Molecular characterization of cucumber mosaic virus isolates infecting ornamental species cultivated in the botanical garden of Bologna university.
2006
During an epidemiological survey carried out in the Botanical Garden at Bologna University, Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) has been detected by applying PAS-ELISA technique infecting some ornamental species exhibiting a severe symptomatology on the leaves. Datura innoxia Miller. showed mosaic and leaf-curling; Globularia nudicaulis L. produced narrowed leaves with a yellow mosaic and/or variegation; Eupatorium cannabinum L. showed a systemic chlorotic and/or yellow mosaic and stunting. Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and single strand conformation polymorphism (SSCP) were employed to characterise these CMV isolates. Total RNA was extracted from symptomatic leaf samples…
Characterization of a Cucumber mosaic virus isolate infecting Mandevilla sanderi (Hemsl.) Woodson
2005
In 2004, virus-like symptoms consisting of yellow rings in older leaves were observed in the foliage of Mandevilla sanderi grown from shoots in the province of Catania (Sicily, Italy). The plants were tested for virus presence using DAS-ELISA, mechanical inoculations to the host, RT-PCR and SSCP. Serological tests detected Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) in all symptomatic leaf samples. The virus was mechanically transmitted to 11 of the 15 host species tested, including some of the Chenopodiaceae and Solanaceae families; indicator plants showed symptoms typical of CMV subgroup I. RT-PCR, SSCP and cloning were employed to characterize this CMV isolate, and to make clear its genetic relationship…
THE MEDITERRANEAN AS SOURCE OF ORNAMENTALS
2013
Cultivation of plants for ornamental purposes throughout the Mediterranean dates back to deep antiquity. In fact Egyptian, Greek, Roman and other previous myths are pervaded with correlations among humans, gods and plants either useful or ornamental – whose names such as hyacinth, narcissus, and many others that are still common. In that period almost all of the ornamental flora was native to the Mediterranean and next countries, having been the flow from other territories irrelevant up to the Renaissance. From XVI century on, the whole Mediterranean ornamental heritage was gradually spread throughout the new discovered territories, and from there a huge number of plants was introduced to M…
Predictors of enhancing human physical attractiveness: Data from 93 countries
2022
People across the world and throughout history have gone to great lengths to enhance their physical appearance. Evolutionary psychologists and ethologists have largely attempted to explain this phenomenon via mating preferences and strategies. Here, we test one of the most popular evolutionary hypotheses for beauty-enhancing behaviors, drawn from mating market and parasite stress perspectives, in a large cross-cultural sample. We also test hypotheses drawn from other influential and non-mutually exclusive theoretical frameworks, from biosocial role theory to a cultural media perspective. Survey data from 93,158 human participants across 93 countries provide evidence that behaviors such as a…
Position-dependent reproductive success of flowers in Dactylorhiza maculata (Orchidaceae)
2000
1. This study explores the importance of flower position for reproductive success of individual flowers of the deceptive terrestrial orchid, Dactylorhiza maculata (L.) Soo. 2. Upper flowers had smaller lips and produced lighter pollinia than those in other parts of the inflorescence, probably due to architectural effects. 3. Dry weight of seed capsules decreased from bottom to top in the inflorescence in both open-pollinated and hand-pollinated plants. However, removal of flowers from the middle and lowest parts of the inflorescence considerably increased seed production of the upper flowers. Decreased seed set was due to decreased resource availability because of the long maintenance time …
Els esgrafiats de la Cartoixa de Valldecrist. Una proposta de reconstrucció
2010
The recreational value of botanic garden events: A case study of the Zagara plant fair in Palermo, Italy
2022
Botanic gardens are defined by their mission to maintain living plant collections for scientific research, conservation, display and education. This mission represents the potential ecosystem services that botanic gardens aim to produce, with display and education specifically regarding recreational ecosystem services (RES). Visitors must directly experience botanic gardens to transform these potential RES into real benefits, yet the public may not be interested in studying plants during their leisure time. Thus, botanic gardens turn to events to attract visitors. The objective of this study is to estimate the RES benefits created by a botanic garden event and profile the visitors that it b…
Applications of the X-ray fluorescence analysis to the cultural patrimony of the Comunidad Valenciana (Spain): Painting, metal and paper
1999
We present examples of the application of the X-ray fluorescence (XRF) to the study of the artistic and cultural patrimony of the Comunidad Valenciana in the following areas: a) Valencian paintings of the XV and XVI centuries; b) silver ornaments coming from Iberian towns (s. III b.C.); c) ink and paper samples in manuscripts and engravings of the XVII and XIX centuries. The non destructive analyses are carried out “in situ” using a XRF system that consists of a tube of X-rays of 50 kV and 1 mA, and a detector of Si(Li) with an energy resolution 140 eV (FWHM at 5.9 keV).
Unos paneles de la Real Fábrica de Azulejos de Valencia en la capilla de Vicente Gascó de la Catedral de Teruel
1992
EL ACTUAL BAPTISTERIO DE LA CATEDRAL DE TERUEL FUE EN SU ORIGEN UNA CAPILLA DEDICADA A LA VIRGEN DE LOS DESAMPARADOS. PROYECTADA POR VICENTE GASCO, DIRECTOR DE LA REAL ACADEMIA DE SAN CARLOS DE VALENCIA, COMENZO A CONSTRUIRSE EN 1795 Y SE INAUGURO DOS AÑOS MAS TARDE. ESTA CAPILLA DE PLANTA OVAL Y REDUCIDAS DIMENSIONES, APARECE CHAPADA CON UN PANEL DE AZULEJOS QUE NO FORMARIAN PARTE DEL PROYECTO ORIGINAL DE GASCO. NO OBSTANTE, LOS CUADROS CERAMICOS CON EL POZO Y LA FUENTE SON CASI COETANEOS A LA CONSTRUCCION Y ESTAN RELACIONADOS CON LAS REALES FABRICAS DE AZULEJOS DE VALENCIA. OTROS AZULEJOS TOSCOS PARECEN DE ORIGEN TUROLENSE Y LOS PANELES CON EL ARCA SE RELACIONAN CON LO QUE SE HACIA EN LA …
