Words, clauses, sentences, and T-units in learner language: Precise and objective units of measure?

2020

In research on learner language complexity, accuracy and fluency (CAF), syntactic complexity is often studied with quantitative measures based on words, clauses, sentences, and T-units. The findings have been mixed, but segmenting learner language into these units of measure has seldom been problematised, even if the need for accurate coding is well known. The present study explores words, clauses, sentences, and T-units as production units in written learner language using a corpus of 352 L2 Finnish texts (28,813 words). The results illustrate how written learner language can be hard to fit into the production unit categories, which are essential for the most frequently used quantitative m…

The roles of linguistic confidence and integrative motivation on cross-cultural adaptation of Asian degree students Finland

2015

While cross-cultural adaptation of international students has become more and more popular topics in the field of intercultural communication, there are few studies related to students who come to non-native-English-speaking countries to study international programs. Specifically, the number of Asian students enrolling in international degree programs in Finland has been increasing recently. Besides other difficulties, language has become one of the most baffling issues in the process of both sociocultural adaptation and psychological adaptation of strangers in the host country (Maza, 1963). By narrowing the impacts of integrative motivation and linguistic confidence, they have drawn some r…

Current L2 self-concept of Finnish comprehensive school students : The role of grades, parents, peers, and society

2021

L2 (second/foreign language) motivation research in Finland has been scarce. Furthermore, international motivational research has focused more on ideal and ought-to selves, leaving the current L2 self-concept in the background. In the present study, we attempted to address this gap, exploring what shapes L1 (mother tongue) Finnish students' understanding of themselves as users and learners of L2s. Using structural equation modelling, we studied the relationships between students' (n = 1206) current L2 self-concept and parental encouragement, peer pressure, societal expectations, and grades. We further studied which of these factors are the best predictors of students' current L2 self-concep…

Influencing through language : university students' argumentation strategies

2009

This article investigates university students’ argumentation skills in their efforts to infl uence fellow students through language. The project was implemented at the University of Kuopio and the subjects, both Finnish and foreign university students, spoke English as a lingua franca. The students were required to argue in roles either ‘for’ or ‘against’ in videotaped debates. The aim was to determine how well they managed and what problems arose. In this demanding speech situation the students applied collaborative strategy, repetition, rephrasing and topic negotiation. Problems were caused mainly by the diffi cult topics and unknown terminology. However, there was a strong sense of commi…

Yrittävätkö he itse puhua ruotsia harjoittelujaksojen aikana? Mitkä tekijät vaikuttavat niin, että suomenkieliset opiskelijat yrittävät ilmaista itseään toisella kotimaisella kielellä? Mutta yhtä tärkeää on saada tietää, kuinka opiskelijat kokevat ruotsin kurssinsa ammattikorkeakoulussa. Auttaako ammattikorkeakoulun ruotsinopetus heitä todellisessa elämässä? Millainen ruotsin…

Stories of professional development in physiotherapy education

2022

This study examines graduating physiotherapy students’ narratives related to their professional development. The data comprised interviews with 33 graduating physiotherapy students. The data were analyzed using the narrative analysis approach. As a result, five different story models were identified. The descriptive story models were named: 1) “Study path dominated by life changes”; 2) “Realizing the connection between physiotherapy theory and practice”; 3) “Self-regulated and practical-oriented learning path”; 4) “Becoming a critical developer”; and 5) “Multiprofessional working towards expertise”. In students’ stories, there appeared different turning points that illustrated especially me…
