Rethinking Vygotskian Cultural-Historical Theory in Light of Pepperian Root Metaphor Theory : Dynamic Interplay of the Organicism and Contextualism
2016
This article examines Vygotskian cultural-historical theory by putting it into dialogue with Stephen Pepper's root metaphor theory. I focus on Vygotsky's insistence on the dialectical unity of the phylogenetic and ontogenetic domains in ontogenesis, which he articulated in his account of how the natural-psychological and cultural-psychological lines of development merge with the emergence of speeching in ontogenesis. I compare Vygotsky's two genetic domains and Pepper's world hypotheses of organicism and contextualism. I argue that Vygotsky transcended what is often thought of as a fundamental dichotomy between organicism and contextualism. In accomplishing this effective reconciliation, Vy…
VILLA “LA QUERCIA” A GIBILMANNA, DI GIUSEPPE SAMONÀ
2012
2020
This paper deals with the complex relationship between the observation of nature and the development of digital- design processes. This relationship reveals itself aporetic particularly if the concept of mimesis has been clarified. This contribution focuses on some projects that may be ascribed in digital organicism. Challenged by the observation of “The Elephant house” by Markus Schietsch Architekten in Zurich, the paper refers to some fundamental texts that show how an explicit and structured theory may help to avoid a new sublimation of the technique through miming natural forms.
La linguistica ottocentesca fra speculazione, storia e tipologia
2020
In the 19th century of the past millennium not only did linguistics become a historical science, it also began to lay the foundations of the theoretical and synchronic investigation that in the later century would gain a pre-eminent position amongst researchers. The directions of research that linguists took in that century are therefore so many and varied that it is definitely difficult to give a detailed account of them in a single paper. Neither is it easy to find and follow a connecting thread that allows coherent, exhaustive treatment of the matter. Things standing as they are, the author starts arbitrarily from the first of the nine lessons that F.M. Müller gave on the science of lang…
Developing a metatheoretical framework for second language development : a cultural-historical theory and dynamic systems theory perspective
2017
The main aim of this article-based dissertation is to construct and articulate a dialectical metatheoretical architecture for the study of second language development termed Purposive-Historical Systems Theory (PHiST) invoking, inter alia, the axiomatic imperatives of dynamic systems theory (DST), Vygotskian cultural-historical theory (CHT), and Pepperian root metaphor theory (RMT). Specifically, it primarily purports, first, to demonstrate the tenability of a dialectical synthesis of DST and CHT; second, to philosophize on the fundamental contours of PHiST; third, to apply a novel metatheoretical perspective, as a quintessential example, to reconceptualizing the seminal construct of the Zo…

Toward the incalculable :a note on Henry James and organic form
2014
In "The Art of Fiction" Henry James writes: "A novel is a living thing, all one and continuous, like any other organism, and in proportion as it lives will it be found, I think, that in each of the parts there is something of each of the other parts" (EL 54). Written in 1884, the essay addressed Walter Besant, a Victorian critic and novelist who promoted the idea of the novel with a moral purpose. It is quite possible that contemporary readers, preoccupied with James's refutation of the Victorian argu- ment about the didactic imperatives of art, overlooked this sentence. Today, with our knowledge of the writer's notebooks and in the context of the celebrated prefaces he added to the volumes…
