A highly polarized target for the electron beam at MAMI

2009

Abstract Polarized He 3 from metastability exchange optical pumping (MEOP) is used as an effective polarized neutron target for electron scattering experiments at the MAinz MIcrotron (MAMI). With the present setup an initial polarization of up to 72% has been obtained at the experimental area. A novel calibration technique will be presented which allows the determination of the absolute polarization within a relative uncertainty of 3%.

Generation and detection of optical rogue-wave-like fluctuations in fiber Raman amplifiers

2009

Rogue wave-like statistics is reported in a fiber Raman amplifier. The pump-signal noise transfer leads to the development of large peak-power fluctuations following a powerlaw probability distribution. Discrimination of the rarest events is demonstrated.

OPCPA using beams shaped by diffractive optical elements

2011

Optical parametric chirped pulse amplification (OPCPA) is becoming a widely accepted technique for the generation of high energy ultrashort laser pulses. Flat-top spatial profile pump beams can improve the efficiency of OPCPA, however such beams can be energetically costly to generate and are difficult to implement for low pump energy systems. An elegant and efficient solution to the generation of flat-top spatial profiles is the use of a diffractive optical element (DOE), however these devices distort the geometric phase of the pulses, possibly making them unsuitable for phase coherent interactions such as OPCPA.

Nuclear ground state properties of 99Sr by collinear laser spectroscopy with non-optical detection

1991

Abstract Collinear fast-beam laser spectroscopy, with improved sensitivity for ions with hyperfine split transitions, is performed to measure the hyperfine structure and the isotope shift of the well deformed short-lived 99Sr. The new method consists in ground state depopulation by a two-step optical pumping sequence prior to state selective neutralization and fast-atom counting. A definitive nuclear spin value I = 3 2 , the change in mean square charge radius δ〈r2〉98,99 and the nuclear moments are derived. These results are compared to nuclear spectroscopy information and are interpreted in the frame of the particle plus deformed core model.

Nuclear spins of76Rb and119Cs by? radiation detected optical pumping

1978

An optical pumping apparatus has been attached to the reconstructed ISOLDE on-line mass separator at CERN in order to obtain nuclear data of isotopes far fromβ stability. As first results the spins of76Rb (T 1/2=36.8 s) and119Cs (T 1/2=37.7 s) have been determined byβ radiation detected optical pumping (β-RADOP) to beI=1 andI=9/2 respectively.

Spins, moments and charge radii in the isotopic series181Hg-191Hg

1976

The hyperfine structure splitting and the isotope shift in the (6 s2 1S0 - 6s 6p3P1,λ=2,537 A) line of very neutron deficient Hg isotopes were determined by the β radiation detected optical pumping method (β-RADOP). In addition, nuclear magnetic resonance was observed in the atomic ground state. The results are Mean-square nuclear charge radii are calculated. Interpreting the sudden change of nuclear radius between187Hg and185Hg δ〈r2〉187,185=0.42(5)fm2 as oblate-prolate shape transition, one obtains δ〈β2〉 =0.054(5).

Interdisciplinary experiments with polarized 3He

1998

Abstract Optical pumping of metastable 3 He atoms is a very efficient method to produce large quantities of nuclear spin-polarized 3 He. Recent developments in mechanical compression of the gas, its storage and transport allow for its flexible use in different fields of physics and applied science. Among these are (1) scattering experiments of polarized beams from polarized 3 He-targets, (2) 3 He as neutron spin filter to polarize neutron beams at research reactors, and (3) polarized 3 He gas inhaled into the lungs to perform magnetic resonance imaging. The paper discusses the different topics along with results obtained in a first round of experiments.

Squeezed Light Generation via Spatial Symmetry Breaking

2009

The spontaneous spatial symmetry breaking occurring in the transverse section of the light beam emitted by a degenerate optical parametric oscillator is shown to give rise to perfectly squeezed light. Such phenomenon occurs at any operating conditions, unlike conventional squeezing.

Quadratic solitons in 2D nonlinear photonic crystals

2007

We report on the first observation of spatial solitons in a 2D nonlinear photonic crystal. The experiments were performed in an hexagonally poled LiNbO3 waveguide designed for second harmonic generation from ~1.55 micron.
