Photochemical behavior in azobenzene having acidic groups. Preparation of magnetic photoresponsive gels

2011

[EN] The photochemistry of three azobenzenes representing contrasting photochemical behaviors is described in the present work. Thus, Methyl Orange (MO, 4-[[(4-dimethylamino)phenyl]-azo]benzenesulfonic acid sodium salt, hereinafter (1) and 4-hydroxyazobenzene-4'-sulfonic acid (2) undergo in water fast photochemical proton shift, with decays in the microsecond timescale. In contrast to the previous cases, azobenzene-4,4'-dicarboxylic acid (3) undergoes photoisomerization in water. This photochemical behavior allows the preparation of aqueous gels with Aerosil as gelating agent (5% weight) exhibiting high cyclability and photoreversible isomerization of the trans to cis (300 nm irradiation) a…

Enhanced optical properties of Cd–Mg-co-doped ZnO nanoparticles induced by low crystal structure distortion

2020

Abstract The growth of CdxMg0.125-xZn0.875O nanoparticles with yellow-orange luminescence is achieved up to 2.5 at. % Cd via a modified sol–gel process. X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed that all the nanoparticles have the hexagonal wurtzite structure. It is found that Cd doping has a considerable effect on the crystal size, microstrain, band gap, and photoluminescence of the Mg0·125Zn0·875O structure, originating from a preferred crystallographic orientation along the (101) plane of the wurtzite structure. The shift and broadening of the E2(high) mode observed in the Raman spectra due to growth-induced strain corroborates the small distortion observed in the X-ray diffraction data. The …

Photocatalysis of rhodamine B and methyl orange degradation under solar light on ZnO and Cu2O thin films

2020

We report the photocatalytic properties of ZnO and Cu2O thin films deposited on glass substrates at room temperature by DC sputtering and pulsed laser deposition. The photoactivity of the films was investigated through the degradation of rhodamine B (RhB) and methyl orange (MO) under solar light. In order to select the most suitable film of ZnO for the of RhB and MO degradation, the relationship between the characteristics (e.g. energy levels and defects concentration) of ZnO films and their effectiveness in the photocatalytic yield of RhB and MO been studied, where several films were deposited by using different oxygen partial pressures (PO2: 0.05–1.3 mbar), while Cu2O films were grown und…

Optical and structural properties of Al 2 O 3 doped ZnO nanotubes prepared by ALD and their photocatalytic application

2018

Abstract Al2O3 doped ZnO nanotubes with controlled ratio of Al2O3 were successfully designed by combining the two techniques of atomic layer deposition (ALD) and electrospinnig. In order to study the effect of Al2O3 doping on optical and structural properties of Al2O3 doped ZnO nanotubes, the prepared samples were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR), reflectance emission and room temperature photoluminescence (PL). The photocatalytic activity and stability of these materials under UV light was studied by the photodegradation of methyl orange (MO). The results indicate that Al2O…

Synthesis of novel ZnO/ZnAl2O4 multi co-centric nanotubes and their long-term stability in photocatalytic application

2016

Based on the Kirkendall effect, novel double, triple and quadruple co-centric nanotubes of ZnO/ZnAl2O4 have been successfully fabricated by combining the two techniques of electrospinning and atomic layer deposition. The as-prepared samples were annealed at 900 °C under air. Their morphological, structural and optical properties were studied by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Energy-Dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), UV-visible spectrophotometry, Raman spectroscopy, photoluminescence (PL) and reflectance emission. The performances and long-term stability of these multi co-centric nanotubes for photocatalytic applications…

Au-ZnO Nanocomposite Films for Plasmonic Photocatalysis

2015

Nanocomposites based on plasmonic nanoparticles and metal-oxide semiconductors are emerging as promising materials for conversion of solar energy into chemical energy. In this work, a Au–ZnO nanocomposite film with notably enhanced photocatalytic activity is successfully prepared by a single-step process. Both ZnO and Au nanoparticles are synthesized in situ during baking of the film spin-coated from a solution of Zn(CH3COO)2 and HAuCl4. Furthermore, it is shown that this precursor solution can be formulated as a nanoink for the generation of micropatterns by microplotter printing, opening the way for the miniaturization of devices with enhanced properties for photocatalysis, optoelectronic…

Effect of air pressure on the electro-generation of H2O2 and the abatement of organic pollutants in water by electro-Fenton process

2015

Abstract The electro-generation of H 2 O 2 and the abatement of the model organic pollutant Acid Orange 7 (AO7) in water by an electro-Fenton process were performed under moderate air pressures (up to 11 bar) for the first time to our knowledge. An increase of the pressure gave rise to a drastic enhancement of the concentration of hydrogen peroxide. In systems pressurized with air at 11 bar, the electro reduction of oxygen at a graphite cathode gave rise to a concentration of H 2 O 2 of about 12 mM, about one order of magnitude higher than that achieved at atmospheric pressure. This result is attributed to the mass transfer intensification induced by the higher local concentration of molecu…

Electro-generation of H2O2 and abatement of organic pollutant in water by an electro-Fenton process in a microfluidic reactor

2013

The electro-generation of H2O2 and the abatement of the model organic pollutant Acid Orange 7 (AO7) in water by an electro-Fenton process were performed both in a conventional undivided macro cell and, for the first time, in a microfluidic reactor. Under optimized operative conditions, the reduction of oxygen in the microdevice gave rise, using graphite cathode, to a concentration of H2O2 of about 6 mM, one order of magnitude higher than that achieved in conventional cells. Similarly, when electro-Fenton was performed in the microfluidic reactor a dramatic increase of the abatement of COD was achieved with respect to that obtained in a conventional cell. Keywords: Wastewater treatments, Mic…

Effect of air pressure on the electro-Fenton process at carbon felt electrodes

2018

Abstract The effect of air pressure on electro-Fenton (PrEF process) was evaluated using two organic substances (maleic acid and Acid Orange 7) as model organic pollutants. First experiments were performed using a conventional carbon felt (CF) cathode. At room pressure, a slow removal of maleic acid was obtained, together with the generation of formic acid. Conversely, using pressurized air, the removal of maleic acid was dramatically accelerated and the formation of formic acid was not detected. The utilization of a carbon felt modified by the deposition of carbon black + PTFE mixture (MCF) and of pressurized air allowed to achieve even faster and almost total (>95%) removal of total organ…

Methane production from orange peel pressing liquid: A kinetic study

1992

Abstract This paper studies the anaerobic fermentation of orange peel pressing liquid (OPPL), in semi‐continuous digesters under thermophilic conditions (50, 55 and 60°C), using rabbit manure as inoculum which has been previously conditioned to substrate and temperature. Experimental data have been fitted, at each temperature, to the Chen and Hashimoto model. Kinetic parameters governing the process have been obtained. It can be observed that both μm and K decrease when temperature increases, within the studied range, whereas the calculated minimum hydraulic retention time, θm, increases with temperature, as tested experimentally.
