Polarization Insensitive Wavelength Conversion in a Low-Birefringence SiGe Waveguide

We report the first demonstration of a single-pass dual-orthogonal-pump four-wave mixing-based wavelength conversion scheme in a silicon-based waveguide. The silicon germanium waveguide used was designed to exhibit strong TE/TM mode similarity across a broad wavelength range as well as a large nonlinear coefficient. A polarization-dependent loss of just 0.42 dB was measured, and the conversion of 40-Gb/s differential phase-shift keying signals was demonstrated with 1.5-dB power penalty at a bit error ratio of $10^{-9}$ .
PSA-based phase regeneration of DPSK signals in a silicon germanium waveguide

We demonstrate a polarization-assisted PSA-based phase regenerator in a passive low-birefringence SiGe waveguide at low CW pump power. A PSER of 28.6-dB enables a six-fold reduction in phase-error and BER improvement of approximately 2-dB in the regenerated signal.
Relationship between vegetation microwave optical depth and cross-polarized backscatter from multiyear Aquarius observations

Soil moisture retrieval algorithms based on passive microwave remote sensing observations need to account for vegetation attenuation and emission, which is generally parameterized as vegetation optical depth (VOD). This multisensor study tests a new method to retrieve VOD from cross-polarized radar backscattering coefficients. Three years of Aquarius/SAC-D data were used to establish a relationship between the cross-polarized backscattering coefficient σ HV and VOD derived from a multitemporal passive dual-channel algorithm (VODMT). Synthetic aperture microscopy using off-axis illumination and polarization coding

A new method to improve the resolution of optical imaging systems beyond the classical Rayleigh resolution limit is presented. The technique relies on synthetic aperture generation in three stages. The first one (encoding stage) uses an illumination procedure that combines both on-axis and off-axis illumination beams with different polarization states onto the object. After the imaging system, a second stage (decoding stage) allows the recovering of the encoded spatial-frequency object information by means of an interferometric configuration based on the polarization coding carried out in the previous stage. Passive microwave remote sensing observations at L-band provide key and global information on surface soil moisture (SM) and vegetation optical depth (VOD), which are related to the Earth water and carbon cycles. Only two spaceborne L-band sensors are currently operating: SMOS, launched end of 2009 and thus providing now a 11-year global dataset and SMAP, launched beginning of 2015. Periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) is currently used for frequency conversions using quasi-phase-matching, thanks to its high nonlinear coefficients and mature poling process. PPLN can also be attractive for electro-optic (EO) applications. Several studies have been conducted on PPLN-based EO deflectors, and recent realizations have lower the required applied voltage under hundred volts [1]. Indeed, for practical EO applications drive voltages as low as 5 V are usually required.
