Recent advances in upscalable wet methods and ink formulations for printed electronics

2014

This review deals with the use of solution processing approaches for organic electronics with a focus on material ink formulations as well as on their applicability. The solution processing techniques include methods like gravure printing, screen printing and ink-jet printing. Basic principles of each approach are understood and fundamental correlations between material (metals, semiconductors, and dielectrics) ink properties and final device performances can be drawn. Nevertheless, solution processing methods have the potential to evolve as the most promising tools in organic device fabrication techniques and have already been applied successfully in the fields of organic thin film transis…

Tuning the electronic properties and the planarity degree in the π-extended TTF series: the prominent role of heteroatoms

2018

The main asset of small molecules for application in organic electronics lies in the tunability of their electronic properties owing to the precise control of their molecular design. Semiconducting properties in organic compounds are for instance closely linked to the molecular planarity degree, including when considering various redox states. Among those species, the π-extended TTF (exTTF: 9,10-bis(1,3-dithiol-2-ylidene)-9,10-dihydroanthracene) presents fascinating redox and structural properties, which have been extensively studied in various fields of organic electronics. Here we show that S-exTTF, a sulfur enriched π-isoelectronic dithieno analogue of pristine exTTF, synthesized through…

Improving the Robustness of Organic Semiconductors through Hydrogen Bonding

2021

Molecular organization plays an essential role in organic semiconductors since it determines the extent of intermolecular interactions that govern the charge transport present in all electronic applications. The benefits of hydrogen bond-directed self-assembly on charge transport properties are demonstrated by comparing two analogous pyrrole-based, fused heptacyclic molecules. The rationally designed synthesis of these materials allows for inducing or preventing hydrogen bonding. Strategically located hydrogen bond donor and acceptor sites control the solid-state arrangement, favoring the supramolecular expansion of the π-conjugated surface and the subsequent π-stacking as proved by X-ray d…

Nanoimprint lithography for organic electronics

2002

Thin films made of organic semiconductors (α-sexithiophene, PDAS and PBAS) have been printed and the impact on morphology studied by optical, atomic force and electron microscopy. Surfaces in contact with the stamp during printing undergo a change towards smoother and more ordered material at the macromolecular scale. Interdigitated nanoelectrodes to be used as source and drain in TFTs have been made and printed down to 100 nm. PDAS and PBAS can be printed at room temperature and preserve their printed feature provided they are cross-linked afterwards.

Organic Thin-Film Transistors with Enhanced Sensing Capabilities

2009

Organic thin-film transistors, used as sensing devices, have been attracting quite a considerable interest lately as they offer advantages such as multi parameter behaviour and possibility to be quite easily molecularly tuned for the detection of specific analytes. Here, a study on the dependences of the devices responses on important parameters such as the active layer thickness and its morphology as well as on the transistor channel length is presented. To introduce the least number of variables the system chosen for this study is quite a simple and well assessed one being based on a thiophene oligomer active layer exposed to 1-butanol vapours.

Excitation Energy Transfer in Organic Materials: From Fundamentals to Optoelectronic Devices

2009

In this review, we discuss investigations of electronic excitation energy transfer in conjugated organic materials at the bulk and single molecule level and applications of energy transfer in fluorescent and phosphorescent organic light emitting devices. A brief overview of common descriptions of energy transfer mechanisms is given followed by a discussion of some basic photophysics of conjugated materials including the generation of excited states and their subsequent decay through various channels. In particular, various examples of bimolecular excited state annihilation processes are presented. Energy transfer studies at the single molecule level provide a new tool to study electronic co…

Orthogonal Ambipolar Semiconductor Nanostructures for Complementary Logic Gates.

2016

We report orthogonal ambipolar semiconductors that exhibit hole and electron transport in perpendicular directions based on aligned films of nanocrystalline "shish-kebabs" containing poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) and N,N'-di-n-octyl-3,4,9,10-perylenetetracarboxylic diimide (PDI) as p- and n-type components, respectively. Polarized optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction measurements reveal a high degree of in-plane alignment. Relying on the orientation of interdigitated electrodes to enable efficient charge transport from either the respective p- or n-channel materials, we demonstrate semiconductor films with high anisotropy in the sign of charge carriers. Fi…

Determination of charge carrier mobility of hole transporting polytriarylamine-based diodes

2010

Hole transport properties of three different side chain poly(triarylamines) have been determined by means of the analysis of steady-state current-voltage characteristics using co-planar diode structures. The interpretation is based on space-charge limited models with field-dependent mobility. Mobilities between ~ 10- 8 and 10- 6 cm2 V- 1 s- 1 are obtained. The highest mobility is achieved for poly(tetraphenylbenzidine) devices and the lowest for poly(triphenylamine) devices. Electron-rich methoxy substituents increase the mobility of poly(triphenylamine)s. A comparison of the mobility values with those obtained using organic field-effect transistors is also given. © 2009 Elsevier B.V. All r…

Synthesis of silacyclopent-2-en-4-ols via intramolecular [2 + 2] photocycloaddition of benzoyl(allyl)silanes

2019

Organosilicon compounds are versatile units with a wide range of uses from medicinal chemistry to the field of organic electronics. An unprecedented method for the synthesis of novel diaryl-substituted silacyclopentenols via blue-light promoted intramolecular [2 + 2] photocycloaddition of acyl silanes is herein disclosed. Additionally, the present findings demonstrate the influence of the olefin substituents in controlling the regioselectivity of the intramolecular Paterno–Buchi reaction, providing silacycles different from previously reported ones. The high degree of functionalization of these compounds makes them attractive precursors to other synthetically challenging silacyclopentanes.
