Linguistic, Contextual, and Experiential Equivalence Issues in the Adaptation of a Performance-Based Assessment of Generic Skills in Higher Education

This qualitative study investigated the various linguistic, contextual, and experiential equivalence issues embedded in a performance-based instrument aimed at assessing generic skills in higher education. A rigorous translation and adaptation process (American English to Finnish) was conducted on one instrument, namely Collegiate Learning Assessment (CLA+) International. The data were obtained from cognitive laboratories (n = 13), with think-alouds and follow-up interviews conducted among Finnish undergraduate students. Project-Based Education Research Course Supports Exchange-students’ Research Minded Teacher Identity

Project-based education (PBE) gives possibilities for students to work together and feeling of belonging in a community even during distance learning. At the Department of Chemistry, University of Jyväskylä (JYU), a group of exchange students participated in a PBE chemistry teacher education research course online. The goal of the course was to enforce the connection between research on science teaching and acting sustainable in society. This study is based on semi-structured online group interview of the students after this PBE course. Evaluation of Student Teachers’ Perceived Quantitative Workload and Usefulness of an On-line Elementary Science Education Course Unit

We have designed a 1 ECTS on-line science pedagogy unit as a part of a 6 ECTS science education course for elementary school student teachers. To improve the unit, we asked 169 participants to estimate their use of time and the usefulness of the themes and contents in it. We analysed the responses in the framework of students’ perceived workload. The Basics of School Science was perceived as the most useful section, followed by Science Teaching and Learning Methods and Basics of Science and Scientific Knowledge in Schools, respectively. Tutkimuksessa selvitettiin opetusharjoitteluvuoden aikaista kemian aineenopettajaopiskelijoiden välistä vuorovaikutusta ja opettajaidentiteetin rakentumista sekä näihin liittyviä harjoittelijoiden kokemia ongelmia. Tutkimuksessa tarkasteltiin vuoden 2014–2015 sekä 2015–2016 Jyväskylän yliopistossa kemian pedagogisiin aineopintoihin osallistuvia aineenopettajaopiskelijoita. Tutkimus toteutettiin kyselylomakkeella keväällä 2016. Tutkimuksessa havaittiin kemian aineenopettajaopiskelijoiden pitävän hyviä vuorovaikutustaitoja perusedellytyksenä opettajan työssä. Perceived status and value

This article examines how students in a multidisciplinary project-based learning course involving real customers perceive their interactions with their customers. The authors conducted a qualitative study and analysed students’ learning reports by means of a thematic network analysis. The analysis shows how students perceive their status in relation to their customers and how their perceptions of their work affect how they see the value of the projects.
