Development without rights? : an analysis of the Chinese development policies in Tibet in a power and post-development perspective

2013

Master thesis in development management – University of Agder 2013 While economic growth keeps reaching new highs in People’s Republic of China (PRC), the inequalities and human rights violations are increasing with a matching speed. Minority areas continue to be characterized by extreme poverty and social unrest, and despite heavy growth rates since the 1990’s, the Tibetan Autonomous Region remains worst off. At the same time the PRC has never invested more resources in development projects in the Tibetan Plateau. Whereas the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) keeps building more high ways, railways and ‘modern housing’ in the name of ‘human development’ in Tibet, more than one hundred individu…

Assessing the health implications of improved water supply in rural Ghana : the case of Atwima Mponua district in the Ashanti region of Ghana

2013

Master thesis in development management – University of Agder 2013 Improved water supply in rural Ghana gives substantial health benefits. Water is an essential ingredient in all facets of human and economic development. Water has a direct impact on human health and any deterioration in quality affects human wellbeing. Lack of access to safe water is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality globally. Nevertheless, a considerable number of people around the world lack access to safe drinking water. Inevitably the burden of poor access to safe water falls primarily on the poorest of the poor. Until recently, little attention was paid to rural water supply in Ghana. Rural communities tradi…

Oiling the Wheels of Conflict? Local Grievances, Relative Deprivation and the Potential for Conflict in Cape Three Points, Ghana.

2015

Master thesis development management- University of Agder, 2015 Natural resource, particularly oil, has been predicted to be a core factor of internal conflicts in the post-cold war era (Le Billon, 2001; Klare, 2001). This thesis explores the potential for conflict in new and emerging petro-states where recent oil discoveries have raised concerns about the risk of oil conflict occurring. The relative deprivation theory (Gurr, 1970) serves as the main theoretical point of discussion for this study. Using a case study of Cape Three Points in Ghana, the study empirically examines how community level grievances, in terms of challenges and expectations connected with the discovery and production…

How cooperation between international NGOs and local youth associations influence civil society in Malawi : a case study of Plan Malawi's partnership…

2013

Master thesis in development management - University of Agder 2013 There is a significant focus within development aid on the importance of civil society for democracy and development, and resources are channelled towards INGOs with the aim of them contributing to “strengthening” local civil society. The literature is however critical and inconclusive when it comes to the impact of such efforts (Riddell, 2007), and there is debate as to whether the idea of “civil society” is relevant in a developing country context (Whaites, 2000). Further, there is a lack of research on the role of youth within development and civil society, despite the fact that the global numbers of youth have reached it…

The voices of the invisible girls : reintegration of former female child soldiers in Burundi

2013

Master thesis in development management - University of Agder 2013 Child soldiers are used in armed groups and forces around the word. Children as young as seven years of age have been reported to actively participate in armed conflict. The phenomenon of child soldiering has become increasingly recognized in recent decades. Females constitute between ten per cent to one third of the fighting forces worldwide. Despite this, girls and women have until recently been highly invisible in both research and intervention programs. Former female child soldiers often experience social exclusion through rejection, marginalization and stigmatization when returning to civilian life, often due to the tra…

2016

Master thesis development management - University of Agder 2016 During the last two decades of the twentieth century, there emerged an increased interest within the development field in how to promote sustainable local development. By responding to the danger of inducing aid dependency, it can be argued that the understanding of sustainable local development should involve enhancement of local communities’ abilities to successfully manage their own affairs as a way out of poverty. Such empowerment has been referred to as strengthening of capacities and freedom. This has been argued to lead to transformation and longlasting improvement of people’s lives, enhancing their well-being by breakin…

Small streams make big rivers : exploring motivation and idealism in Norwegian personalised aid initiatives in the Gambia

2016

Master thesis development management - University of Agder 2016 Little is known about personalised aid organisations in Norway, and those initiatives are not recognised as part of the official Norwegian development aid structure. The organisations are small in size and by themselves do not raise enormous amounts of money, nor do they individually have a massive developmental effect. But collectively it is believed that their influence, both on sponsors in Norway as well as on aid recipients in the Global South, is quite substantial. This study explores the motivation of initiators of six personalised aid organisation in Norway, which all run development projects in the Gambia. The character…

The wheel of collaboration tools

2006

Paper from the 2006 20th anniversary conference on Computer supported cooperative work We present a holistic framework for analyzing and specifying collaboration solutions, developed by an oil and gas company in response to practical needs in supporting integrated collaboration and information management. A typology of collaboration tool capabilities, termed the Wheel of Collaboration Tools (WCT), is described. We assess its contributions, and discuss areas of application and potential further development. Our intent is to stimulate discussion and research related to this type of collaboration modeling.
