Can the odours modulate salivation? Impact of the nature of the odorant

2015

Introduction :Saliva plays numerous roles in the oral cavity, especially in digestion and taste perception. It is well admitted that tastants are effective stimuli of salivation and that the salivary response (flow and composition) depends on the nature of the tastant. However, the impact of odours on salivation is poorly known and not consensual. Odours are the first chemical signal informing about food palatability before ingestion. In this context, it is necessary to understand if the salivary secretions are modulated in function of this sensory signal. The aim of this study is to compare the salivary flow response after stimulation by different odours having different hedonic values.Mat…

Effects of a School-Based Intervention on Motivation for Out-of-School Physical Activity Participation

2021

Purpose: We tested the effects of an autonomy-supportive intervention in physical education (PE) on high-school students’ autonomous motivation in PE, and their autonomous motivation, intentions, and physical activity (PA) behavior in a leisure time guided by the trans-contextual model. Method: PE classes in two schools were assigned to receive either an autonomy-supportive intervention and/or a control intervention via random allocation by the school. The PE teacher of the school assigned to the autonomy-supportive intervention was trained to provide autonomy support while the PE teacher of the school assigned to the control intervention received no training. Students (N = 256) in all clas…

Supplementary material - Details on study area, species, methods and additional results from Ocean acidification affects somatic and otolith growth r…

2019

Ocean acidification (OA) may have varied effects on fish eco-physiological responses. Most OA studies were carried out in laboratory conditions without considering the in situ pCO2/pH variability documented for many marine coastal ecosystems. Using a standard otolith ageing technique, we assessed how in situ ocean acidification (ambient, versus end-of-century CO2 levels) can affect can affect somatic and otolith growth, and their relationship in a coastal fish. Somatic and otolith growth rates of juveniles from a population of the ocellated wrasse Symphodus ocellatus living off a Mediterranean CO2 seep, increased at the high-pCO2 site. Also, we detected that slower growing individuals livin…

Combined treatment of hidradenitis suppurativa with intense pulsed light (IPL) and radiofrequency (RF)

2019

Background: Hidradenitis suppurativa is a chronic inflammatory disease with high burden. Treatment options are often unsatisfactory. We assessed the effect of a combination therapy of intense pulsed light (IPL) and radiofrequency (RF). Methods: The explorative study included 47 patients and was performed as a prospective, monocentric, randomized, three-arm parallel-group design trial with a prior 12 weeks observation period. Treatment arms were IPL and RF monotherapies or IPL + RF combination therapy. After 12 weeks, all patients received IPL + RF for additional 12 weeks (cross-over). Primary endpoint was the change in active lesion numbers, secondary endpoint the change in Dermatology Qual…

Multisectorial changes in the ciliary muscle during accommodation measured with high-resolution optical coherence tomography

2019

ABSTRACT Purpose: To measure changes in the anterior ciliary muscle during accommodation at the nasal, superior, temporal, and inferior sectors by means of an anterior chamber optical coherence tomographer, and correlate them with vergence changes. Methods: Twenty-four subjects with healthy, phakic eyes, whose mean age was 27.1 ± 8.9 years, underwent measurement with an anterior chamber optical coherence tomographer. The anterior ciliary muscle was measured at the nasal, temporal, superior, and inferior sectors for 0, -1, -2, and -3 D of vergence. A linear model was used to assess the correlation of each eye parameter with the accommodative demand. Results: The anterior ciliary muscle area …

Half a century of multiple anthropogenic stressors has altered northern forest understory plant communities

2018

The boreal forests constitute the largest forest biome in the northern hemisphere. These forests are under increasing anthropogenic impact from intensified forest management, eutrophication and climate change, which may change their ecosystem functions and the services they provide. Swedish forests cover a long climatic gradient, receive highly variable rates of nitrogen deposition, and have a long history of forest use. Extensive systematic long-term data on vegetation from the National Forest Inventories (NFI) make Sweden an ideal area to study how species composition and function of other, more pristine boreal forests, might change under increased anthropogenic impact. We used NFI-data t…
