The potential of optimization in communal routing problems: case studies from Finland
2009
Abstract: In many European countries, municipalities offer their inhabitants a wide variety of social services. In this paper we will focus on efficiently scheduling home care, transportation of the elderly, and home meal delivery. These so-called municipal or communal routing problems can be modeled as different variants of the vehicle routing problem, a well-known optimization problem from the literature. We present a focused literature review and report on case studies using Finnish data. The computational results show that there is a significant potential for cost savings for all applications considered.
A multi-technique simultaneous approach for the design of a sailing yacht
2015
In this paper, most significant steps involved during the whole process of designing a sailing yacht are outlined. In particular, a novel simultaneous approach has been proposed to optimize the design process of a sailing yacht. Analytical resistance prediction models are simultaneously used with CAD systems and computational fluid dynamics tools to find, in the more effective way, the best solution for the chosen design conditions. As a general rule, in fact, once the target point has been decided, task of the designer is the definition of those systems of aerodynamic and hydrodynamic forces that are in equilibrium when the boat sails at its target. Unfortunately, a multi-purpose yacht doe…
AN OBJECT ORIENTED MODEL FOR SCHEDULING IN AGILE MANUFACTURING
2002
Agility represents a key factor in industry to handle the continuous market changes. Companies must re-organize their activities to be agile and competitive in such a dynamic environment. In particular, production planning and control tools are very important to optimize the manufacturing process responsiveness to sudden changes in customer demand. In this paper, an attempt has been made to develop an object-oriented software architecture that allows the optimal line organization to be determined once a set of parts to be produced has been ordered. An optimization module represented by a simulated annealing algorithm has been interfaced with an object oriented architecture to build up a fr…
Modelling and optimization of a passive structural control design for a spar-type floating wind turbine
2014
Abstract Compared with fixed-bottom installation, deep water floating wind turbine has to undergo more severe structural loads due to extra degrees of freedom. Aiming for effective load reduction, this paper deals with the evaluation of a passive structural control design for a spar-type floating wind turbine, and the proposed strategy is to install a tuned mass damper (TMD) into the spar platform. Firstly, a mathematical model for wind turbine surge-heave-pitch motion is established based on the D’Alembert’s principle of inertial forces. Then, parameter estimation is performed by comparing the outputs from the proposed model and the state-of-the-art simulator. Further, different optimizati…
A robust evolutionary algorithm for the recovery of rational Gielis curves
2013
International audience; Gielis curves (GC) can represent a wide range of shapes and patterns ranging from star shapes to symmetric and asymmetric polygons, and even self intersecting curves. Such patterns appear in natural objects or phenomena, such as flowers, crystals, pollen structures, animals, or even wave propagation. Gielis curves and surfaces are an extension of Lamé curves and surfaces (superquadrics) which have benefited in the last two decades of extensive researches to retrieve their parameters from various data types, such as range images, 2D and 3D point clouds, etc. Unfortunately, the most efficient techniques for superquadrics recovery, based on deterministic methods, cannot…
A hierarchical architecture for increasing efficiency of large photovoltaic plants under non-homogeneous solar irradiation
2019
Abstract Under non-homogeneous solar irradiation, photovoltaic (PV) panels receive different solar irradiance, resulting in a decrease in efficiency of the PV generation system. There are a few technical options to fix this issue that goes under the name of mismatch. One of these is the reconfiguration of the PV generation system, namely changing the connections of the PV panels from the initial configuration to the optimal one. Such technique has been widely considered for small systems, due to the excessive number of required switches. In this paper, the authors propose a new method for increasing the efficiency of large PV systems under non-homogeneous solar irradiation using Series-Para…
'SMART laser', Development of laser sources integrating an optimized functioning via a process of learning
2022
Ost commercially available mode-blocking lasers provide a unique pulse regime to the user, driven only by a simple switch. To solve certain problems, it would be advantageous to increase the possibilities of pulse adjustment in many areas of application, from micro-machining to wavelength conversion. One way to increase the degrees of freedom of a laser cavity is to incorporate into it a saturable absorbant with adjustable parameters, as with non-linear polarization evolution devices (NPEs). The absence of an analytical relationship between the adjustable cavity parameters and the characteristics of a generated pulse can be circumvented by the use of scalable algorithms, well suited to mult…
Analytical Approach Determining the Optimal Length of Paired Drip Laterals in Uniformly Sloped Fields
2015
Microirrigation plants, if properly designed, allow for water use efficiency to be optimized and high values of emission uniformity to be obtained in the field. Disposing paired laterals, for which two distribution pipes extend in opposite directions from a common manifold, can contribute to reducing the initial investment cost that represents a limiting factor for small-scale farmers of developing countries where in the last decade, the diffusion of such irrigation systems has been increasing. The objective of this paper is to propose an analytical approach to evaluate the maximum lengths of paired drip laterals for any uniform ground slope, respecting the criteria to maintain emitter flow…
A Workflow for the Performance Based Design of Naturally Ventilated Tall Buildings Using a Genetic Algorithm (GA)
2019
Optimization of Natural Ventilation process in highrise buildings is one of the most complex and least addressed phenomenon in the field of sustainable architecture. This issue requires urgent consideration to reduce the computation time due to fast growing demand of vertical construction in metropolitan cities. Until recently most highrise buildings have been operated with mechanical systems, causing high energy loads in hot climates and have high carbon footprints. Highrise buildings with natural ventilation and sky gardens can address these problems. This study involves the development of a Genetic Algorithm (GA) addressing the multi objective optimization of natural ventilation in tall …
Improved Performance in Quadrotor Trajectory Tracking Using MIMO PIλ-D Control
2022
This paper aims to develop a fractional control approach for quadrotor trajectory tracking. A fractional-order integrator (PIλ) with a feedback derivative scheme is designed to control each state of the MIMO system. The designed feedback controller stabilizes the initially unstable decoupled states and widens the stability, while PIλ provides precise trajectory tracking capabilities. After a successful simulation study, the new PIλ-D controller is implemented in the hardware environment. The various performance and load disturbance analyses reveal the effectiveness of the proposed scheme compared with the classical PD/PID controllers. The real-time study also shows that this scheme is a sim…
