ChemInform Abstract: Hybrid Materials Based on Magnetic Layered Double Hydroxides: A Molecular Perspective

2015

ConspectusDesign of functional hybrids lies at the very core of synthetic chemistry as it has enabled the development of an unlimited number of solids displaying unprecedented or even improved properties built upon the association at the molecular level of quite disparate components by chemical design. Multifunctional hybrids are a particularly appealing case among hybrid organic/inorganic materials. Here, chemical knowledge is used to deploy molecular components bearing different functionalities within a single solid so that these properties can coexist or event interact leading to unprecedented phenomena. From a molecular perspective, this can be done either by controlled assembly of orga…

Organic Thin-Film Transistors with Enhanced Sensing Capabilities

2009

Organic thin-film transistors, used as sensing devices, have been attracting quite a considerable interest lately as they offer advantages such as multi parameter behaviour and possibility to be quite easily molecularly tuned for the detection of specific analytes. Here, a study on the dependences of the devices responses on important parameters such as the active layer thickness and its morphology as well as on the transistor channel length is presented. To introduce the least number of variables the system chosen for this study is quite a simple and well assessed one being based on a thiophene oligomer active layer exposed to 1-butanol vapours.

Organic materials in the wall paintings in Pompei: a case study of Insuladel Centenario

2012

Abstract Background The present research concerns the Roman wall paintings preserved at Insula del Centenario (IX, 8), the important Pompeian block situated in the Regio IX, along Via di Nola. Results The aims of this research are two: to verify the presence of lipidic and proteinaceous material to spread the pigments, and to identify organic matter in painting materials owing to previous restoration works. The samples collected from the wall paintings of different rooms have been investigated by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), and Gas Chromatography/ Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS). Conclusions The analytical results show that these Roman wall paintings were realized without the…

Monitoring of chicken meat freshness by means of a colorimetric sensor array

2012

A new optoelectronic nose to monitor chicken meat ageing has been developed. It is based on 16 pigments prepared by the incorporation of different dyes (pH indicators, Lewis acids, hydrogenbonding derivatives, selective probes and natural dyes) into inorganic materials (UVM-7, silica and alumina). The colour changes of the sensor array were characteristic of chicken ageing in a modi¿ed packaging atmosphere (30% CO2¿70% N2). The chromogenic array data were processed with qualitative (PCA) and quantitative (PLS) tools. The PCA statistical analysis showed a high degree of dispersion, with nine dimensions required to explain 95% of variance. Despite this high dimensionality, a tridimensional re…

X-ray powder diffraction of mineral pigments and medicines from the 17th century pharmacy (Spezieria) Santa Maria della Scala in Rome, Italy

2018

The pharmacy (spezieria) Santa Maria della Scala was founded in Rome by the Discalced Carmelites Order in the 17th century, and during the 18th and 19th centuries it became the official supplier of medicines for Vatican Popes. The laboratory and the cases of this spezieria still preserve glass jars with organic and inorganic materials, which were presumably used for medicine and artistic material preparation, whose composition is unknown to date. A research project was initiated with the aim to study the stored materials and the role that the pharmacy played in regional, national and international contexts. In this manuscript, the compounds were analysed through X-ray powder diffraction wit…

Organic waste materials for Bioengineering works

2016

Bioengineering uses plant and biodegradable materials of natural origin, stones, steel, additives and synthetic products in various combinations and as support for the growth of plants. The lack of available resources and progressive increasing of desertification in Sicily, led to the search for alternative materials. Objective of the work is testing organic waste materials for the realization of bioengineering works in the several areas of application: terrestrial, fluvial and coastline. To this aim, is proposed the use of innovative techniques that involve the construction of low-cost brushwood, environmentally friendly materials made: the pruning of vines and the oceanic Posidonia oceani…
