Cleaning mums and brave policemen: gender representation and gender-inclusive language in EFL teaching materials in Lithuania

2019

Socialinės lyties kalbinės raiškos ir įvaizdžio kūrimo aspektai anglų kalbos (kaip svetimosios ar antrosios) vadovėliuose yra sulaukę nemažai tyrėjų dėmesio, tačiau lyties raiška Lietuvoje leistuose anglų kalbos vadovėliuose iki šiol analizuota sporadiškai (Brusokaitė, Verikaitė-Gaigalienė 2015), o tyrimų, skirtų ne vadovėliams, bet kitoms mokymo priemonėms, iki šiol beveik neatlikta. Šiame straipsnyje kiekybiniu (pasitelkiant tekstynų analizės įrankius) ir kokybiniu (remiantis turinio analize) būdu analizuojamos socialinės lyties vaizdavimo tendencijos keturiose – dviejose pratybų ir dviejose testų – anglų kalbos (kaip svetimosios) mokymo priemonėse, išleistose 2005–2017 m. Lietuvoje. Remi…

Scientific opinion on an application by Dow AgroSciences LLC (EFSA-GMO-NL-2012-106) for the placing on the market of genetically modified herbicide-t…

2017

Abstract Soybean DAS‐44406‐6 expresses 5‐enolpyruvyl‐shikimate‐3‐phosphate synthase (2mEPSPS), conferring tolerance to glyphosate‐based herbicides, aryloxyalkanoate dioxygenase (AAD‐12), conferring tolerance to 2,4‐dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4‐D) and other related phenoxy herbicides, and phosphinothricin acetyl transferase (PAT), conferring tolerance to glufosinate ammonium‐based herbicides. The molecular characterisation data and bioinformatics analyses did not identify issues requiring assessment for food/feed safety. The agronomic and phenotypic characteristics revealed no relevant differences between soybean DAS‐44406‐6 and its conventional counterpart, except for pod count, seed cou…

Tradycyjny instytucjonalizm i jego znaczenie dla nauk politycznych

2015

The paper presents academic achievements of traditional institutionalism, the first scientific approach in political science, which was developed since the second part of the 19th century in USA, Great Britain, Germany and France. The author argues that this orientation had a creative influence on the progress of the discipline, however this impact is not appreciated by contemporary studies in the field of political science and political theory where limited understanding of the old institutionalism is promoted. The revision of this state of affairs has shown that, apart from the analysis of formal structures and institutions of state power, the traditionalists also have studied political p…

Sociopolitical and Cultural Correlates of Internalized Homonegativity in Gay and Bisexual Men: Findings from a Global Study

2016

This is an Accepted Manuscript of an article published by Taylor & Francis in International Journal of Sexual Health on 15 November 2016, available online: http://www.tandfonline.com/10.1080/19317611.2016.1247125. Objectives: Based on the premise that internalized homonegativity (IH) is a product of the incorporation of environmental heterosexism, the authors examined the influence of sociopolitical and individual influences on IH. Methods: The cross-sectional study consisted of 109,382 gay and bisexual men across 77 countries. Results: Variables at the (European) country-level that were associated with higher levels of IH included lack of laws recognizing same-sex relationships and perceiv…

Persuasion in journalistic sub-genres of opinion : interpersonal metadiscusive uses in English and Spanish

2011

Análisis metadiscursivo interpersonal en sub-géneros de opinión en inglés y español en artículos de economía. Journalistic genres share a common communicative objective: to inform and entertain readers through persuasion, this being a major function that pervades most journalistic texts. Therefore, their interpersonal metadiscourse should, forecastedly, contain a number of linguistic devices that comply this function, although sub-genres of opinion in English and Spanish may presumably present quantitative and qualitative differences, since metadiscourse is usually not only constrained by generic features but also by sociolinguistic habits changing from one language to another (Suau-Jiménez…

Ocena działalności Trybunału Konstytucyjnego

2019

Macrophage: SHIP of Immunity

2014

Immunology. Why does it exist? Two words. Cure disease. People get diseases. “Test tubes” do not. People fund immunologists for solutions to their health problems. But, immunologists often study leukocytes in test tubes – the laboratory – away from diseases. Why? Because much can be learned from analyzing cellular biochemistry and behaviors in vitro that cannot be ascertained when leukocytes are in animals. At the same time, isolated leukocyte reactions often do not reflect how the immune system operates as a unit. So, it is critical to verify in vitro observations in vivo. Among leukocytes, macrophages are the central initiating and directing element in immune systems, and serve this role …

From research question to dissemination: how to design, analyse and present study results

2018

Today, the term “study” is very frequently used in quite a broad sense: survey, clinical trial, analysis, research and other terms with deeply different meanings are often generally indicated as “studies”. A “study” can be generally defined as a process composed of several actions aimed to verify one or more hypotheses (objectives), with the ultimate goal of sharing the answers (results) with a target audience, in the form of a scientific paper, presentation or poster.

Stridor in children

2018

A 16-month-old boy was referred to the emergency department of the Children's Clinical University Hospital (Riga, Latvia) due to cough and noisy breathing for 3 months. The complaints seemed to have worsened over time with coughing fits 2–4 days a week and the boy not being able to tolerate solid food (leading to vomiting) during the fits. In between the bouts, he felt fine. Diminished food intake was noted over the last month. Over the 3-month period, no other symptoms were noted. The father of the child was fixated on a diagnosis of asthma and categorically denied the possibility of any choking attacks after eating or playing with small objects. The boy had been seen by pulmonologist once…
