an averag…
Comparing technology acceptance of K‐12 teachers with and without prior experience of learning management systems : A Covid‐19 pandemic study
2021
Covid-19 pandemic has caused a massive transformation in K-12 settings towards online education. It is important to explore the factors that facilitate online teaching technology adoption of teachers during the pandemic. The aim of this study was to compare Learning Management System (LMS) acceptance of Finnish K-12 teachers who have been using a specific LMS as part of their regular teaching before the Covid-19 pandemic (experienced group) and teachers who started using it for emergency remote teaching during the pandemic (inexperienced group). Based on the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology framework, a self-report questionnaire was administered to 196 teachers (nexperienc…
Intended Learning Outcomes of Seven Finnish B.Sc. in IT Programs
2021
Defining the intended learning outcomes is a significant part of curriculum design. Especially, the program-level competence requirements outline the objectives of the education, align the more detailed program structures and content of the curriculum, and create the basis for constructive alignment. Several different bodies aim at defining the goals of engineering programs on different levelsof abstraction. Some of these documents can be considered as statements of the 'minimum threshold'.Respectively, others provide detailed guidelines to support the design of post-secondary programsin specific engineering fields. For example, the CDIO Initiative has defined a general reference syllabus aim…
ASR in Classroom Today : Automatic Visualization of Conceptual Network in Science Classrooms
2017
Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) field has improved substantially in the last years. We are in a point never saw before, where we can apply such algorithms in non-ideal conditions such as real classrooms. In these scenarios it is still not possible to reach perfect recognition rates, however we can already take advantage of these improvements. This paper shows preliminary results using ASR in Chilean and Finnish middle and high school to automatically provide teachers a visualization of the structure of concepts present in their discourse in science classrooms. These visualizations are conceptual networks that relate key concepts used by the teacher. This is an interesting tool that gives…
