Osana yhteispohjoismaista hanketta Gender and Philosophy tein tutkimuksen, jonka virittäjänä oli naisten alhainen osuus filosofian opiskelijoista, tutkijoista ja yliopistotason opetushenkilökunnasta. Tavoitteena oli selvittää, minkälaisin pedagogisin keinoin olisi mahdollista edistää naisten integroitumista filosofiaan. Koska tämä kuitenkin edellyttää jonkinlaista ymmärrystä myös ilmiön syistä, päädyin analysoimaan naisopiskelijoiden tilanteen eri puolia ja tekemään jonkin verran empiiristä taustatutkimusta, joissa vastaajina ja haastateltavina oli sekä naisiksi että miehiksi itsensä identifioivia opiskelijoita ja jo alalle valmistuneita. The purpose of this study is to describe the genre of an expository history essay. The data consist of 52 document-based essays that were written as a part of a history exam at a Finnish general upper secondary school. In this article, I analyse the functional structure of these essays using genre-theoretical move-analysis in a framework of genre theories and disciplinary literacies. Three different moves and six steps were found. The communicative functions of these structural elements were to contextualize the historical content of the essays, to analyse historical documents, and to use the analysis for supporting the chosen argument. Ethical issues in the teaching and learning of health topics in schools: the conceptions of teacher trainees

There has been little research on how teacher trainees can be educated to deal with ethical issues, or on trainees' conceptions of these issues. Using written essays, this study aimed to examine health education teacher trainees' (N = 35) conceptions of the ethical aspects involved in teaching and learning health topics. A qualitative content analysis revealed three broad themes: health education as an ethical subject, the teacher as an ethical professional, and spaces for learning. The results reflect the content areas focused on in health education teacher training, and provide new insights into topics that can be useful in developing teacher training. peerReviewed

Exploring early adolescents’ evaluation of academic and commercial online resources related to health

This study assessed the ability of 426 students (ages 12–13) to critically evaluate two types of online locations on health issues: an academic resource and a commercial resource. The results indicated limited evaluation abilities, especially for the commercial resource, and only a small, partial association with prior stance and offline reading ability. Only about half (51.4%) of the students questioned the credibility of the commercial online resource and only about 19% of the students showed an ability to fully recognize commercial bias.
