The central control of oriented locomotion in insects - towards a neurobiological model

A neurobiological model for the higher control of oriented locomotion in insects is developed here. It is based on studies in a genetic model insect, the fruit fly Drosophila melangaster. Reference is made to other insects, where respective functions are not yet studied in Drosophila. Flies can walk swiftly with up to 16 steps per second, each leg, on almost any substrate and in any orientation to the gravity vector. Successive growth stages of P1-elements in the Middle to early Late Triassic species Pseudofurnishius murcianus allows the observation of a detailed ontogeny. Besides the gradual enlargement of its curved blade and the growing number of its denticles, a small internal platform develops, eventually followed by an external one, both bearing denticles. The number of denticles on the blade and internal platform increases from five and one in the smallest specimens, respectively, to 14 and 9 in fully developed ones, whereby the distribution pattern of platform-denticles, on the inner one in particular, is of great morphological variety. Regional and age-dependent differences in the effect of wind on the migratory routes of Eleonora's Falcon.

During migration, birds can show different responses to wind in relation to distance to the goal, experience, ecological barriers and visibility of landmarks. We analysed the effect of wind (tailwinds and crosswinds) on daily movement rates (forward and perpendicular) of Eleonora’s falcons using ARGOS satellite telemetry, during their trans-continental autumn migration to Madagascar, in relation to the different crossed regions and individuals’ age class. Detection and orientation evaluation for three-dimensional objects

This paper presents a novel method for detection and orientation evaluation for three-dimensional (3-D) objects based on range images. It is based on the calculation of the phase Fourier transform of the 3-D object range image. The method permits the estimation of the angular position of the object. It works with rotations around an axis perpendicular to the line of sight, although it exhibits a certain nodding tolerance. Simulated results demonstrate the ability of the new introduced method.
Development of antitaxial fringes during non-coaxial deformation: an experimental study

Strain fringes were modelled experimentally around wooden objects in a simple-shear box containing Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). The fringes were made of paraffin wax that was periodically poured into dilated sites next to the core-object and left to crystallise. In the experiments fringes and core-object rotated at similar decreasing rotation rates relative to extensional incremental stretching axes (ISA) of flow and rotated relative to each other by small amounts. International audience; This paper addresses the view planning problem for the digitization of 3D objects without prior knowledge on their shape and presents a novel surface approach for the Next Best View (NBV) computation. The proposed method uses the concept of Mass Vector Chains (MVC) to define the global orientation of the scanned part. All of the viewpoints satisfying an orientation constraint are clustered using the Mean Shift technique to construct a first set of candidates for the NBV.
